A VISION OF K-12
STUDENTS TODAY
The film is straight forward and easy to
understand. The voice over combined
with the images in the film, the writing
and the ideas that they put forward
make you think the whole way through
the film and really understand what the
film is about.
The good features in the film include:
The chalk on the blackboard.
The different pictures relating to old and new ways.
The way the pictures relate to the voice over.
The way the film makes you think by asking questions like;
“why do we not expect this?” and “do we teach?”
The ideas that the film puts forward such as the teachers
should learn from the students.
This film for me was a good, the content was easy to understand and it made sense and has made me wonder why schools have not updated themselves yet. The only criticism I would give is:
The film always uses the term we, who is we? Is it talking about just the teachers who teach the students or the whole population?
The film suggests an idea that all students work should be done on a computer, but by doing this the students handwriting will never develop and will never have to worry about spelling mistakes because of spell check.
Using images and writing really helps to engage
people.
I have learnt that teachers should be teaching
students relevant information that will help the in
today's lifestyles.
That watching a film is more interesting and
engaging then listening to a teacher talk.
Technology is a big part of society and we need to
use it more in schools.
The film uses camera angles and dialogue to
make a connection of what the people are
feeling.
The embarrassment of the little girl is easy to
see from the beginning but it takes a while
for the viewer to understand what the
grandmother is doing, which does engage
the viewer.
It shows a regular Australian family it
doesn’t categorize anybody so there is
no offence taken from any
socioeconomic status.
The camera angles and dialogue really
lets you relate to how the characters are
feeling and what they see.
It is a film where you have to watch to
see what is going on because there isn’t
much dialogue, some students may not
stay focused.
The points in the film may not be clear to
some and therefore be boring.
I would take the point of embarrassment forward with me when I teach because there are student who do get embarrassed
easily and I can then let them know the other point in the film
of having determination and focus they will achieve the goal
that they set for themselves.
I would get the students to set themselves goals and even for myself setting goals of what I’d like my students to achieve
and by what date and remember the determination of the
grandmother in this film.
By making a short film and showing it to the class as an assignment in P.E I
feel that the students will take more time and put more effort into their
assignment because they want to look good in front of their peers.
By using a video camera in sport the students will also be able to see where
they are making their mistakes when they play, they can then use this in the
real world in their outside of school sport.
Using techniques such camera angles that they will learn in English and using
programs such as Imovie the students would be able to achieve a good
short film on the chosen topic in P.E. By doing this students will have gained
better use of technology, knowledge on how to make a film and what
techniques that are used to make a film but also the content in which goes
into the film, in my case it would have things to do with health and physical
education as my KLA is PD/H/PE.
By working with another subject such as English, the students will be
concentrating on the same area of learning so it will be easier for them to
learn because it is always being taught between the two subjects.
I found that the k-12 film to be a great example of a technological artifact, it was easy to understand it engages
the viewer, it had visuals, ideas and a voice over which made
it so simple and straight forward. It built real world
connections to support students learning through ideas and
facts.
I found that Forbidden didn't relate to the learning of students
and it was harder to understand. Compared to K-12 it was
nowhere near as engaging or interesting.
By using filmmaking in PD/H/PE it will give students
opportunities to extend their learning which will give them the
relevant life skills which they are not gaining at this point in
time.
