My Friends in the Lord Jesus, One year ends and another begins; so go the weeks and months. However there is one constant in the changing of months and years, and that is the Lord Jesus. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. This is what we proclaimed this past Sunday as we celebrated the last Sunday of the Church’s year, Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. The Feast of Christ the King celebrates Jesus Christ as the Lord of all. We prayed to the Father, “You anointed your Only Begotten Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ…as eternal Priest and King of all creation, so that, by offering himself on the altar of the Cross…he might accomplish the mysteries of human redemption…he might present to your majesty an eternal and universal kingdom, a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace.” We are called to share in the virtues of this Kingdom of God being established, by fostering holiness of life and justice, love and peace, by His grace in our lives. Today, this Sunday, the First Sunday of Advent, we begin the new year of Grace, 2018. We begin the new Church year as it ended, awaiting the second coming of the Lord and his Kingdom. On the Fourth Sunday of Advent we will shift focus to the first coming of the Lord, the celebration of Christmas. May Advent instill in us the virtue of Hope, as we await the coming of the Lord Jesus. We pray, “Grant your faithful, Almighty God, the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous deeds at his coming, so that they may be worthy to possess the heavenly Kingdom.” Fr. Ron

First Sunday of Advent
“Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time will come.” (Mark 13:33)
We all take things for granted. In particular, we take time for granted. Our lives are so busy, many of us are planning our time - our days, weeks, months, even years in advance. Remember, our time on earth is a gift. None of us knows how long we will be here. Start today and begin thanking God for each and every day. Take time in silence, every day and listen to what God is saying to you.

December 1, 2017 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
On December 9 and 10, our parishes will be conducting the appeal for the Retirement Fund for Religious, a national collection that benefits more than 32,000 elder-ly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. Our senior religious are a treasure. Their dedication and hard work laid the foundation for Catholic schools, hospitals, and numerous social service organizations. Many continue in volunteer ministry today. Their ongoing prayer and witness enrich our faith in countless ways. I am grateful for the service of religious, past and present. I hope you, too, recall a sister or brother who made a positive difference in your life.
Most elderly religious worked for years for small stipends, leaving a substantial gap in retirement savings. Unlike retired diocesan priests who are cared for by their diocese, religious sisters, brothers and priests are part of religious communities whose assets are separate from dioceses. With the ever-rising cost of health care and the increase in the number of those needing care, many religious communities now struggle to provide for their senior members. The Retirement Fund for Religious offers vital financial assistance to help meet day-to-day needs for prescription medications, nursing care, and more. Nationally, despite unparalleled generosity to the collection, the average annual cost of care for a senior religious continues to rise each year, including skilled care, which can range from $50,000 to more than $75,000 per year. Rising costs are compounded by the fact that more than 1 out of 3 members of religious communities is over the age of 80! The need is still very great.
I recognize that this is but one of numerous worthy causes seeking your support and I ask you to consider prayerfully what you can do to help. In thanksgiving for all that elder religious have done for us, whether individ-ually or as a community of faith, please “give to those who have given a lifetime” by donating to the Retirement Fund for Religious and by praying for God’s continued blessing on our elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests.
With prayerful best wishes, I remain
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. McManus Bishop of Worcester
Please remember in your prayers…
