Reflecting on God’s Word WHO IS THE KING OF GLORY? Ancient Israel understood God to be the only “King” that they needed. As time went on, human envy and insecurity crept in, and they wanted a king like their neighbors, an earthly king who would lead them to greatness. God’s people came to depend upon and find their strength in frail humanity rather than their faithful Creator. When that failed, they hoped for a human Messiah King to give them back that fragile sense of security. We can understand, perhaps, their confusion upon encountering the powerfully gentle and gloriously humble Jesus. THE KING OF HEARTS Are you aware that today’s joyous feast is not even one hundred years old? In his 1925 encyclical Quam Primas, Pius XI established the feast of Christ the King. Remember what the world was like in those days—the rise of nationalism and secularism in Europe and un-Godly false prophets, leading inexorably to the Passion of the Holocaust and wide-ranging martyrdoms. No wonder the pope was anxious to show the world a true King! Saint Luke today goes straight to the heart of kingship, of a king’s devotion to his beloved people. In this topsy-turvy kingdom, we see not a king decked in power and glory, but the crucified “King of the Jews” who robes himself in the suffering of a sad and lonely world. His forgiveness and heart-breaking love throughout his passion is a hard act for humans to follow, and yet Jesus gives us his life and death as a model. And then he tells us that, along with the “good criminal,” we will be with him “in Paradise.” What more could we ever ask? It is fitting that Pius’ encyclical ties this royal feast to the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This King who gave his heart to humanity in the sacrificial love feast of Good Friday gives his heart every day to a broken world still trying to figure out who he is. Copyright © J. S. Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios ¿QUIÉN ES EL REY DE LA GLORIA? El antiguo Israel entendió que Dios era el único “rey” que necesitaban. Con el paso del tiempo, la envidia y la inseguridad se fueron
metiendo, y ellos querían un rey como el de sus vecinos, un rey terrenal que los llevara a la grandeza. El pueblo de Dios llegó a depender y encontrar su fortaleza en la fragilidad humana en lugar de la de su Creador fiel. Cuando eso falló, esperaban por un rey mesías que les devolviera ese frágil sentido de seguridad. Podemos entender su confusión, quizás, al encontrar a Jesús intensamente gentil y gloriosamente humilde. EL REY DE CORAZONES ¿Sabías que la gloriosa fiesta de hoy no tiene ni siquiera cien años? En la encíclica Quam Primas escrita por Pío XI en 1925 se estableció la fiesta de Cristo Rey. Recuerda cómo era el mundo en esos días, el surgimiento del nacionalismo, el secularismo en Europa y falsos profetas que llevaron al Holocausto y vastos martirios. ¡No es de extrañar que el Papa estuviera preocupado por mostrar al mundo a un verdadero rey! Hoy san Lucas va directo a la realeza, de la devoción de un rey a su amado pueblo. En este reino confuso, no vemos a un rey ataviado con poder y gloria, sino al crucificado “Rey de los Judíos” vestido así mismo en el sufrimiento de un mundo solo y triste. Su perdón y amor desgarrador a lo largo de su pasión es un ejemplo difícil seguir para las personas, y aun así Jesús nos da su vida y muerte como modelo. Y luego él nos dice que, junto con “el buen ladrón”, estaremos con él “en el Paraíso”. ¿Qué más podríamos pedir? Es oportuno que la encíclica del Papa Pío une esta fiesta real a la fiesta del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. Este rey que da su corazón a la humanidad en la fiesta de sacrificio de amor del Viernes Santo que da su corazón cada día a un mundo destrozado que todavía intenta descubrir quién es él. Instead of looking at the Ten Commandments as being restrictive and telling us what we can’t do, look at them as guides for living a joy-filled and peaceful life. Most of our problems arise when we put our own needs first or spend most of our time trying to acquire “things”. Try putting God first in all things instead. Ask Him how He wants you to use your gifts.

34th ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER St. Cyril will host its 34th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for the Homeless on Thanksgiving Day. Since 1986, St. Cyril has hosted this event for men, women and children from area homeless shelters. Year after year it has been made possible through the generous support of our parishioners.
Please bring non-perishable food donations, such as canned corn, string beans, dinner rolls, pies, cakes, sugar-free and regular cookies,
regular and diet soda, etc. to Room 121 on Wednesday, November 27 between 4PM and 9PM.
Bring cooked food donations such as casseroles, sliced cooked ham and turkey in non-returnable containers, to Room 121 on
Thursday, November 28 between 6AM and 9AM.
Come to volunteer. Volunteers are asked to bring a bag of non-perishable food items, which will be donated to the food bank at St. Joseph’s near Downtown.
