Dear Friends:

We have been quite busy since we launched the inaugural issue of Woman’s Work. Our work – improving the lives of women and infants – is never done!

As we continue to settle into our new home, I would like to express my appreciation to our donors who have helped make the new Woman’s even better than we ever imagined. Recent projects made possible by generous donations to our New Campus Gifts Initiative include the building of the developmental nursery in our Newborn and Infant Intensive Care Unit (NICU), new video integration technology and a one-mile walking trail around our lake.

Furthermore, grant monies have allowed us to provide transportation to and from treatment for breast cancer patients and keep our Mobile Mammography Coach on the road. In 2012, the coach provided 5,241 mammograms yielding 28 cancer diagnoses. Fifty percent of the patients screened had no insurance.

Thank you for your continued friendship and support of Woman’s work. We could not do what we do without you.

Sincerely,

Lynn S. Weill Vice President Chief Development Officer

New Transport Incubator Protects the Most Precious CargoIt is what every expectant parent hopes for – a normal delivery and a healthy newborn. Unfortunately, many children struggle to come into the world. Many high-risk newborns are born prematurely or sick and need highly specialized care just to survive.

Woman’s Hospital already offers top-quality care to little ones within the walls of the Newborn and Infant Intensive Care Unit (NICU). We also offer the same level of care and expertise for newborns who may need to be transported from around the state to Woman’s.

The Airborne Voyager Infant Transporter not only provides easy maneuverability and a stable environment for transporting newborn infants, but is specially designed to deliver high-frequency ventilation to the most critically ill babies. This specialized transport incubator, in addition to several traditional transport incubators, was used for moving babies born weeks or even months early from Woman’s former campus at Airline Highway and Goodwood Boulevard to its new campus six miles away.

“We anticipated that we would have some infants who were too critical to move with our regular transport incubators,” said Laurel Kitto, director of Woman’s NICU. “These babies – specifically, those who have congenital anomalies of the lungs, or those whose lungs are highly susceptible to long-term injury – would likely have a poor outcome if not placed on a high-frequency ventilator.”

Besides providing a stable, climate-controlled environment for babies fighting for their lives, these transport incubators feature cardiac monitors, temperature control to keep infants warm and a special ventilator that allows the most unstable infants to be moved to Woman’s NICU. Woman’s has already acquired one of these incubators at a cost of $100,000.

Transport incubators are just one example of the high cost of keeping pace with the type of technology necessary for treating newborns in need. Woman’s is currently one of the few hospitals in Louisiana with the capability to transport a baby with this method of ventilation. Philanthropy is key to Woman’s success in providing state-of-the-art care.

On Saturday, March 16, Woman’s Hospital offered a sincere “thank you” to many of its major donors at an evening celebration. The Leadership Donor Recognition Reception, held in the hospital’s glass-enclosed lobby, allowed Woman’s to express its appreciation to donors and acknowledge their generosity. Speakers included Teri Fontenot, president and CEO, Woman’s Hospital; Dr. Frank Breaux, chair-elect, Woman’s Hospital Board of Directors; and Amy Benton, a grateful Woman’s patient.

Special thanks to The Fabre Group, who underwrote the event, and to Lance Hayes Flowers, who donated the floral decorations. Event decorations also included “tickled pink” photos of guests’ babies and grandbabies.

Teri Fontenot spoke about the importance of philanthropic support to Woman’s. “As a non-profit organization, the hospital faces many challenges due to the changing face of healthcare, and with donors’ help, we are able to continue to address critical community issues such as HIV/AIDS, low birth weight babies and sexual assault, just to name a few.”

Amy Benton, former patient and vice president of marketing at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, spoke about her son who is now a healthy 3-year-old but was born at 26 weeks and spent four months in Woman’s NICU. Benton thanked the donors and emphasized the impact their gifts make on individual lives.

Sam & Dana Agnew

New Campus Gifts Initiative giving opportunities are still available.

Dana Agnew knows what it’s like to be a mother of a premature baby. What it’s like for a huge piece of her heart to be so tiny. What it’s like to realize that her baby’s new life isn’t promised. And what it’s like to wait for good news and bad in a Newborn and Infant Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

“Our youngest daughter was born two months early. What we experienced 30 years ago was so different compared to the amazing NICU Woman’s has now,” Dana said. “I visited my daughter daily, and there was no place for me to stay with her. When I recently visited Woman’s NICU, I was amazed to see private rooms and mothers feeling like they were at home.”

Dana and her husband Sam are now the proud parents of five children and also have three grandchildren. As generous donors to Woman’s Victory Open Golf Tournament and Woman’s Annual Giving Campaign for several years, the Agnews recently chose to support Woman’s New Campus Gifts Initiative as well through a planned gift of life insurance.

“Of all the options available to name at Woman’s new campus, we felt like naming the Reception Area at Woman’s NICU would be most appropriate given our family’s own personal experiences,” Sam said.

Dana and Sam hope that their gift will help many more sick babies struggling to survive and support the parents and family members that love their newborns so dearly.

Sam added, “I’ve lived in Baton Rouge since 1971. I love it, and anything that can make this city a regional asset – like Woman’s NICU – is a great thing to support.”

NICU rooms were designed to meet the needs of babies and their families, as well as enhance care provided by staff and physicians.

The Dana and Sam Agnew NICU Reception Area includes ample space for family and friends to gather.

Have you considered including Woman’s Hospital Foundation in your will or estate plans? Woman’s Hospital Foundation established Founders and Friends to build a long-term sustainable endowment to support Woman’s Hospital and its ability for generations to come to improve the health of women and infants. It is comprised of individuals who have made or have notified Woman’s Hospital of their intent to make a planned gift through their estate plans. Donors who have made outright gifts of $10,000+ to the endowment are also recognized as Founders and Friends.

Woman’s launched its fourth Annual Giving Campaign earlier this year and set an ambitious goal of $555,000 to fund critical programs for babies, women and women with cancer. More than 50 community leaders have volunteered their time and talent to help reach this goal.

Annual Giving Campaign funds support programs and services offered by Woman’s that address some of the most critical healthcare issues facing our region, state and community. Meeting these community needs becomes a greater challenge for Woman’s and in 2012 resulted in a shortfall of nearly $33 million for the hospital, which includes unreimbursed costs of the Medicaid program.

Woman’s Board of Directors supports the campaign, and earlier this year Woman’s Employee Campaign raised more than $100,000 toward the overall goal.

With generous support from our community, Woman’s Hospital provided the following vital services and programs for women and babies in 2012:

More than $32,000 raised to date in 2013 from hosted fundraising events!

Woman’s New Campus Gifts Initiative was established to seek philanthropic support from

the community to add several critical components into the new campus that will further

enhance technology, provide an unprecedented patient experience and, more importantly,

help save lives. In 2008, when construction on the new campus was halted due to the

economic downturn that affected the nation and our state, fiscally prudent changes were

made to the size and scope of Woman’s original plan. Generous philanthropic support

allowed, and continues to allow, us to restore a number of these elements that add to the

healthcare delivery system for women and babies now and in the future.

This New Campus Gifts Initiative donation was made by Cordell and Ava Haymon, Brian and Barbara Haymon, Martin Haymon, and Dr. Rachel Haymon and Ken Macdonald in honor of their mother Helen, a long-time Woman’s Volunteer.

The Wall of Stars, located on the second floor of the Labor and Delivery family waiting area, commemorates the birth of babies born at Woman’s Hospital. Each nameplate on the Wall of Stars can be designed in one of five pink or blue shapes inscribed with the name and birth date of your loved one. An interactive touch screen allows you to look up a photo of your star from the Goodwood campus Hall of Stars.

By purchasing a tile for the new Wall of Stars, you not only honor the birth of a child in a memorable way, but you also make a donation to Woman’s

Hospital. The tax deductible portion of your gift enables Woman’s to fund programs that improve the health of women and infants.

Dr.RenéeSavoy Harris and the Harris Walking Trail

Dr. Renée Savoy Harris is always on the move – whether she’s delivering a baby or pounding the pavement. An obstetrician at Woman’s for 25 years, Dr. Harris is also an avid walker and bike rider. She walks and bikes regularly, not only to relax and unwind from her often stressful days, but also for health reasons – which is why she was compelled to generously donate the funds to build Woman’s walking trail.

At one mile long, the walking trail circles Woman’s lake and offers outdoor respite from the busy activity in the hospital. Employees use the trail to burn lunchtime calories, and some even hold meetings while walking. It also allows family members – and their energetic children – a place for fresh air and recess.

The Office of Development and the Wellness Committee dedicated the Harris Walking Trail on Wednesday, April 3 – also known as National Walking Day – with a ribbon cutting and reception.

“I love everything about the outdoors – sunshine, water, plants, wildlife – “There were a lot of opportunities to leave my mark on this amazing new campus. The walking trail just fit my approach to life. I love everything about the outdoors – sunshine, water, plants, wildlife – and I wanted others to have a place to experience those simple joys in life,” Dr. Harris said.

and I wanted others to have a place to experiencethosesimplejoysinlife.”

Dr. Harris encourages her patients to use the walking trail after appointments. “Exercise is important for everyone – including pregnant women.” Her patients can also be seen using the walking trail to get back into shape after having their babies.

“The walking trail isn’t just for our patients and their families. It’s for the entire community, and it feels great when I see people utilizing it.”

Dr. Harris received a Leave a Legacy Award at the National Philanthropy Day Awards luncheon in November 2012 in Baton Rouge for her legacy gift of the walking trail, which she made in part through a planned gift.
