Formeasurementaccuracyuseflumesizestomatchactualflows.Sizingtonominalpipesizeisnotalwayscorrect.Optimumflowreadingsareob-tainedbyselectingaflumesizethathasflowratesbetweenmaximumandminimumdischargerates.
Typicallyoversizedflumesreducetheac-curacyoftheflowmeasurement.Whenthepipelinesizeislargerthantheflume,theapproachsection,constructedonsitebytheinstaller,onthepermanentflumemustsmooththeflowbeforeitreachesthepointofmeasurement.
GeneralFlumesshouldnotbeplacedatrightanglestoflowingstreamssuchasinturnoutsun-lesstheflowiseffectivelystraightenedanduniformlyredistributedbeforeitenterstheflume.Surgesandwavesofanyappreciablesizeshouldbeeliminatedandtheflowlinesshouldbeessentiallyparalleltotheflume’scenterline.Also,theflowattheflume’sen-tranceshouldbefreeofturbulence(visiblesurfaceboils).
AllflumeshaveextrudedFRPanglesthatareboltedontothetopflangestomaintaindimensionalintegrityduringshipmentandinstallation.AlthoughtheseanglescanberemovedAFTERtheinstallationprocessiscomplete,MJKrecommendsleavingtheanglesinplacetomaintaintheflume’sdimensionalintegrityshouldthegroutsink.
Palmer-Bowlus flumes grouted in placePermanenttypePalmer-Bowlusflumesaretypicallygroutedintoplacebetweentwosectionsofpipehavingthesamediameterastheflume.Inexistingpipelines,asectionofpipeequaltothelengthoftheflumeisremovedandreplacedwiththeflume.
Wheninstalingtheflume,theinvert(insidebottommostpoint)shouldbeusedasareference.Theinvertoftheflumemustbelevelinbothfronttobackandsidetosidedirections.Theparallelsidewallsmustbeplumb.Theflumeshouldbesetonasolidfoundationtopreventsettlingorheaving.FRPanchorclipsareprovidedforattachingwiretotheflumetopreventtheflumefromfloatingorshiftingduringstagedpouringofflowablegrout.
Internalbracingmustbeprovidedontheperpendicularsidewallsoftheflumebytheinstallertopreventanyunduestressordeformationduringbackfillingwithflowablegroutorothermaterials.Flowablegroutbackfillshouldbestagefilledpouredin�to6”deepincrements(lifts)withminimaluseofavibrator.ThefirstliftshouldbeSLOWLYpouredononesidesothatthegroutwillflowundertheflumetotheotherside,therebyhelpingtoeliminateanyvoidareasundertheraisedtrapezoidalfloorsection.Eachliftmustbeallowedtosetupbeforenextstageispoured.
Parshall flumes grouted in placeWheninstallingParshallflumes,thecrest(flooroftheconvergingsection)shouldbeusedasareference.
Thecrestoftheflumemustbelevelinbothfronttobackandsidetosidedirections.
Flumesshouldbesetonasolidfoundationtopreventsettlingorheaving.FRPanchorclipsareprovidedforattachingwirestotheflume.Thisaidsinpreventingtheflumefromfloatingorshiftingduringstagepouringofflowablegrout.
Wheninstallingflumes,internalbracingshouldbeprovidedbytheinstaller.
Thishelpstopreventanyunduestressordeformationduringbackfillingwithflowablegroutorothermaterials.Flowablegroutbackfillshouldbe“stage-poured”inappro-ximately6”deepincrements(“lifts”).Thefirst6”“lift”shouldbepouredSLOWLYononeside,Thisallowsthegrouttoflowundertheflumetotheoppositeside,bythathelpingtoeliminateanyvoidareasunderthefloorsection.Each“lift”mustbeallowedtosetupbeforethenext“lift”ispoured.
