Swot analysis
Week 1
The SWOT Analysis model is based on the UK Design Council ‘Blueprint’ model. There are 24
criteria and each have been allocated a score between 1 and 6. These scores denote how
good I think I am at each of the criteria. (1 = basic, 2 = developing, 3 = competent, 4 =
proficient, 6 = professional). The criteria have been split into 4 categories: skills &
knowledge, project process, enterprise & marketing and values & vision. These give me set
areas where I can see the skills I am strong at and those I am weak at. My strongest current
skills lie within the Skills and Knowledge area with Project Process coming next. My weakest
areas are enterprise & marketing and values & vision. I hope to build on these skills over
the next few years and will review this by adding extra layers to the SWOT Diagram to see
how my progress has been. As part of this exercise I have also written an indepth review
about my SWOT and have made a table on how I aim to improve these areas, these have
been split into categories that are essential, important and desirable.

Alison Kennedys SWOT Analysis 2012/13
As part of my PDF2 studies I have written a SWOT Analysis of my skills and knowledge so far.
It has been produced using 24 criteria (as shown above in the diagram) which list the
knowledge and experience needed to become a successful professional designer.
This Analysis will help me to understand my current strengths and weaknesses showing me
areas where I need to gain more experience and knowledge for my studies and future
career. Some of the skills and knowledge I require can be learnt through further personal
research, but some will probably only be best learnt through experience of working in
industry. For this reason I have set these as long term aims.
Skills and Knowledge
Awareness of Diverse and Global Range of Design Cultures and Languages
I would like to think that I am fairly aware of different design cultures and languages. I have
travelled a lot and feel this has opened my eyes culturally. We have also been studying this
in our theoretical lectures. I find this area interesting and will spend more time reading
around these subjects to increase my knowledge further.
Experience of Design research, analysis & synthesis
I spend a lot of time on research, analysis and the synthesis of my designs. I enjoy these
areas of design and feel I do them well. I feel these are key areas to producing a successful
design. I have recently been compiling my research on Photoshop to save time with cutting
and pasting individual images by hand. I feel that I need more practise of design synthesis so
that I can complete this part quickly so that I can focus on other areas.
Visualising/Prototyping Skills and Aptitudes in a Range of media and forms
-I am aware that I spend too long on these areas in my design projects and I wish to
complete these aspects quicker but still comprehensively in order to finalise my design
presentation boards in more detail. I would also like to develop my sketching and drawing
skills so that they become more fluid and natural. I will do this by keeping a sketchbook
Alison Kennedy, Interior Design, Level 5, Salford University
5
which I will use once a week. I believe the best way for me to sketch is by being out and
about in the urban environment so will actively try to fit this into my free time.
Aptitude in Compiling Interim and Summative Design Presentations
I have been continuously compiling presentations throughout my time at university. I feel
this is one of my strongest areas as I like attention to detail. In these presentations I have
been compiling work together for individual projects as well as standing up in front of a class
to talk about certain topics. I would like more experience of standing up and doing a
presentation as I still find this difficult.
Aptitude for Designing through a Digital Platform
I have been using computers during my studies and really enjoy using Auto CAD and
Photoshop. However, I do struggle with my computer skills and knowing the importance of
these to any design company, would like to spend more time working with computers so
they become easier to use. To become more confident with computers I will set aside one
hour per week where I can follow online tutorials in order to improve my skills on software
such as sketch up which I still have difficulties with.
Experience of Process, Component and Production Technology
I do not have a lot of experience in this area but I am learning more with each project that I
complete. For each project I will research into different technologies to help improve my
knowledge further.
Project Process
Experience of Design Process and Methodologies
I have already learnt a lot about this subject through my university studies but I know there
are many more processes of a professional design practice that I have not yet done eg mood
boards. I will be learning more about these processes this coming year through my projects.
Alison Kennedy, Interior Design, Level 5, Salford University
6
Experience of Team Leadership & Management and Experience of managing Client
Relationships and collaboration
As a mature student I do have some transferable people skills from my previous
employment as an outdoor instructor where I worked as a Course Leader. I liaised with
teachers and lead a team of instructors, ensuring that the course ran smoothly and dealt
with any issues that occurred. These skills will help me when working in the design industry
as I am able to communicate effectively with people from different cultures and
backgrounds.
Experience of Costing projects and Fee Negotiation
I believe that some skills such as fee negotiation and costing will come through working in
industry. However I will research into the current costing’s that an Interior designer is
allowed to charge so I have a better understanding of this topic.
Experience of planning and Managing Project Activity
I have experience of planning and managing my own project activities through university.
However, this experience is limited as I have no experience of building my design concepts
in reality. I believe this will come through working in industry. I hope to get work placement
in the second semester which will add to my experience in this area.
Experience of a Wide range of Project types and Scales of Innovation
I have completed a wide range of Projects at university including house design, nature trail
design and product design. I enjoy working in all areas of design and would like to continue
doing so in the future. This area will continue to increase both in university and once I am
working in industry.
Enterprise and Marketing
Experience of Project Procurement and Client Consultation
I feel that I have already gained some experience through my previous job with client
consultation in the sense that I am able to talk to and discuss the issues and needs of the
Alison Kennedy, Interior Design, Level 5, Salford University
7
client. I am used to dealing with problems that may occur and am willing to work on my own
or as part of a team to resolve any issues. However I do not have any experience in project
procurement.
Knowledge of Design Sectors and Creative Industries
I have been proactive in researching into different design sectors and creative industries and
have started to compile information on companies which are of interest to me. I would like
to work in the commercial, leisure or residential sector and will be targeting companies in
these areas for my work placement in the second semester.
Experience in Planning Continuing Professional Development
I have experience in this area through my last job. My company regularly asked us to review
our skills and encouraged me to develop in my role by going on useful courses.
Experience and Understanding of Legislation and regulations
I understand that it will be very important as a designer to understand about the legislation
and regulations to avoid any expensive mistakes which could cost the client extra money. I
will try to research these as much as possible when I’m completing my projects so that I can
start to build upon my knowledge of this area.
Experience of design budgets, account management, practice marketing and promotion
I also have no knowledge of budgets, account management, marketing or promotion. I do
however understand how important these are to a business and feel it is essential that I gain
some expertise in these areas. In order to learn more about these areas I have signed up to
five of the academy Enterprise Events which have been arranged by the university to give
people a better understanding of business. If I go to five or more of these sessions I will also
receive a certificate which will be able to go into my portfolio. I would one day like to have
my own business and feel these skills will be essential to me. For this reason I am also
considering taking the business option for my year 6 studies.
Alison Kennedy, Interior Design, Level 5, Salford University
8
Values and Vision
Understanding and Practice of Ethical Business Standards
I do not know what the Ethical Business Standards are, but I will do some research into this
to find out what they are so that I can ensure I am using them when working in industry.
Subscription to policies and Standards of Ethical design
I have learnt about some of the issues in my theory classes, however this knowledge is
limited. Issues such as expanding urban populations and sustainability along with designing
for the ageing society will all become essential aspects for the design industry to think
about. It will be important to understand the policies and standards to ensure that I will be
producing ethical design for society.
Commitment to and Understanding of the Imperatives of Professional Practice
I am aware that it is essential to be professional when practicing design. The client will be
putting a lot of faith time and money into you and it is essential that you meet their
expectations, being on time, organised and reliable are just some of the basics that you
should conform to.
Awareness and Appreciation of Key Design Futures and Innovation Trends
I understand how important it is to be forward thinking in the design industry in terms of
having a successful business in a competitive market. It is important to forecast future
trends both in the market and for society as a whole. It is the forward thinking businesses
that do their best in the market as they cater for the needs of the client. I find this very
interesting and would like to know more about the issues that will be facing so many
designers in the future. I will continue to read design magazines and journals in order to
keep my knowledge and awareness of issues current. I will also try to use this knowledge in
my university studies whenever possible.
Commitment to the Advancement of Design Knowledge, Expertise and Value
I am very committed to this area and have subscribed to a design magazine to keep myself
Alison Kennedy, Interior Design, Level 5, Salford University
9
up to date with this topic. I believe this will help me in my designs as I will be more aware of
current affairs in the design world.
Awareness and Practice of User Centred Design
I believe it is very important to create user centred design as there are so many
needs/requirements that need to be catered for e.g. the elderly, children and disabilities. It
is creating for the user that will make you successful, without this practice and awareness
you will not be successful.
My Intents For the Coming Year
· To keep a weekly sketchbook to make my drawings and sketches quick and fluid.
· To spend one hour per week doing a computer tutorial to become more confident
with computers.
· Research into the fees for interior design.
· Reading design magazines/journals to keep up to date with current issues or trends.
· Complete at least five Academy Enterprise Events.
· Research further into legislation and regulations whilst completing my projects.
· To research and Practice of Ethical Business Standards.
· To complete a work placement in my second semester.
In Conclusion
Although I have had a couple of successful years in terms of my grades I realise I still have a
very long way to go before I will become a fully competent designer. I hope through extra
work and time I can improve on the areas that I currently lack knowledge, skill or experience
so that I can become a successful designer.

and Desirable. These show the areas I would like to improve and how I will achieve this over
the next year.

Critical Review of a Previously Completed Project
Week 2
We were asked to review a piece of work that we thought could have been improved on
and then to actually improve one aspect of the project. For me it was the Castlefiels town
house project which I designed for a young couple in Manchester. I really hadn’t enjoyed
this project and this showed on my final client board which had been rushed and didn’t look
very good. It obviously had no thought put into it and it didn’t look like it belonged to the
rest of the project.
To start with I completed a 300 word review on the project based around 7 of the 24 criteria
from the swot analysis. This enabled me to focus on how to improve the project aswell as
my skills and write about it reflectively. See below for the review.
Critical Review of a Previously Completed Project
The Project
The Brief
Completed: 11/05/2012
Designing a City House
Design an urban house for a young professional couple. They have purchased a distinctive building plot and want a bespoke home specifically designed to suit their needs. At the moment they live in a loft style apartment nearby, which they love but have grown out of.
The house will be the couple’s main residence. They will both need to work from home: he is an art dealer and has other entrepreneurial business interests, she is a journalist and successful novelist.
The couple own a barge which will be moored in the canal directly outside the property. They also own a converted farmhouse in Derbyshire. You have been asked to be influenced by Frank Lloyd –Wright, whom your clients admire: interpret and apply architectural principles of the architect - do not copy
Essential (but not definitive) accommodation:
Distinctive Entrance: there will need to be access from both canal side and railway arch side.

12
Entertaining space/s (gallery)
Work spaces
Living spaces
Master Bedroom suite
Guest accommodation
Utility areas including (laundry; wc’s)
Your design should reflect the following;
• The difference between personal space (living) and public space (working/entertaining/utility/guest accommodation?) and their co-existance
• Waterside locality: their barge
• Vertical nature of site
• Neighbouring developments: styles and construction
• Be informed by the site information and construction restraints

Hand Drawn Client Board
Awareness of User Centred Design
Designed for a young professional Couple.
Incorporated all of their needs; office space, a gallery and guest accommodation.
It had both rear and front access and was in keeping with surrounding area.
This area of the project was successful as it met all of the requirements.
Experience of Design Research, Analysis and Synthesis
Thorough research on, Frank Lloyd Wright, Falling Water, the Castlefield Site and construction materials.
I made a model showing space and flow through the building.
I could make models of the other concepts as well.
I consistently analysed my work for the best concept.
This area was a success.
Visualising/Prototyping Skills and Aptitudes in a Range of Media and Formats
Concept drawings were a good standard and showed the development over time.
Model was good but could have been more precise in size.
Client board was hand drawn and painted in watercolour but it was rushed and didn’t look as it should.
I need to allocate more time to completing the client boards.
Alison Kennedy, Interior Design, Level 5, Salford University
16
Aptitude for Designing through a Digital Platform
I avoided using Sketchup as I don’t feel confident with it.
AutoCAD skills are of a good standard and technical drawings look good and are thorough.
I will spend time practicing Sketchup.
Aptitude in compiling interim and summative design presentation
Technical Drawing Board was of a high Standard.
Client Board was a low standard.
Research/development books and model were a high standard.
I will allocate time more effectively on future projects.
Experience of Design Process and Methodologies
I completed, research, concept generation, concept development, prototyping of concept and technical/client boards.
This was handed in digital format.
More experience will come when working in industry.
Experience of Planning and Managing Project Activity
Project was handed in on time.
Certain areas needed more time e.g. client board.
I will use a structured gnat chart in future to allocate time effectively.
The review of the board can be seen on the next page.
Revision of a Previously Completed Work
Week 3
As part of last week’s review I needed to complete a revision of part of the project, because my client board was my least favourite aspect I decided to re-do that. To make it better I chose a few of my favourite images ad added extra colour to them using pencil. They had originally been painted in watercolour but this is a skill I currently lack and the finished images didn’t have much depth to them. Adding the pencil on top really helped to being the images to life. Because it was based on Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water house I decided to use the colours that he used within the interior as the background to the board. I feel that this has made the board gel with the rest of the project as well as look more professionally appealing. Please see the copy of the board on the next page.

Entrepreneurial Assets Model
Week 3
As part of our module we had guest speakers come to talk to us about our professional development during our session today we were given a task to do. We were given a chart to fill in to find out how many entreprenurial skills we had, we had to mark ourselves out of 5 for each. Luckily because I have worked in the past I had acquired a few of these skills through my jobs. This chart helps me to discover what other skills I need to improve to become a good all round designer.
Alison Kennedy, Interior Design, Level 5, Salford University
18
Innovative Persona Mapping
Week 3
This is my Innovative Persona Mapping diagram. I created it in illustrator, I haven’t used illustrator much before so I had to teach myself how to use it. It was a bit confusing to begin with but it soon started to come together.
The diagram shows my Creative Practice Personas and once again related to the Swot Analysis which I previously completed. It is based on Tom Kelly’s book 10 Faces of Innovation. Each persona shows a different characteristic that the person has and helps to show what area you would be good working in e.g., project process seems to currently be my strongest area.
Director
I feel I am a good director as I can be quite strong when working in a team towards a deadline. I can be organised and like to know what is going on as a whole rather than just what I am doing. I believe I have the skills to help motivate others when they are feeling the pressure.
Collaborator
I have had to work in a lot of teams in the past from my job as a course leader in the outdoor industry to doing voluntary work in Uganda and Costa Rica. I understand the importance of a team and what different people can bring to it, so I am able to take a step back and allow other people to come forward to use or improve on their skills as well.
Care Giver
I believe I put the client first in all of my design, I feel the only way to be a good designer is to listen to the needs of the client so they get what they are paying for. I don’t think design should just look attractive but it should be practical and useful as well.
Experimenter
I like to use processes within my design, I am quite a methodical worker and feel this is the way I achieve my best designs. I also don’t believe in using the first design I come up with but to constantly develop new ideas asking others for their thoughts, throughout the process. This often means I won’t have a design solution until near the end but I can always guarantee it’s the best one.

I have completed a couple of versions of my CV (above). I wanted it to have a similar
graphic identity to my current blog so I used similar colours and writing to do this. It has
been difficult to get my CV down onto one page as I have done so much since leaving
college, but I think I’m getting there. This however will be an on-going process and will
change for each job application to suit the company I want to work for.
Blog
Week 1 – On going
Below is a screen shot of my blog which I have been working on since week 1. Up to now I
have found this task very confusing as I haven’t worked on computers this way before. I
started my initial Blog on Wordpress but decided to change to blogger after a few weeks
because it was a bit easier to work with, although I still find it confusing. I will use this a a
practice run for a website I will need to complete later on in the year.
I have however started to think of my graphic identity which I want to be quite classical as
this is the style of design I would like to work in when I graduate, below you can see my logo
using the letters of my name and D (design). I made a few different logos before I settled on
this one, no doubt it will change again before I graduate.

Personal Creative Direction Infographic
Week 6
This week I have created my Personal Creative Direction Infographic (see below). I have
based it on a tree to help show my professional growth as an individual. It shows my career
destinations at the top, what I’d like to be doing in 2014, 2015, 2020, 2023 and 2025. Below
this is the attributes I will need to achieve my goals, the skills and personality traits I will
need to succeed. At the bottom are the Values and Ethics that I believe I will also need to
achieve my goals. This diagram gives me a focus and a plan on how to achieve my targets.
It can be changed should my destinations alter in any way to help me re focus my plan of
action.

CPD Plan
Week 7
Below is my CPD plan (2 diagrams) I have composed the next few exercises for a particular
company Ben Huckerby Design in Leeds. I really like the looks of this company; they are a
small company and complete a variety of different projects from Leisure, residential,
commercial to exhibition. It looks really interesting and I like their style. They also work
with a lot with students and have a scheme set up to help them. I believe it would be a very
good company to work for and it is accessible from where I live so transport won’t be a
problem. I have used the criteria from my SWOT Analysis as well as my Innovative Personas
to pinpoint the skills that would most help me to get into this company. This will need to be
reviewed as my thoughts or the industry changes.

Statement of Advocacy
Week 8 – Hard Copy
Below are 2 versions of my Statement of Advocacy this can be posted online, sent as a hard
copy or emailed. It talks about what point I am in my career development, what motivates
me and my design, why I would like to work for that particular company, what I can offer
them and how I work. This can be sent alongside my CV when applying for a job. It will
need to be changed for each job application so it is personal to the company.
I have been careful when designing these to ensure I have a strong Graphic Identity
throughout my work so it all matches should I apply for a job.

Portfolio
Week 9 – on-going
Over the next few weeks I will attempt to make my first portfolio. To do this I will go over
previously completed projects and aim to make them better. There are a few factors I will
need to consider for each project to ensure they are relevant and up to date, these are:
Sustainability
Embodied energy of materials
User needs and Behaviour
Specification Strategy
I will consider these factors and make changes where necessary to ensure my projects are
up to date, professional and relevant to the design industry. This will be an on-going
process that may need to change before I apply to jobs.

Wix Website
Week 18 – On going
During Block 4 I have been creating my website using Wix as a platform. I have found this
much easier than the blog and much quicker to work with. As a result I have been able to
design it more how I like. To fill my website I have been downloading my work from the
past year onto the website, all the work opens up through links to Issuu. This will enable the
viewer to look at my work clearly up close with no distortion to the images.
I have really enjoyed creating the website and have now gained skills that I never before
had. This will be invaluable should I decide to work freelance in the future.
I have tried to make the website as easy to navigate as possible with one main menu along
the top of the screen which is visible on all pages. Each page then has its own sub menu
which allows you to navigate within the different areas.
Each area has work which I have completed from each of the blocks as well as a few extras.
It also gives examples of Art work I have created outside of the university environment
which shows off the other skills I have other than those learned on my course.
I have also given a bit of information about myself, including my education to date, a bit of a
biography and info about the exhibition I took part in last December 2012 in the Self Made
Gallery, Manchester. I have also added a bit of information about my live project that I am
currently completing for my Work Placement module and I plan to add more information
such as my work Journal and placement presentation, to this once the module is completed.
This is an on-going piece of work and I have changed my style slightly. I have done this as
after my last project of Production Design I have decided this is a route I would like to
pursue. I feel that this design suits this industry much better as it is interesting and has a
handmade feel to it. As most Production Designers use traditional drafting skills I feel this is
a more appropriate theme to follow.
However like I said this is an on-going project and I would now like to rework my logo, CV
and general graphic identity over the summer break so that they all fit together more
harmoniously.
I have no illusion however that I will defiantly be able to get into this sector as I realise it is
very difficult to get into and make a name for yourself. For this reason I would like to keep
my options open. To do this I will create two separate personas over the summer break, a
Production Design one and an Interior Design one. I will have a different Graphic Identity
for each as well as different Logos and portfolios. This way should I find it difficult to break
into the world of Production design I will have a backup plan.

My Reviewed SWOT Analysis
Week 24 - April 2013
Below is a copy of my reviewed Swot Analysis which I originally completed in week 1. As
you can see there have been significant areas where I feel I have improved (shown in pink)
especially within the Values and Vision, Enterprise and Marketing and Project Process
categories. There is still a long way to go however, until I am a true all-rounder but I believe
this will be an on-going process throughout my life as a designer, as it is an industry that is
forever changing.
Innovative Persona Mapping
Week 24 - Apr 2013
At the same time as doing my SWOT Diagram I thought I would see if I had developed any more innovation personas. I discovered that I could add an anthropologist to it. I feel like I have become more of an Anthropologist over the course of the year as I am thinking of solutions more readily. Since being on my work placement (working on a film, doing the Set Design for an MA student) I also realised how often I do manage to create simple solutions to problems that really helped them out. See below for my 2 persona mapping diagrams from October and this month.

Creative Practice Career Calendar
Week 25 April 2013
This is my Creative practice Calendar which I have created for my website. It is my plan of
what I need to do until September 2014. I will have graduated then and if I follow this plan
it will help me to secure a job on graduation. I have started the calendar in June 2013 as
this is when I want to start thinking about my dissertation and major project for next year.
Ideally I would like to have my research for both and written my first draft of my
dissertation by the time I come back to university in September. This will mean I am in a
much stronger position for my final year and hopefully graduate with the degree that I
want. Once again this Calendar can be changed and added to if I decide to do more work or
focus on different things.

My Design Manifestos
As part of Block 1 – 2012
Below is a list of my own manifestos I created after a lecture with Mik. They help to inspire
me and keep me thinking on the right path. I love to travel which comes across in these, I’ve
seen a lot of interesting things already but would love to see more. I believe this will be able
to help me with my design as the more you see the more knowledge and inspiration you will
have.
Design should be inclusive to all, nobody should be excluded
Beautiful design will inspire for generations to come
Travel for experience and let your creations be your journal
Design doesn’t need to be complex to be brilliant
Creating user-centred design will help you become a great designer
Sustainability is the key to unlock the door to the future
Never give up there will always be a solution
