from the office of The President…..Dean Hayes
Winter hit Round 10 this week.
I was greeted at Zwar Reserve with a morning tem-
perature of 1 degree and ice on the grass.
We hosted 5 games today and was glad the sun
came out to thaw out ground.
The Under 12 & Under 14’s both had bye’s this week
and Zwar had the Under 10, 11, 13, 15 and Colts 2.
It was an early start for the Under 10’s @ 8.30am in the
morning against Bulleen Templestowe. After a strong
start the boys were challenged and came home
with a good win.
The Under 11’s played against Ivanhoe and due to a
quick start by Ivanhoe, the team work hard for the
remainder of the game but unfortunately fell short.
The Under 13’s played a very talented Whitehorse
Colts, but I will know the team will bounce back.
The Under 15’s were unable to take advantage of
the breeze in the final quarter but just feel short by 3
points. Another narrow margin but I know one will go
your way soon.
The Colts 4 did not have their best day against Mac-
leod compared to their efforts last week. Keep work-
ing at it boys and a victory will come.
The Tackers were at Brunswick this week and are
continuing their improvement each week.
The Colts 1 were down this week against Macleod,
but I they can return to better form.
Dinner Dance
The Dinner Dance tickets are now on sale, and it’s a
great time for adults to get together away from foot-
ball.
We are back to the Regal ballroom and with food,
drinks & entertainment provided, don’t miss out on a
great night.

Match Report:
A frigid morning greeted our tackers as we travelled to Gillon Oval, Brunswick. The tackers
observed ‘there was something wrong with their grass, it’s hard and white!’ on closer inspec-
tion it was cold too and then came the realisation we’d had a frost overnight.
Captains for the day Patrick Bubbers and first gamer Sam Auger lead the team out into the
cold morning (2.5 degrees) to tackle our opponents Brunswick W.
The Bullants showed great defence early and plenty of run in the midfield resulting in four
goals for the quarter. Kalan Dani slotted through his first career goal for the Bullants and
Samual Amad was a class above kicking 3.
The quarter time address started with encouragement for a good performance and then
some mind games. Coach Scott ‘You’re only jogging, I need you to run! Pretend we are 10
goals down.’
Ayden Clark came off the bench in the second term and put on a goal kicking clinic slot-
ting 3 goals in the term. First gamer Sam Auger wasted no time and kicked his first goal on
debut. The highlights for the quarter:
· An end to end goal that showed real teamwork and clean possessions. Patrick
Di Bernardino kicked out from the backline to Archie Spark who collected the ball
after a good second effort and passed to Samual Amad who passed to Ayden
Clark who bounced, took a run and kicked truly.
· In defence was a Patrick Di Bernadino one handed reach for the ball that
saved a certain score.
· In the midfield Callum O’Neill took a strong pack mark.
By half time it was evident we were playing a young team with several first gamers. At the
start of the season our tackers looked inexperienced and played the same way. The devel-
opment of the Bullants game over the season was impressive to watch and each player
should be congratulated on their improvements. Coach Scott encouraged the team but
warned against complacency. Keep going for your marks, share the ball around, I want to
see unselfish play.
The third term saw more strong team play and goals from Samual and Ayden. Brunswick
managed to get on the scoreboard with a bouncing goal that was greeted with rapture
from the players and fans. We all know how that feels and were pleased for Brunswick. Low-
light of the quarter was Tom Maddison taking a heavy knock to the knee and playing no
further role in the game.
The final quarter highlight was hard work by Marianne Magno in the centre that started a
passage of play that resulted in another major. By the time the final siren sounded the ‘Little
Ants’ had put on a score the Don would be proud of. We sang the team song for the first
time at an away game and celebrated our third major success of the season.
Players remember that Brunswick played just like we did a mere 10 weeks ago. Through
practice, good coaching and hard work you have all improved out of sight. Well done
Tackers!!

Match Report
A character-defining final quarter pushed Preston to a thrilling come-from-
behind win against Bulleen Templestowe at H.P. Zwar Park on a cold Sunday
morning, with Preston overcoming an eight-point deficit at three-quarter-time
to prevail and win by eight points.
It had seemed an unlikely win for much of the match. While Preston got off to a
great start kicking the first three goals of the match through Jack, Allister, and
Lewis, Bulleen Templestowe soon asserted control. In what would become a
strong display at the centre bounce, Bulleen Templestowe started to win the
centre clearances and kicked the next two goals of the match through quick
ball movement.
Preston found it hard to adjust in the second quarter as Bulleen Templestowe
continued its dominance at the centre square. Whilst the Preston defenders
were under siege, the quick ball use ensured Bulleen Templestowe were able to
repeatedly find targets in its forward line, piling on another five goals to one be-
fore half-time.
Up until this point, it had seemed that Preston was struggling to negate Bulleen
Templestowe’s damaging ruck work. But somehow, Preston started to claw the
lead back with consecutive forays forward. Jack, who had toiled all day,
marked strongly inside 50, only for his kick to be intercepted before the goal
line. Declan provided a forward option on multiple occasions, taking strong
marks throughout the quarter. While he, too, had his shots intercepted, Declan
was finally rewarded for his efforts, kicking a goal to bring the margin down to
eight points at three-quarter-time.
Having reduced the deficit, Preston headed into the fourth quarter with its third-
quarter momentum. The tables had most definitely turned, and Preston was
playing with an intensity and forward pressure that was lacking in the first-half.
When Remy marked in the goal square and kicked truly, the margin was down
to one point. Sensing the match was within their grasp, every Preston player
seemed to rise to the occasion. Phoenix and Oscar ran hard and tackled hard-
er.
Harry and Elijah also marked the ball inside 50, but it was fitting that Declan not
only kicked a behind to finally put Preston in front, but also marked and goaled
to place the result beyond
doubt, Preston victors by eight points. GO PRESTON BULLANTS!

Match Report Fresh and frosty were the conditions that greeted us Sunday at Zwar.
A determined Ivanhoe also greeted us as they burst out of the blocks with 3 quick goals in the
first quarter. It was the slowest start of the season and a good reality check for our Bullant
boys not to underestimate any opponent in our division.
The midfield was led by Captain Alex were actually matching it with the opposition but once
Ivanhoe pushed forward we were caught out of position. To the boys credit though, they re-
grouped and started to stop Ivanhoe's attack. This is a great sign of their development this
year and an indication of how strong this Bullant team is. Yianni was having a breakout game
gathering a lot of the ball and forcing it forward. He had great support from Phoenix who was
also winning a lot of the ball. Toby was a late injury withdrawal and Felix stepped in adding his
commitment to the contest. Jack Reed continues to improve with each game, but down
back Jack B was the shining light defending and clearing the ball. The same can be said of
Sammy and Jordan, both who had very good games again. Jet is another who did
everything he could to stop Ivanhoe with some good run and carry. He was also very vocal in
talking with defenders as they walked off for the half-time break. This is also an excellent
development to hear the boys communicating on what they can do to improve in the
match.
As the second half began, the momentum of the game had changed and now it was the
Bullants turn to attack. Xavier did well to get the ball forward and Shaharyar was running
hard. Henry was getting involved in the match as was Jack Sparrow. Patrick who has really
picked up his game was a solid contributor as was Max D. Phoenix grabbed a good mark
down forward, saw that Jack Sparrow was open and got the kick to him. On a hard angle he
had a shot for goal where it fell short and was crumbed by Yianni who slotted it through for his
first goal of the season. Ivanhoe responded strongly, and despite the crushing tackles from
Lachlan who is consistently good with his performances, they managed to score another
goal.
Once a team grabs a handy lead at the start, it is always tough to respond, but as the last
quarter began, the Bullants showed a desire to fight back. Nicholas lifted his defensive game,
as did Captain Max LT, and the ball was pushed back to put the pressure on Ivanhoe. Serge
was strong down forward, as was Christian and Maxim. Ty and Ollie were starting to create
the opportunities. But it was James who broke through taking a strong mark and finished it off
with his first well deserved goal of the season. With Yianni and James' first goals of the season,
that brings our number of goal scorers to twenty. This is a fantastic achievement that
highlights the efforts of everyone.
As Ivanhoe's coach said, if there was going to be a 5th quarter, they were going to be in
trouble, but there are no if's this time...The Bullants will have their chance to turn the result
around when we face Ivanhoe again in a couple of weeks. Yianni was a well-deserved
winner of their medal for effort.
Thanks to all our volunteers and our team managers!

Whitehorse Colts M 8 10 58
Match Report
This is the flattest the team has played this year. Not as flat as they have been.
(Remember, it was a lot tougher going last season, after having endured ten losses in a
row). But flat for sure. And is it any wonder? The team has done a remarkable job to
stay focussed and it was always likely that at some point over the last couple of week
they were going to lose that focus. This is the game it happened. And that is the main
lesson the team should take from Round 10. It was an anomaly.
That’s not to say that Whitehorse Colts aren’t a good team. They are. But they aren’t a
10 goal better side than the Bullants. In real terms both teams match up pretty well.
Whitehorse have more consolidated structure, Bullants have a bigger spread of skilled
players. Team structure builds confidence. Last Sunday Whitehorse won because they
played team structured footy and their confidence grew as the game went on. The
Bullants started out flat,
did not maintain coach directed structures, and became even flatter as the game
went on. Consider this. Whitehorse could only beat Balwyn by 21 points. The Bullants
(during this period of unsettled confusion) playing about their best-ever team structured
game beat the same side by 55 points. The last time Bullants played Whitehorse the Bul-
lants were in the lead at three quarter time. That game is a better comparison of the
two sides. There were three scoring shots difference then. Also, as this observer has
mentioned before, the team has to develop a stronger forward line. Key injuries (to Leo
and Chilli) make that a bit harder but the build can’t wait or only operate with a team
at full strength. Players like Charbel and Daniel can bolster the forward structure.
At this point in the season, a team as skilled as the Bullants should expect a minimum of
10 shots on goal per game. We certainly have goal kickers. What the forward line struc-
ture requires is players bringing the ball forward, either from the mid-field or flanks, to
spot up targets. When this happens we have a lot of shots on goal, have 6 or more goal
scorers and win.
The game was not without its highlights. James S, playing his 100th game, held his head
up (very) high in this losing game. The second quarter was the Bullants to win (plenty of
the ball) but they couldn’t finish off some impressive forward surges. Alex took a ripper
of a juggling mark. Likewise in the third, the effort was there but not the reward. James
S, Zac, Dylan and Alex all impressed. Ben was working overtime in the last lines. It was,
as they say, a bad day at the office. That’s all. Turn the page and move on. If you take
anything from this game, take this. Structure and teamwork matter. Finally, welcome
Ted, who played his first game with the U13s, to the team.

Match Report
On Sunday the under 15’s played Ivanhoe B at Zwar Reserve. An anomaly of
the draw meant this was the third of four times that we would play them this
year. After a close loss and a draw this match had the hallmarks of what
would be a stellar contest.
Before the match Louie advised the boys ‘not to give up’, ‘ play four quarters
of consistent footy’, and to’ give the ball to players in the best position.’
Many of the boys have been with the Bullants for a few years now and mile-
stones are becoming more frequent. This week Thomas played his 50th game.
Tom has been one of our big improvers over the last couple of years and he
plays a very important role in our team.
With Ivanhoe kicking with a stiff breeze much of the first quarter was spent in
their attacking zone. Our defence lead by Ryan and Stevo held up really well
holding them to just two goals for the quarter. Late in the term Liam found
space running from half back to half forward. He ran on to a loose ball and
delivered a great pass to Rob. After taking a nice overhead mark Rob went
back and kicked our first goal.
In the second quarter a great chain of handballs for Daniel Diab, Matt, Tyson
and Christian resulted in a running goal for Christian. This type of fluent quick
ball movement always pays dividends. During a great second quarter Daniel
Diab was again amongst it when he marked and kicked truly to put the Bul-
lants in front just before half time.
The Bullants were again against the wind in the third term. With limited oppor-
tunities up forward Jackson found a way through the congestion and kicked a
crucial goal to keep the Bullants in the game.
At the start of the last quarter we were just under three goals down. We were
finding it difficult dealing with Ivanhoe’s flood in our forward line. Matt gave us
a glimmer of hope after a great snap from the pocket. With minutes to go
Matthew again goaled to put the Bullants only four points down. It was a
great effort and an exciting climax to the game.
When the siren rang we were three points amiss. The game against Ivanhoe
was again a close one, but we’re learning something new each week.

Aidan Baynes and Liam Mac were fantastic while Benny Augustus

Round 10 saw us at Zwar Park against Macleod.
After losing by 2 points the week before, we were hoping that good form and over-
all team effort would continue.
Unfortunately we just couldn't match Macleod; they played four quarters of footy
and had winners all over the ground.
Well done to John who played his 50th match for the Bullants.
