HOW WE USE POINT CLOUDS
> Concept design will typically be completed with a relatively inaccurate model to firm up scope of project and obtain client approval.
> With client approval, a surveyor will be engaged to perform a laser scan of the site as required. Additional survey information will also be obtained such as topography to obtain site conditions.
> A process of then aligning the existing building elements to the point cloud takes place. This then allows us to correctly phase the project for demolition and new construction.
PRODUCTIVITY THROUGH DIGITAL COLLABORATIONLaser Scanning and Photogrammetry
HOW WE USE POINT CLOUDS
> The process that works for us is to align our concept model to the point cloud as required.
> Elements are also broken up at this stage to allow for demolition and construction phasing.
> This process works for us and our workflows but there are tools that can help automate the processing of point clouds into models for those looking for a more automated solution.
PRODUCTIVITY THROUGH DIGITAL COLLABORATIONLaser Scanning and Photogrammetry
WHY WE USE POINT CLOUDS
> Not every existing condition is always modelled so using the point cloud for coordination with existing elements is valuable.
> Existing hardwood purlins clashing with new pipework to roof plant is can easily be fixed during documentation to ensure no delays occur on site.
> Clash detection with point clouds is problematic, so visual inspection is required.
PRODUCTIVITY THROUGH DIGITAL COLLABORATIONLaser Scanning and Photogrammetry
WHY WE USE POINT CLOUDS
> Helps ensure complex interfaces with existing elements is working between multiple disciplines.

WHERE WE USE POINT CLOUDS
> Point clouds can be used at any stage of a project, from the beginning to firm up a design, during construction, or even at the end to help provide accurate As-Built documentation

HOW WE USE POINT CLOUDS IN WORKFLOW
> There is no set workflow for working with Point Clouds.> Different workflows work for different elements, designs
and stages of projects.> Find a workflow that works for you and look to innovate
and develop it over time.

WHY AND WHERE WE USE POINT CLOUDS IN PRE-COSTRUCTION
> During preconstruction 2d documentation and photos can be miss leading and lead to in efficient design and unclean scope.
> By early engagement of a laser scan varication of design and geometrical constraints. There for providing clear scope for the design intent.

Design intent to construction
HOW AND WHERE WE USE POINT CLOUDS DURING
COSTRUCTION
> During construction point clouds can used for construction management, verification of works, quantities and many more possibilities.
Verification of design intent
Construction management
> Scanning at different staged time along the construction phase can help ensure interfaces and design across different discipline are coordinated and provided less on site rectification works.

AS-BUILTS AND FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
HOW AND WHERE WE USE POINT CLOUDS IN POST CONSTRUCTION
> Post construction laser scanning can help to create accurate As-Built documentation and provide a basis of a FM and Asset Management models
From site to the Design office
WHY WE USE POINT CLOUDS
• Accurate Design and Documentation• Better coordination• Less delays in design• Less RFI’s• Less wastage• Less reification work• Saving in time, using Virtual design and
construct• Savings in time and money!!!

SURVEYING – How can a Surveyor Help?
Mark Mayers
> Establishment of project coordinate system and physical benchmarks
> Construction setout corresponding with project coordinate system
> Conventional data capture Cadastral boundary and lease survey Topography and ground surface Detail feature surveys Underground Service Location Dimensional Control (precision survey for fabrication QC) Monitoring Surveys
> Other data capture Aerial LIDAR and Photogrammetry 3D Laser Scanning, terrestrial and mobile GPR and underground service detection

What kind of services can your surveyor provide?
> Providing a clear and accurate scope often the first challenge Engage with surveyor and discuss objectives Your deliverable expectations, can your team work with point cloud
data? Yes anyone can use point data. What software? Do you want 3D CAD models too? Single as-built scan or progressive scans during construction? Surveyor can advise workflows and tools to extract value from data
> Costs impacted by: Site conditions, access, availability and complexity
> Specifications: Accuracy, Resolution, Full Colour, Areas of Interest, Coordinate System, file formats, etc.
> Sharing data with entire project team can multiply value of data and will maintain single source of information and spatial consistency.
> Free tools available for sharing scan information with all team membersPRODUCTIVITY THROUGH DIGITAL COLLABORATION
Laser Scanning and Photogrammetry
Think I want 3D laser scanning, how to ask for it?
> Surveyors asked to scan for as-built information & existing conditions
> Surveyors increasingly being asked to deliver CAD models now also “just give us a basic Revit model” Offshore modelling providers Quality conformance issues
> A need to aim for consistency in specifying scanning and as-built CAD modelling…. “retrospective BIM”?
> Working on guidelines for requesting scans and specifying deliverables
> Some documentation and standards exist• American Institute http://usibd.org• Need local guidelines• Work in progress

BEST PRACTICES> Share data will all parties> Develop consistency for specifying 3D laser scanning (apples & apples)> Establish a project coordinate system> Include details with project documentation> Insist same system used by all consultants and contractors> Require control documentation (benchmarks & coords) from surveyors
> Ask questions of the client and other consultants / subcontractors to ensure they get what they want
> Ask the client if they know what the subcontractors need> Consider the size of the scan (can it be used) – break up as required into
smaller files> Consider software compatibilities in terms of file formats and coordinate
system size – Ask questions of the recipient of the information to ensure you understand what they can make use of.
> Note – A more comprehensive best practice guide which will be available soon
