THE CLASSIFIEDS ARE SOARINGWITH OPPORTUNITIES.

BY KAREN GENTADULT EDUCATION CONNECTION

It is with great pleasure that I share the followingnews: The Virginia Association for Adult andContinuing Education (VAACE) Awards Committeeselected Linda Allen, Southwest Regional AdultEducation Program manager, to receive the 2016Outstanding Adult Education Leadership Award, and Iwas extremely honored to receive the 2016 Joan E.D.Kushnir Teacher of the Year Award.

The awards were presented on Nov. 2 during anawards banquet at the VAACE Conference held inGlen Allen. It was a good day for Southwest RegionalAdult Education (SRAE) and Southwest Virginia.Linda and I are very grateful to be recognized for thework that we do in adult and continuing education.

The Outstanding Adult Education LeadershipAward seeks to recognize outstanding and extraordi-nary contributions in the field of adult and continuing

education within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Thecriteria for selection includes: outstanding contribu-tions in the areas of administration, research, publica-tions, teaching, and service to the community, educa-tional institutions, or any combination of the above.

This award is given for superior contributionswhich promote the field of adult and continuing educa-tion. Activities may occur within the practice of adultand continuing education or they may occur within thebroader area of public service which has supportedadult and continuing education.

Here are some of the accomplishments of SRAEunder Linda’s leadership: In 2003, Linda was on theteam that created the Race to GED® and Fast TrackGED® initiatives which were implemented statewidein 2004. The regionalization of the Buchanan,Dickenson, Russell, and Tazewell counties adult edu-cation programs followed in 2005.

SRAE launched PluggedInVA (PIVA) in RussellCounty in 2009 and celebrated in 2012 when PIVAwas expanded statewide. From 2009 to present, SRAE

and its partners have offered 34 PIVA cohorts inRegion 2.PIVA received the Southwest VirginiaTechnology Council’s High Tech Excellence inEducation Award and the award for InnovativeExcellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology atthe International Conference on College Teaching &Learning. Looking for an alternative to the GED® cre-dential, SRAE implemented the National ExternalDiploma Program in 2015. The Joan E.D. KushnirTeacher of the Year Award recognizes continuing pro-fessional growth by teachers in an adult and continuingeducation program in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This award seeks to recognize exemplary professionalpractice and service to adult learners. The criteria forthis selection includes: outstanding contributions in theareas of teaching, curriculum development, innovativemethodology, and commitment to professional growthand development.

I began working in adult education in 2004 as aGED® Fast Track teacher under the Race to GED®statewide initiative and advanced to the position as

Adult Education/PluggedInVA Lead Teacher forRegion 2. I was an instructor in the 2009 PIVA pilotand since then have taught in 20 PIVA cohorts withindustry sectors ranging from software quality assur-ance, customer care, information technology, advancedmanufacturing, entrepreneurship, health care, andcrime scene technician.

As editor/writer of the Adult EducationConnection, a newspaper column that appears in sixweekly newspapers, and Achieve, the programnewsletter, I contribute significantly to the Region 2outreach plan. As a WorkKeys proctor/administrator, Ifacilitate trainings for WorkKeys and KeyTrain. I alsocontribute to curriculum development and mentor newadult education and PIVA instructors.

SRAE has many beneficial programs to offer toadult learners. Contact us at 866-581-9935 to find outhow we can help you reach your educational goals.
