Call Him
(Mark 10:46-52)
The anticipation and tension is high and rising. Jesus is going to Jerusalem. He has told his disciples what is
going to happen when he gets there, and he is going anyway. The image Mark paints for us is of Jesus
walking far enough ahead of the people that there is space between he and everyone else. Jesus is followed
at some distance by an amazed group of disciples. But remember this is a feast time. The roads were full of
other pilgrims headed up to Jericho and then on to Jerusalem. The ones who followed the disciples were
anxious, they were afraid.
Then Jesus turns and tells his disciples again what was to happen to him. This prompted James and John
(without Peter) to “do for us whatever we ask of you.” Jesus asked, “What do you want me to do for you?”
and they replied for one to sit at his right and one at his left in his glory. Jesus response was that they didn’t
know what they were asking, to which they countered, “We are able.” Jesus, then it seems, says fine, but I
can’t give you what you ask for, it is for God to give. The others heard this and Jesus reminded them again
that, “whoever would be great among you must be your servant.”
The crowd passes through Jericho and is described as a “great multitude”, no doubt carrying even more fear
and anxiety. And at the side of the road there is a blind beggar. But not just any blind beggar – we know his
name. He is the only person healed in Mark who is identified by name, and I believe this is no accident. He
identifies Jesus using the messianic language of “son of David.” Others who had identified Jesus as such were
told to be quiet, which is what the crowd tells him to do. But he would not be deterred and for a second
time he calls out. Think about all of the action, and fear, and teaching, and amazement in the gospel of
Mark. Then consider Jesus’ response to the cry, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” – Jesus stopped!
“Call him.”
Then Jesus asks Bartimaeus, “What do you want me to do for you?” The reply was simple and straightfor-
ward, “Master, let me receive my sight?” Jesus granted him his sight and said go your way. Bartimaeus’ way,
it turns out, was the same way Jesus was going – he followed Jesus.
If you had one request, one thing to ask that Jesus do for you, what would it be? Would it be to be known as
one who is close to Jesus or would it be simply to receive you sight. It is my prayer that I have the courage to
ask for sight – Lord Jesus, help me to see, and in seeing I will know which way to go.
Thank you for worshipping with us today!
Please introduce yourself by filling out an information sheet located in the maroon
binder at the pew ends. You may place that in the contribution plate as it passes. You are also welcome to include any prayer requests
