Livingston Winery St. Helena, Napa Valley, California RAC-US3 United States 1997 RAC – Christmas Carols – Vocal & Instrumental Selections: (17 tracks)

Perf: David AUERBACH Prod. Co: Cala Records CD: CAROLS IN THE CAVES

Cala 55004 Notes: In that these are nearly all religious Christmas carols, this album should not be included here, but because of the album title it

was decided to mention it. Also because anyone typing “cave music” into Google a few years ago would automatically come up with this CD, which can in no way be considered cave music. These songs were recorded in three different man-made wine cave cellars of northern California. David Auerbach is a self-taught musician who plays several rare and exotic stringed, wind and percussion instruments from the cultural traditions of several continents. On this album there are the “echoing sounds of dulcimers, psalteries, Celtic harps and other strings, haunting ethnic flutes and panpipes and percussion from delicate bells to booming drums, from his collection of hundred exotic world music instruments.” (Anon. 2013) Both photos of David Auerbach surrounded by his instruments and the wine barrels are by Rhonda Stewart.

The Cave Chapel Hill, North Carolina RAC-US4 United States 2003 RAC – Rock Folk – Vocal & Instrumental

Selections: (19 rock tracks)

Perf: THE BROWN MOUNTAIN LIGHTS Prod. Co: Bombay Records CD: LATE SHOW AT THE CAVE

Bombay ABR 003 Notes: This CD was named to a "Best of 2004" list in No Depression. None of the tracks on this album were inspired by bats or caves. “The Cave is located at 452 1/2 West Franklin St. in Chapel Hill. It's down a flight of steps next to the West End Wine Bar. The Cave actually looks kind of

like a cave – the ceiling is low, the lighting is dim, and the walls are coated with some sort of stucco

that is reminiscent of the inside of a cavern.” (Ânon. 2014)

The bandstand was right next to the bar and on the wall behind the band was a large canvas painting signed S. Murkin showing a prehistoric man painting a Papst Blue Ribbon bear can on a cave wall as an old man squats before him holding a burning lamp. Actually the cave painting scene here is a direct copy of the central portion of a famous illustration from a book on the Stone Age showing two prehistoric men painting on the cave wall: one doing pseudo-Rouffignac Cave mammoths and the other a pseudo-Lascaux Cave auroch both lit by two others holding oil lamps.

“The storied Chapel Hill haunt sits down an alley and under the ground on West Franklin Street. On this bright March afternoon, the sun doesn't penetrate the holes of the faux-rock ceiling that lines the 43-year-old music venue…. For many of his [Mouse Mock’s] years at the helm, The Cave served both ends quite well. Music-related programs like the game show Band Delirium and Live @ the Cave successfully utilized the space as both a venue and a recording room.” (Lawrence 2012) Ref: Anon. 2014, Review of The Cave, Chapel Hill, (No longer online), raleighdurham.about The Brown Mountain Lights, Bio, efolkmusic The Brown Mountain Lights, ipass

Selections: (8 garage rock pieces)

Perf: SKY SAXON & PURPLE ELECTRICITY Prod. Co: Voxx Records Rec. Co: Richie's Recording Service Rec. Date: March 7, 1986 LP: “PRIVATE PARTY” LIVE AT THE CAVERN CLUB

Water/ Voxx VXS 200.041 12” 33rpm

Notes: This album is billed as recorded “Live at The Cavern Club.” The name of this club was inspired by the world-famous, The Cavern, in Liverpool (see under United Kingdom – The Cavern). “The Cavern Club at 3419 Hollywood Boulevard was a small club run by Greg Shaw of Bomp Records, and was the scene of a mod-psych 1960s revival in LA at the time. Sky Saxon was infamous for asking every band who happened to be playing if he could get onstage with them; most obliged, even when the novelty wore off and Sky had become an irritant. Some versions of the story mention that the show preserved on Private Party was concocted especially to appease Sky and get his eagerness to jump onstage out of his system.” (Anon. 2018) Voxx Records was founded in 1979 as a subsidiary of Bomp Records by owner Greg Shaw. Incidentally, roughly ten blocks east of 3419 Hollywood Boulevard is a venue called The Cavern Club Theater, noted for follies and drag shows, located at 1920 Hyperion Avenue, in the basement of the Casita del Campo, a Mexican restaurant in Silverlake, Los Angeles. Perf: THE CARVIN JONES BAND Prod. Co: Tee Records CD: LIVE AT JOE’S GROTTO

Tee TR-69742 Notes: Carvin Jones “by age 19 had moved to Arizona to start his music career. In January 2001, Guitarist Magazine named Carvin Jones ‘one of the top 50 blues guitarists of all time!’ " This nightclub in Phoenix was established in 1994 and is located at 13825 N. 32nd St at 32nd Street and E. Thunderbird Rd in Phoenix. Every Friday they still have rock tribute and cover bands starting at 9 PM. “In 1994, the venue was established by musician Joe Grotto after he won $75,000 in Las Vegas and invested it in the club. Along with the help of some friends, he has made it a favorite for even big-name hard rock bands to play when they come through town.” (Wise 2017)

Page 5: RECORDINGS IN ARTIFICIAL CAVES - caveinspiredmusic.comcaveinspiredmusic.com/rubriques/14_recordings_in...RAC – Jazz – Instrumental Selections: (10 Jazz pieces) Perf: Kid ORY &

“Joe Grotto (yes, his real name) has provided a North Phoenix haven for local bands for more than a decade now with his bar and live music venue. Be they fire-breathing death metal artists, long-haired screamo types, costumed tribute acts, or just plain old hard rockers, Joe will always offer space on his stage.” (Anon. 2018) So one could argue that this venue does not have a cave name because it was named after the owner. But, no, Joe is in the possessive, it’s the Grotto owned by Joe. Ref: Anon. 2018, Joe’s Grotto, Phoenix New Times, phoenixnewtimes

Selections: (10 Song & Comedy Cuts)

Perf: TOM & GLENN Prod. Co: DU-OK Records; Columbus, OH LP: TOM AND GLENN AT THE KNAVES CAVE DU-OK 90326 GA 12” 33rpm (mono) Notes: This is a rare private pressing LP of a comedy duo’s singing and comedy performance in this Columbus, Ohio nightclub. The liner notes said – “This record was made to bring you some of their (Tom and Glenn) more requested songs and comedy routines.” There were two different picture covers for this album indicating that it had a repressing and probably sold pretty well locally. Notes: Quintron frequently performed with his wife, fellow musician and puppeteer, Panacea Pussycat (also known as Miss Pussycat), co-founder of the 9th Ward's now defunct Pussycat Caverns. (Anon. 2018)

Before that “Rolston took the opportunity to start a one-man band. He dubbed his new project Quintron, after the name of the company where his dad was employed as an electrical engineer. He recorded his first album, I.F. 001-011, a foray into the sounds of Rolston's homemade percussion, for Ypsilanti, Michigan's Bulb Records. One of the stops he made was at Pussycat Caverns, which was located in an old theater in New Orleans' Ninth Ward District. The venue was operated by Panacea Theriac (aka Miss Pussycat), with whom Rolston became an instantaneous friend and lover… his second full-length album, The Amazing Spellcaster, which was released on Bulb a month prior to the closing of Pussycat Caverns in March of 1996. [This refers to

the 1996 Rhinestone reissue CD] … Rolston and Theriac started their own label, Rhinestone Records, to release their output.” (Howell 2018) Their very cave-oriented contact page is shown here. On this recording he plays a Gulbranson organ, a Disco Light Machine, and water bottles with back up by Panacea Pussycat on drums. “The music is all organ instrumentals, each one designed to evoke a particular mood - "festive", "crazy", "ominous", etc... It’s a concept record and doesn't really have any of the rockin dance party stuff that his newer records are know (sic) for, but it is interesting nonetheless and good for a dinner party.” (Anon. n.d.) Quintron also recorded two bizarre cave rock pieces, “Cave Formation,” and “Caveman 5000.” (See under Rock Music – Techno & Garage), so it is possible that these titles here are related in some way to this cavern dance nightclub. _____________________________________________________ Tarpaper Cave Rosendale, New York RAC-US9 United States 1990 RAC – Contemporary – Avant-Garde – Experimental –

Instrumental & Vocal Selections: (7 Contemporary Music Pieces)

Perf: DEEP LISTENING BAND Prod. Co: Deep Listening Publications, Kingston, NY Rec. Eng: Bob Bielecki & Connie Kieltzka CD: TROGLODYTE’S DELIGHT What Next? WN 03 Notes: This entire album was recorded in Tarpaper Cave, one of the underground quarries at the Rosendale Mine, southwest of Kingston, Ulster County, New York (see below). This was a special underground series of sessions, which followed a concert in the cave. Stuart Dempster, who plays trombone and didgeridoo, recalls Tarpaper Cave as “an old limestone quarry near Rosendale, New York that had lovely dripping water sounds and Valhalla-like mists.” “Performed in the Tarpaper Caves of Rosendale New York, a mere half hour from the Deep Listening Institute headquarters in Kingston New York,

Page 7: RECORDINGS IN ARTIFICIAL CAVES - caveinspiredmusic.comcaveinspiredmusic.com/rubriques/14_recordings_in...RAC – Jazz – Instrumental Selections: (10 Jazz pieces) Perf: Kid ORY &

these caves are also, like the cistern, abandoned by their original inception. A prime source of natural cement, they were dug out prior to the 1900s, its materials used in construction of national landmarks such as the Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty two hours south in New York City, as well as for the nation’s Capital building in Washington, DC. Limestone being the primary mineral, the walls of these caves are hard and dense, and its tunnels varied and winding yielding an abundance of varieties of echo and reverberation that no electronic effect, digital or other, could compete with.” (Tinker 2011) It is very likely that the Tarpaper Cave is just another name for a section of the Widow Jane Mine at Kingston (see just below).

2000 FruitGum Corp. FCCD 2302049797 Notes: This entire album was recorded in the Widow Jane Mine (also known as the Rosendale Mine) southwest of Kingston, Ulster County, New York, so the word, "caves," is a common misnomer used here in referring to made-made mines. This limestone mine "yielded lime used for cement that build New York

City in the 1800s, and was then used to grow mushrooms from the 1930s to the 1960s. It is the post and cavern type of mine, and the part that isn't in water is now used occasionally for concerts." (Liner notes) “Today the Widow Jane Mine is open to the public to explore, part of the property is owned by the Century Historical District on the grounds of the Snyder family estate, the original owners and operators of the mine. The District hosts a wide range of events and performances at the mine, including art exhibits, dance, drum circles, and the annual Subterranean Poetry Festival (28 years running). In addition to the many live performances, musicians have also used the mine as an underground recording studio, taking advantage of the crazy-good acoustics.” (Anon. 2018)

NOT RECORDED IN ARTIFICIAL CAVES

These entries are albums that were recorded at sites that are named “cave” or “grotto,” but the recordings were not made in the actual artificial cave, they were made elsewhere, somewhere on the site.

The Grotto Portland, Oregon RAC-US11 United States ca.1970s RAC – Religious – Classical – Organ – Instrumental

Selections: (9 religious pieces)

Perf: Bob BECK Prod. Co: Productions Beck 1. LP: THE GROTTO ORGANS IN REVERIE Beck 38965 12” 33rpm 2. LP: THE GROTTO ORGANS IN REVERIE Rex REX BB-102 12” 33rpm Notes: This is a rare LP of religious organ music. This music was performed in the Grotto’s 600-seat indoor chapel known for its acoustics. The Grotto is a Catholic shrine and botanical garden complex, called the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, consisting of a chapel, gardens, and outdoor shrine, and conference center. The site was used as a quarry by the Union Pacific Railroad from the late 1800's until it was purchased by Father Ambrose Mayer in 1923. The basalt cliff here is 110 feet high and consists of Boring lava, an olivine basalt.

“The Grotto is approximately 30 feet wide, 30 feet deep and almost 50 feet high. It was carved out of the face of the cliff in 1923. Fr. Ambrose Mayer, founder of The Grotto, placed a replica of Michelangelo’s Pietà in the cave in 1946.” (Anon. n.d.) (14 Tks) Notes: This is a private pressing of a live recording of religious music. The Christmas Festival of Lights is an annual celebration held on the grounds of The Grotto and billed as the largest Christmas choral festival in the world with over 150 choral performances. Michael Harrison plays a Christmas medley of piano melodies that runs for 51:32. This music was probably performed in the Grotto’s 600-seat indoor chapel known for its acoustics.
