The Gift of Today
Send your questions to [email protected] or follow uson twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided
December is here! The month many of us have been
waiting for where adults get to be like children and shout
with glee at receiving gifts. We are in the season of giv-
ing, but guess what? We do not have to wait until
December 25, to appreciate the gifts we will receive –
today, we can be thankful for the gifts we have. One such
gift is the gift of today. We have today.
Many persons did not make it today, they just never
woke up, but we did.
Open your eyes, your heart and your mind and seewhat you have. Instead of complaining constantly about
what we don’t have which makes us miserable and
unhappy, we can change our whole mood and perspec-
tive on life if we pay attention to what we do have. Do
you have a job? Many people don’t. Do you have the gift
of hearing? Some don’t. Aren’t you relieved that you do
not live in a war zone? At least for today…think about it.
Be Grateful. Say thanks often and learn to feel a
sense of gratitude. We are not automatically entitled to
many things, but we get them any way. So instead of
pouting when thing don’t go the way we want and throw-
ing temper tantrums when people don’t behave exactly
as we expect them too, we just need to accept that we do
not have ultimate control over everything and instead
have a spirit of gratitude for our daily blessings.
Share with others. Today is the day when we should
ask ourselves, “what can I do to make a difference?,”
“how can I give back?,” “how can I share some of these
blessings with someone who will benefit from them?” A
gift does not have to cost anything. It can be a smile,
some of your precious time, lending a book, or offering
someone your place in the line. When we help others, it
enriches our own lives.
Gratitude is a state of mind that can help us to over-
look challenges and cope with so many things in life. We
won’t bury our heads in the sand and not acknowledge
that there is disaster and sickness and injustice and ris-
ing prices and death all around us – but we will learn to
appreciate the beauty and the gift of life, in spite of all
that is going on.
Today is a gift and when it is gone, it won’t come
back, so let’s make the most of it.

On a recent yacht delivery to the BVI via Bermuda I
had a chance to visit the wonderful National Maritime
Museum on the archipelago’s western end. Like some of
our museums in the BVI, such as the VI Folk Museum,
Old Government House and the Lower Estate Sugar
Works, museums are fascinating places; repositories of
archives, artifacts and art from bygone days, and in the
case of Bermuda’s National Maritime Museum – all
things historically nautical. Museums remind us of our
history and teach us valuable lessons so as not to repeat
mistakes of the past.
Bermuda’s National Maritime Museum is housed in
the old naval dockyard, which was built to support the
Royal Navy after the American revolutionary war. There
are many interesting exhibits including the origins of
Bermuda’s population, the majority of which were
migrants from Caribbean islands. One exhibit that
attracted my attention was that of the Censorship
Department.
During World War 2 it was found necessary to
inspect all the mail leaving the US for Europe and vice
versa in order to expose any communication that would
hinder the war effort. There were hundreds of censors
and one of the requirements was that they should be lin-
guists, fluent in several languages. The exhibit showed
pictures of the offices at the famous Princess Hotel in
Hamilton where the censors worked as well as sea
planes and ships being unloaded and loaded with literal-
ly tons of mail and packages. It described the living con-
ditions where the censors were billeted and their off duty
pastimes. The exhibit also highlighted some of the inter-
ceptions; one parcel from the US was found to contain
large quantities of diamonds and thousands in ban-
knotes, sent from a Nazi sympathizer and bound for
Germany. Some messages were camouflaged in invisi-
ble ink and told of aircraft production and shipping
movements. Other messages, written on scraps of
paper, were from Jews interred in concentration camps
and begging the US for help.
The exhibit attracted my attention because both
my parents were employed in Bermuda’s Censorship
Department at the beginning of the war; in fact they met
there and towards the end of their service were married
in Bermuda. Of course I knew of this; it was sometimes
a topic of discussion during family gatherings, but I
never had any real insight into the operation. The
Bermuda exhibit changed all that; it was an eye-opener.
My mother was a major performer in their thespian
group, the Censorship Players, often taking the leading
role. They worked long hours but there were bicycling
trips, cocktail parties and swimming in the pool at the
Princess Hotel where they were accommodated. It could
be said that it was a plum assignment and I think that
both my parents realized it. From my point of view it was
a plum assignment too, for without it I wouldn’t be here!
Museums, they not only inform us of our past but
sometimes can be relevant on a personal note.

Life is tough in The Bathtub, the island in the
Louisiana bayou where six-year-old Hushpuppy and
her father Wink live. Hushpuppy’s existence, along with
the other residents of this isolated community, is primal
and mystical. They believe in the presence of prehis-
toric creatures called aurochs and the relationship of
the larger world and their fragile existence.
Hushpuppy, who is both observer and narrator,
bears witness to life here. She lives in a shack made up
of the detritus washed up on The Bathtub’s shore. Her
father, who lives in his own shanty next door, is not well
and metes out tough love to teach his daughter the sur-
vival skills she will need when he is no longer around.
There is an inter-connectedness between Hushpuppy
and her neighbors who embrace life as one large fami-
ly. They drink, they party and they ignore what is hap-
pening on the mainland with abandon. But they are
aware that the world is getting warmer, the ice caps are
melting and that their lifestyle is in jeopardy.
The Bathtub is separated from New Orleans by lev-
ees and when a Katrina-style hurricane floods the com-
munity their tenuous existence becomes a fight for sur-
vival, not just from the rising water, but also for the way
of life they have honed for generations. Life in The
Bathtub is not easy, there are no trappings of modern
civilization, but this is the way these islanders like it
and no one is going to take it away from them. When
mainlanders come and force them to evacuate to a
shelter, they eventually escape what they view as
imprisonment and return to their island home.
There are no professional actors in Beasts of the
Southern Wild. Hushpuppy is played by Quvenzhané
Wallis, who was selected from among 4,000 children
who auditioned for the role, and was seven when the
movie was completed. Dwight Henry, who plays her
father Wink, is a Louisiana baker who has no plans to
give up his profession for Hollywood. They and the
other actors capture the feel and camaraderie of this
isolated community like no professional actors could.
Now nine, Quvenzhané Wallis’ performance is so star-
tling that she is already being talked of as an Oscar
Nominee for best actress, which if chosen would make
her the youngest actress to be nominated for this
honor.
The film is squalid and realistic and yet it is lyrical
and lovely. It is a movie with a big heart and Hushpuppy
is one of the most endearing heroines I have seen in a
long time.

Kristin Chenoweth Is Back In Country With Fox Awards As her year unlike
any other nears its end,
Kristin Chenoweth is
immersing herself in
country music again.
A co-host of last
year’s American Country
Awards on Fox, the
Tony- and Emmy-winning singing and acting dynamo
reteams with Trace Adkins (who’s had the job from the
start) to preside over the third annual event Monday,
Dec. 10. Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts,
Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, Little Big Town and Jake
Owen are among those slated to perform as the fan-
voted honors are announced at Las Vegas’ Mandalay
Bay Hotel & Casino.
“We’re really excited,” Chenoweth says of reuniting
with country star Adkins to guide the show. “We really
get along, and he’s just a cool person. For some reason,
we have this crazy chemistry that people enjoy. I enjoy it
myself, and I was bound and determined to not lose that
date. That was my goal, to be there for that.”
Indeed, the American Country Awards marks one of
Chenoweth’s first big jobs since her devastating accident
last summer on the set of CBS’ The Good Wife. While
filming what was to be a recurring part as a political
reporter, she was struck by a fallen light fixture ... result-
ing in serious injury to her face, skull, neck, spine and
ribs. Her doctors didn’t expect her to resume work this
soon, but she did.
“I just can’t have idle hands,” the typically energetic
Chenoweth confirms. “I was down for two months easily,
then into the third month, I slowly started coming back
out a little bit. It was a life-changing event for me, and I
don’t want to milk it dry, but it’s something that will take
me a while to recover from. I still have injuries that I’m
dealing with, but overall, I’m so lucky to be back. I’m get-
ting there.”
A year ago, while filming the ultimately short-lived
ABC series GCB, Chenoweth had an added incentive for
involvement in the American Country Awards: her own,
then-new country album, Some Lessons Learned.
“Country music is very inclusive,” she reflects, “but
you’ve got to pay your dues there. I think there was a lit-
tle bit of, ‘Wait a minute, now. She may be so-and-so, but
she’s not been in our world.’ When I was asked to do
‘GCB,’ I think it opened up a little bit of acceptance for
me. I’ll do another song from the album on the show this
year; the way we’re doing it is a secret, but I think it’ll be
really fun.”
The end of the country road may not be in sight
yet for Chenoweth in recording terms, since she con-
firms she’s “thinking about” making another album in
the genre.
“I have a lot of other songs in mind, including a cou-
ple that I wrote,” she says. “I have a label that I have to
answer to (Sony), so we’ll see how they feel about it, but
I do see that in my future.”
While country still may not be the music form she’s
most associated with, after such Broadway successes as
Wicked and Promises, Promises, Chenoweth notes that
she “grew up singing that way, and a lot of country music
artists were my idols. I love Julie Andrews and Barbra
Streisand, but I also love Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn.
Those were my people. That was all we had in
Oklahoma, country radio.

Norval Young is a certified FIBA referee—the only
basketball signal caller in the Territory with that tag. He
has also begun the process of becoming a certified
FIFA referee. When that happens, he’ll be the only local
referee certified in two international sports – basket-
ball and football.
When I first saw him in the football locker room, I
stupidly blurted out, “What are you doing here?” I’d only
seen him on the basketball court so it was sort of odd to
see him lacing up his shoes for a football match.
He gave a warm smile. “I’m a football referee too,”
he stated.
His football trek began in January 2012. “I was
always interested in the officiating part of the game and
when Franka Pickering was president, I inquired about it.
She then passed my name on to the executive in charge
and it has been full speed from there,” he explained. “I’m
really enjoying it. It’s a lot of hard work but at the end of
the day, it pays off.”
“Compared to basketball,” he said, “there’s a lot
more running to do and you have to be a lot fitter. You
still have the normal player and game management to
deal with and you have a lot more egos on the football
field,” he observed. “Everyone feels they know the rules
but I don’t think we have it down pat.”
He became a FIBA – certified referee during a
Trinidad clinic in 2006, when the Basketball Federation
sent six officials there. He thought it was a clinic where
he would gain knowledge as he had never refereed a
basketball game before.
“I was more like a table official – scorer, clock man –
those kind of things,” he recalled. “I saw the material
and mechanics they were teaching. When we did the
mechanics test, physical fitness and written tests at the
end of the day when I checked the website, I saw that I
was certified. I was shocked because I never really antic-
ipated that, but things work out for a reason.” He was
the only one of the six to make the grade.
Norval played basketball starting at Bregado Flax,
in the BVI Basketball Federation league on the champi-
onship As Enforcers Squad. He also played on Virgin
Gorda with Yardies on the old court. During his studied
in Holland, Jamaica and England, h e played for the
school teams. “We are always successful in one way or
the other,” he noted.
Volleyball was another sport he als loved and
played on the Virgin Roots team in the local league.
But, his passion has been refereeing. Young said
he’ll continue getting more football refereeing experi-
ence and when the opportunity arises and an assessor is
in the area, once recommended, he’ll seek certification.
“I will just continue to do what I can do and do my
best, continue to improve and hopefully when that time
comes, it will all work out as well,” he said.
