Saints of the Week and Scripture
GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
The Prince of Peace wants to set the world on fire? This Sunday's Gospel can sound more intense than what we
may be accustomed to. It's a passage of contradictions. Jesus so clearly prays for unity, yet here he speaks of
division. Why would our God who comes as an offering of love speak so frankly about causing relationships to be
torn apart?
The sobering truth is that Jesus is divisive. We see this throughout the Gospels, as the Pharisees critique him, the
Romans condemn him, and not everyone in the crowd is enthusiastic about his words. Jesus has not come for the
purpose of dividing, but what he does is so radical that it upends the status quo. And it doesn't end with his
preaching and miracles! "There is a baptism with which I must be baptized." Jesus isn't talking about his baptism
at the Jordan River, which has already occurred, but the passing through the waters of death on the Cross and rising again to new
life in the resurrection. This is divisive stuff! Christ's spiritual fire turned the "fathers" - the Jewish people and Pharisees - against the
"sons" - the common people. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants to be set on fire with the desire
to love others. Some prefer to put on a warm sweater and curl up in front of the TV.
In living and loving as Jesus did, we, too, might ruffle some feathers. In disciplining our teenage child for sneaking out, we may cause
some division (temporarily, we hope!). In standing up to gossip and the spread of cruel rumors in our workplace, we might cause
division. In emphasizing the dignity of both the desperate mother and the unborn child, we might cause division. Not everyone
wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants the Gospel we are invited to live. But that's no excuse not to live it.
Memorial of Saint Bernard, Abbot & Doctor of the Church
Saint Bernard was born into a noble family in 1090 at Fontaines in eastern France. Saint Bernard studied literature and sacred scripture with the canons at Châtillon-sur-Seine. When he was 23, he and 30 young nobles entered the monastery of Cîteaux, the monastery from which sprang the Cistercian Order. Three years later he was sent to found the monastery of Clairvaux. Saint Bernard became very influential. He served as secretary to the Synod of Troyes (1128), supported Innocent II in his struggle with a rival papal claimant, and urged the condemnations of teachings of Abelard at the Council of Sens (1140) and of Gilbert de la Porrée at Reims (1148). His monastery at
Clarivaux attracted many new members; from it monks were sent to Portugal, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Sweden, England, and Ireland to establish new Cistercian communities. He was a brilliant writer, who knew the Bible extremely well. He had a great devotion to Mary. Bernard was canonized in 1174 by Pope Alexander III and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1830 by Pope Pius VIII.
Memorial of Saint Pius X, Pope
Saint Pius X was born to a peasant family in 1835 in northern Italy. At 23, he was ordained and became a chaplain. Regular promotions followed: in 1875, he became episcopal chancellor of Treviso and spiritual director of the diocesan seminary; in 1884, Bishop of Mantua; and, in 1893, Patriarch of Venice. When he was elected pope in 1903, he adopted the motto, ‘Instaurare omnia in Christo’ or ‘To renew all things in Christ.’ His papacy achieved many things: a restructuring of the Roman Curia, revised guidelines for priestly formation, work toward a revision of
the Code of Canon Law, a catechism, liturgical reforms, encouragement of frequent communion, and the establishment of Biblical Institute in Rome. Saint Pius X was intransigent in shunning “modernist” theology and biblical scholarship, and resisted, not always with diplomatic finesse, efforts by nations to interfere in the life of the Church. He was canonized in 1954 by Pope Pius XII.
The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Although this feast was introduced only in recent times, Mary is depicted in Christian art as a queen already in the
sixth century. In two well-known twelfth-century hymns, Mary is saluted: “Hail, O Queen, mother of mercy” and
“Hail, Queen of the heavens.” The Christian imagination sees Mary assumed into the royal court of heaven. Her
Son joyously greets her. She is welcomed by choirs of angels and a crowd of saints. In filial love Christ crowns Our Lady as Queen of
Heaven and Earth. Through her faith and charity, she became the Mother of the Savior (Luke 2). She, the New Eve, crushes the head
of the serpent (Gen 3:15). On her head is a crown of twelve stars (Rev12:1), and from this exalted position, Our Heavenly Mother aids
the Church by her prayers of love and mercy.
Feast of Saint Bartholomew, Apostle
Today marks the Feast of Saint Bartholomew, Apostle. St. Bartholomew, whose name means ‘son of Talmay,’ is
listed as one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. He is mentioned sixth in the Gospel’s of Saints Matthew, Mark, and Luke
and seventh in Acts. In Saints John’s Gospel, Nathanael is listed where Saint Bartholomew’s name is in other three
lists. Therefore, as there is no central narrative about Saint Bartholomew; some scholars believe he may be
Nathanael. Nathanael shows a prescient faith, when he opens his heart and professes that Jesus is the Son of
God. As Benedict XVI stated, by his profession Nathanael took, “…an important first step on the journey… to
Jesus.” Also, in Nathanael’s proclamation, we hear a reference to the hypostatic union: Jesus’ divinity as the Son of God and Jesus’
humanity as the King of Israel. We are reminded to honor both of these aspects of Christ as we grow in relationship with Him.

In Our Prayers
If we are all meant to be united in Christ, why is there so much division in the Church? Answer: Each Sunday, we profess that we believe in
"one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church." The Church is
indeed one because her source is the Trinity, and she is
founded by Christ. The Church also exists in the fallen world and is
made up of fallen people. Sometimes, there are tensions over what
we believe as Catholics. Who is Jesus really? Are we affected by
original sin? How do our traditional sexual ethics play out amidst
medical and technological developments? Doctrinal disagreements
are rarely just about ideas... they occur within a context.
Tensions are influenced by various social and political factors of the
time period. For example, Martin Luther's attempts at reform gained
followers, in part, as a reaction against poor moral practices within
the Catholic Church. When the schism between the Eastern Ortho-
dox Church and the Catholic Church occurred in 1028, tensions be-
tween the two culturally different regions had been brewing for centu-
ries.
Division still occurs within the bounds of the Church today. Often-
times, this is about pastoral or practical matters. These questions
can vary. Should we incorporate Latin back into the liturgy? What is
the best way to reach the youth in our parish? These may not be
articles of faith, but people have strong opinions about what ought to
be done. We can remember the prayer of Christ - "that all might be
one" - and do what we can to grow in understanding and respectful
dialogue.
54 DAYS that will SHAKE the country and the world!
YOU can be a part of it right here at Saint Peter.
A special 54 days Novena of Rosaries for Our Country,
starting on August 15,
The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary Our Mother and ending on October 7th, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Three Novenas of Petition and three Nove-nas of Thanksgiving.
“When people say the Rosary together, it is far more formidable to the devil, than one said privately. Because in this public prayer, it is an army that is attacking him. He can often overcome the prayer of an individual, but if this prayer is joined to other Christians, the devil has much more trouble in getting the best of it.” - St Louis de Montfort. This Novena is for the healing and protection of our country. For more information google "54 day Novena for our nation 2019". You can sign up for daily readings/prayers. Please join in to help our country.
LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK
Our baptismal rite instructs the parents and godparents of the newly baptized children, "May they keep the flame of faith alive in their hearts." Faith has often been associated with fire. While fire can be useful and welcomed as a source of light and warmth, it can also be devastating and destructive. The
Gospel is very much like this. On the one hand, Jesus speaks of healing, liberty, mercy, and forgiveness. On the other, he challenges the secular mindset and ideology, risks opposition, and pushes people out of their comfort zones. We are more attracted to things that make us feel better about ourselves. Equipped with the flame of faith, are we willing to see the bigger picture and risk popularity and self-preservation in favor of the kingdom of God?
A Senior's Prayer
Good and gracious God, I thank you for the gift of life. You have
given me so many good things over its course: health of mind and
body, friends and family, strengths and weaknesses, sorrows and
joys. You have ordained that seasons change and time passes.
Help me to surrender graciously to the changing circumstances of
my life. Help me to accept my weaknesses, and to see them as
opportunities for others to show the love of Jesus. Make me strong
in Your spirit, that I may love You all the days of my life. Amen.

True Prosperity "Sell your possessions and give.... For where
your treasure is, there your heart will also be."
Luke 12:33-34
In Luke 12:16-21, Jesus told a story about a rich
farmer who hoarded his grain, accumulating his wealth for his own
pleasure. This is the world's way to handle money. However,
Jesus pointed out that the formula for true blessing is very different,
and it's summed up with one word--- GIVE.
This may not make much sense. How can a person gain by giving
away what he or she has? But in the Lord's eyes giving is the key
to true prosperity. This is because giving declares our dependence
upon God as our only true Source. The person who greedily
hoards wealth almost always sees his stockpile as his security.
The open-handed person must instead trust in the Lord.
Giving is also the key to blessing because being generous reflects
God's character. Our heavenly Father is lavish toward us--- always
providing what we truly need, even at great cost to Himself
(Romans 8:32). When we give of our time, money, or love, we are
providing a living example of His wonderful love to others. So give.
Show that Christ is your true treasure. Minister to others lavishly.
And trust that God will provide you with true prosperity (Luke
6:38).
"Jesus, help me to be generous so others will believe in You.
Amen. "
