Australia’s heritageAUSTRALIA’S heritage is everything thatcontributes to this country’s identity. It’swhat gives us understanding and helpsconveys the stories of our development asa nation.It captures where we’ve come from,where we are now and gives context towhere we are headed as a community.Australia’s heritage includes our spiritand ingenuity, historic buildings and plac-es, values, traditions, events and our un-ique, living landscapes.Its role is to bring people together,create community identity and a sense ofpride. It is vital to preserve and protect thespecial places, our rich indigenous herit-age, the diverse historic sites and thestories that together reflect our growth asa nation.

The listOUR heritage is managed by various levelsof government and peak bodies that ident-ify and list places for their heritage values.The heritage significance of an itemincludes all the things that make it specialto past, present and future generations.These may be its historic origins and sub-sequent development, its association withparticular people or events, its visual ortownscape qualities, its construction orother technical qualities, a religious orsymbolic role and archaeological researchpotential. There are more than 80 placeson the National Heritage List that areprotected through the EnvironmentProtection and Biodiversity Con-servation Act 1999. Includedin this list are Austra-

lia’s 17 World Heritage places: TheGreat Barrier Reef; Kakadu NationalPark; Willandra Lakes; TasmanianWilderness; Lord Howe Island Group;Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park; Cen-tral Eastern Rainforest Reserves; TheWet Tropics of Queensland; Shark Bay;Fraser Island; Australian fossil mam-mal sites; Macquarie Island; the Grea-ter Blue Mountains area; PurnululuNational Park; the Royal ExhibitionBuilding and the surrounding CarltonGardens; The Sydney Opera House.

Our indigenous heritageAUSTRALIA has been the home ofAboriginal people for close to 50,000years and the evidence of their pre-sence is everywhere in the landscape.Places of significance include ceremo-nial sites, camping places, sacred land-

scapes, burial andmassacre sites,historic reserves andartworks.

A Titanic voyageA MEMORIAL cruise on its way to theNorth Atlantic site where the Titanic hitan iceberg and sank 100 years ago,battled bad weather on its route and amedical emergency to get to the exactspot the disaster occurred.The commemorations of thereputedly unsinkable ship’s doomedvoyage were in remembrance of all thelives lost when the ship sank.The memorial cruise aboard the MSBalmoral retraced the ill-fated route ofthe Titanic. It set sail fromSouthampton in southern England,carrying 1309 passengers, includingrelatives of some of the more than 1500Titanic passengers who died. The cruiserecreated the experience onboard theTitanic with many passengers dressedin period costumes for the journey, aswell as crew members and stewards.Passengers also ate meals from theTitanic’s menu, while a live band playedmusic of the era.Like the Titanic, it wasn’t all smoothsailing.

A Quick RunAUSTRALIA’S richest footrace, theannual Stawell Gift, was run innorth-west Victoria over the Easterweekend. Run on grass over 120metres, the race’s competitors arehandicapped according to their form.Following in his grandfather’sfootsteps as a Stawell Gift finalist, 20year-old business sports managementstudent Matthew Wiltshire fromBallarat, running from a mark of eightmetres, won an action-packed final.
