Hello, my name is Nina Wang.
I am a second year Honors Co-op Bachelor of Architectural Studies student at the University of Waterloo.This portfolio is a selected collection of my thoughts and ideas about the way that space shapes the various aspects of our lives. I am constantly in pursuit of bettering my understanding of the world, and the relationships between the large picture and my tiny self.

In recent years, crude oil supply has been depleting rapidly around the world, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico. The Cantarell oil field, which in the past was mexico’s largest source of crude oil, has harvested almost all of the available oil in the area. It is predicted that thousands of offshore oil platforms like the Cantarell oil field will be abandoned in the near future. The process of demolishing the abandoned oil platforms will cause dire consequences to the surrounding environment and ecosystems. Moreover, these oil platforms are excellent sources of strong industrial structure, and the demolishing of these resources would be both wasteful, expensive, and illogical.

The offshore project proposes to renovate the the defunct oil platforms into resort hotels, taking advantage of the warm equatorial climate and panoramic ocean view that the pre-existing
structure offers. Approximately 150km away from the shores of mexico, the Canterell platform is easily accessible by boat, cargo ships and ferries. The unique design of the box frame truss,
recycled from the derrick and flare towers of the oil platform, mimics the movement of the ocean waves and symbolizes the transition from the rigid, industrial structure to the fluid,
organic architecture that can be appreciated both for its form and function.

A true collector does not merely collect, but also designs, creates, curates, and displays the objects of his or her fancy. This fusion home/studio/gallery designed for a marble lover unites the four components
of collecting into one, and fully embodies the “collector” lifestyle. Taking precedence from the Eames Residence, the work space and
living space has been divided into two separate buildings, joined by a courtyard. The studio and kiln rooms overlook the Grand River, which,
with its refractive and translucent qualities - similar to that of a marble - may inspire the collector in his or her design process.

The inner marble wall on the street facade is carved out along the staircase at eyelevel, creating niches that hold the marble collection.
From far away, one’s eyes are caught by the sharp glimmers of the marbles in the light, and are inevitably curious to approach the
wall. The intricate play of the refraction and diffusion of light on the colourful marbles slows the viewer down allong the stairs, giving
a new identity to the circulation space which would otherwise be ignored and rushed through rather than appreciated. The glazed
outer wall allows passersby to marvel at the collection at anytime without intruding on the private life of the collector, and provides one
more transparent layer to glass marble collection.

Can a space facilitate a strong sense of community?

The shared meal is often considered the ultimate symbol of unity; family members gather around the dinner table to eat, talk, and enjoy one another’s company. In many households, however, the table can become more of a barrier to social interaction than a catalyst. The overly spacious design of the table surface allows laptops, cellular phones, and other distractions pile up, creating both physical and social barriers between the members, leading to meals which may occupy the same space and time but are in no way ‘shared’. The project proposes to radically transform the architecture of the dinner table, and to paradoxically reunite the members of the community by physically dividing the space.

The troublesome threshold through the proposed table-wall encourages cooperation
through opening of the window rather than crossing threshold by one’s self.
Food is located on one side of the table-walll, while utensils are placed on the other. An collaborative
exchange must happen through the opening in order for the meal to be successfully prepared.

The table-wall pushes the limits of how narrow a table can be. Measuring at only 6 inches wide, the surface allows just enough space for a mug - certainly no laptops or books can
be placed on this table to distract the participants!
