children when we undertake our school visits during Stamp Collecting Month each October. Mythical Creatures, through the superb illustrations of Alan Pocock, comprise the characters mermaid, troll, fairy, griffi n, unicorn, and of course, dragon. Included in the range is a special 3D pack containing a minisheet designed by applying a number of different layers giving it the 3D effect. The pack includes a pair of 3D glasses needed to view the effect. This is just one of the wide range of products included in this issue, some of which would be ideal to give as a gift.
In October we release a single stamp to mark CHOGM 2011. This is the third time the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting has been held in Australia, with previous meetings being held in Melbourne (1981) and Coolum (2002). HRH Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip will attend the event.
Finally don’t forget to catch up with the complete set of Bush Babies postal and numismatic covers, with another due to be released later this year to complete the set.
Happy Collecting

Dear Collectors
In this edition of the Stamp Bulletin you will fi nd some exciting products across two of the main stamp issues to be released in this half of the year, but more about that later. Let’s begin with a look at the Colours of Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The stamps are presented in a magnifi cent sheet of 20 and show the depth of colour in the plant and marine life found in the area. The sheet would look wonderful framed up and ready to take pride of place on any wall.
Moving further into September, and the beginnings of a return to warmer weather in our southern states, we see the release of a stamp issue aligned with some much loved outside activity! For many, golf is a favourite pastime and of course, to succeed in the sport you need all the golfi ng paraphernalia. The stamp issue features some of the common golfi ng implements and we look at the history of the sport in Australia. The release of the issue will be just in time as we get ready to host the Presidents Cup. This prestigious event will attract huge crowds later in the year as they try to catch a glimpse of some of the game’s champions from around the world.
Our Stamp Collecting Month stamp issue, as always, features designs with children in mind, as well as for the young at heart. This year’s subject is consistently the most requested by

The living coral reefs of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands host a huge variety of marine life. This stamp issue gives us a close-up look at this marine wonderland through the photography of Cocos (Keeling) Islands resident Karen Willshaw.
Pulu Keeling National Park is located within the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and was proclaimed in December 1995. It is Australia’s sixth and smallest Commonwealth National Park and includes the 1.2 square-km land area of North Keeling Island and a marine area extending 1.5km around the island. Named after Captain William Keeling, the island has not been inhabited for any continuous period and is in a natural state.

,In many countries golf is regarded as an elite sport, particularly as golf courses require expanses of land, often in urban areas. In Australia plentiful space and our sporting culture has ensured a strong following of the sport.
Both the Australian Golf Club in Sydney and the Royal Melbourne Golf Club can lay claim to being the oldest golf club in the country. While the Australian was founded in 1882, it did not operate between 1888 and 1895. Royal Melbourne, although founded later on in 1891, has been in continuous operation, making it the longest functioning club.
Despite their longevity, neither club can claim to be the oldest golf course in Australia. The Bothwell course in Tasmania was established in 1839, and may well have been the fi rst golf course in the Southern Hemisphere. The fi rst game was played there by Scotsman Alexander Reid, who brought with him from Scotland clubs and the standard golf balls of the day called “featheries”. These were bull hide balls stuffed with feathers and introduced as early as the 17th century to replace wooden golf balls. The Bothwell Golf Club was formally established in 1902 and is still in operation.

A highlight of the 2011 Australian golfi ng year will be the hosting of The Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne in November. The Presidents Cup is a biennial series of matches between a US team and an international team representing the rest of the world outside Europe. It is hosted alternatively in the US and in countries represented by the international team. Royal Melbourne, which also hosted the cup in 1998, has the distinction of being the only course outside the USA to host the cup more than once.
Throughout its 17-year history, the world’s greatest players have participated, including Greg Norman, Fred Couples, Arnold Palmer, Peter Thomson, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods. Despite the competition, the spirit of The Presidents Cup is one of international harmony and understanding, with no prize money directly awarded to the competitors. Instead. each competitor allocates an equal portion of the funds generated to charities of his choice. Since the event’s inception in 1994, nearly $22 million has been raised for charities worldwide.

The world of ancient myth and legend is brought to life for the child in all of us with these six mythical creatures. The set of stamps is released to celebrate Stamp Collecting Month 2011.
FairyExcitable and contrary, fairies can be both malicious and good-hearted. Common in mythology, they can take on a number of guises. The winged, diminutive fi gure we know today fi rst appeared in 19th-century art.
TrollThis creature is often referred to as the ugliest of legendary beings. Grumpy, strong and not very clever, trolls originated in Scandinavia. In the famous Norwegian fairy tale “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” the troll who lives under the bridge is easily outsmarted by the wily goats.
MermaidIn Greek mythology the beautiful woman with the tail of a fi sh lures sailors to their deaths with her eerie song. More recently the virtuous Little Mermaid in Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 story bravely rescues the drowning prince when his ship is wrecked in a storm.

Stamp Collecting Month4 October 2011
Griffi nThis majestic being has the body of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle. It is very ancient, fi rst appearing in art of the Bronze Age. The Griffi n was often regarded as king of all creatures and responsible for guarding priceless treasure. According to medieval legend the noble griffi n mated only once and for life.
UnicornThis horse-like creature with a spiralling horn projecting from its forehead was fi rst mentioned by the ancient Greeks. In the Middle Ages it was believed that only a young girl could catch this wild and shy animal, and it is often shown with its head resting docilely in a maiden’s lap.
DragonThis creature appears in the mythology of most cultures. In European legend it is usually a malevolent, fi re-breathing monster with bat-like wings. It lives in a dark lair, like a cave, and in both the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf and the Christian story of St George the dragon is subdued and slain by the hero.

WHO WILLWIN IN2011?
Celebrate this year’s premiership champions!
AFL and NRL Premiers 2011
The achievement of Cadel Evans in this year’s Le Tour de France is being celebrated as the single most important sporting accomplishment by an Australian individual. It will always be legendary.
Evans won the coveted yellow jersey after a fl awless individual time trial in Grenoble at stage 20. This was to place him within reach of the championship. All hehad to do to complete a lifelong dream, and three gruelling weeks of competition, was to ride the 95kmstage 21 from Créteil to Paris. Evans would enter thecity along the historic Champs-Élysées with millions of Australians back home sharing the moment.
Australia loves its sporting heroes. To win this one event has always been something special and Australian cycling will never be the same. Thousands of young riders will dream of being the one to emulate the ride and subsequent victory of Cadel Evans.
Now we can all mark this historic sporting achievement with a range of products.

A world stamp exhibition has been held in Japan once a decade since 1971. This year’s exhibition will take centre stage on the Japanese philatelic calendar under the theme “Stamps Link the World”.
The venue is the Pacifi co Yokohama, which is a world-class convention complex located on the waterfront of Yokohama City. Australia Post will support the event through the release of two special products. For a country that has seen so much devastation over recent times we hope the event is a huge success for all those involved.

The Merino ram’s head design featured on the 2011 coins was used for the Australian shilling from 1938 until 1966. The model for the original design was the grand champion Merino “Uardry 0.1” and named after his home station. The design became known as the “Shilling Ram” and represented Australia’s growing wool industry.
