Monocot vs. Dicot
What is the difference?
Seeds
• Monocot- one cotyledon, never emerges above soil
• Dicot- two cotyledons, emerge above soil as two seed leaves
Roots
• Monocot- fibrous root system; looks like a mop
• Dicot- tap root system with small secondary roots
Stem Structure
• Monocot- scattered vascular bundles
• Dicot- vascular bundles form an outer ring
Flowers
• Monocot- petals in 3’s or 6
• Dicot- petals in 4 or 5, or multiples up to 10
Leaf Structure
• Monocot- parallel veins
• Dicot- netlike veins
