As the life of a college student, therehave been many encounters withmy three favorite items we love toconsume: alcohol, fast foods, and thoccasional dose of Vitamin C. (In tform of trash can punch, of course.)But do we realize exactly how muchthis we consume, and in fact how bit is for you?
Let me break it down for you. Yougo out at least once a week, if not, two or three times. You haabout ve beers when youre out, among many shots. On youway home, you stop at a typical fast food place with friends amunch out. Have you counted the calories yet? With all of tyouve had 550 calories with beer alone, 56 calories each shoVodka, and about 600 in that juicy burger on your way home(Without fries and a soda.) How does that sound?
ats exactly what our hottie on the cover gives up secrets tDonovan Marshall is proof that healthy is sexy, so get on boRead on his new way of life and healthy living. He has somegreat tips!

You Asked... Study Breaks Staffanswers your burning questions.
Julie, What are goodlow-impact workouts tha
still work?
-Isa DAniell
Can low impact workouts he you burn calories and weight as well as high imp
moves? Absolutely! Despiwhat some people may say, lowimpact exercises can get yoheart rate into your target hearate zone. You just have to woa little harder. Yoga, pilates, spinning, walking and swimming aa few of the popular ones.
Alex, What is the best newiet worth trying?
Amber Lankford
Honestly, I dont believe in diets.ey are destined for failure. Youtarve yourself for a week or a
month and then end up gaining
he weight back. Each resultepends on the individual. A dieteeds to become your lifestyle. In
my experience, eating things youke but in smaller portions and
working out is the best way to losehe weight you want and keep it o.
Jennifer, Does the SevenDay Bikini Diet from the
March issue REALLY work?
-Theresa Clark
Like I said before, I swear byit. I lost 10 pounds before mybrothers wedding by strictly
following the diet. However, like any other crash diet, exerciseand continuing to eat healthy isrequired to keep the weight oafter you go o the diet.
Abby, What is your worstunhealthy vice?
-Bernadette Creasey
Donuts. Absolutely. I am a suckerfor every type and brand - fromnational Krispy Kremes to localsugary confections like Gordoughs
- Ive had them all. e worstpart is, I have found absolutelyno substitution for their sugarygoodness, so I am left with anincurable weakness for glazeddonuts hot out of the oven.

Always on the go, DonovanMarshall ts in a workouteveryday. As soon as he
rolls out of bed to the minutebefore falling asleep, he spendsspare time at the gym. isroutine wasnt always scheduled
though. Growing up, Donovan was on the heavier side. His way of life needed to change, and fast, because college wasjust around the corner.
The Build UpComing from a single-parenthousehold, Donovans motherprepared home cooked mealsthat were loaded with grease. She just worked so much thatshe made the quick and greasyfoods for me, says Donovan.Having this unhealthy diet ledhim to be the chubby kid in classaround the 5th grade. His weightescalated from there. His habitsbecame increasingly worse as hegot older. Whether it be pizza, hamburgers, red meat, and sodasespecially, he ate it all. Fast foodsconsumed his life.
High SchoolWhen he reached 270 pounds junior year of high school,Donovan knew that heshould start to lose weight ifhe planned on participatingin extra curricular activities.I didnt want to be the fatkid on the sidelines. SoDonovan decided to try out
for the cheer squad at hishigh school. After makingit on the team, he began tobuild close relationships withthe ladies in high school, butnone were ever classied as,e One. e ladies viewed
him as someone to protectthem, rather than beingtheir high school sweetheart.Weight didnt seem to bethe problem, because I havea loveable personality, says
Donovan. He was reallyexcited to participate in hishigh schools cheer squad, where he not only developedthe majority of friendships with his teammates, but alsowas forced to shape up.
Breaking PointBeing a family oriented person,Donovan holds his family andthose close to him dear to his
heart. I realized that I neededto lose weight when I saw someof my family members healthdeteriorate. I chose to makebetter food selections, cut downcarbs, eat more green vegetables, and exercised dailyalwaysfollowing with a gallon of water.Hard work and determination was a huge factor in leadingDonovan down the right path
to lose weight.
ChangesCollege is another chapter in
life where you can create a newimage for yourself. You havethe opportunity to changefor the better and becomesomeone dierent than who you were in high school. Youmake new friends, you make your own schedule, and mostof all, you make your ownfood choices. College had ahuge inuence on Donovansdecision to become t andhealthy. He stayed away from
his mothers home cookedmeals, and changed his eatinghabits all together. His newdiet consisted of smallerportions, no eating out at fastfood chains, no drinking sodas, and strictly eating dinnerbefore 8pm.
InspirationDonovan used self-motivation
to change his heavy habitHe surrounded himself witothers who wanted to changas well, and join the roato become healthy. I hirea personal trainer for thremonths in order to assist m with obtaining my goal. Hgave me valuable insight ohow the mind and body cawork hand in hand to achiev your goal. at goal wdenitely reached. Donovalost about 95 pounds.
Reactions
Returning home after his rs year of college was a hushock to Donovans familyey were all very excited to sethe pounds that he once hadgone. Hed get reactions sucas, Donovan, are you eatingand Why are you working ouso much? e best conclusionI just wanted to live a healthielife. Ive committed to be t.

Growing up, Christopher Fuller wasridiculed for his weight and was oftencalled Chubs. Inuenced by his familys
eating habits of frequently dining out,Christopher didnt develop a healthy diet andhad a vice for fast food and energy drinks. He

The problem most people have wit
races is they are lost on how to be
gin the process. If you have neverun before, the idea of running lon
distances only to get to your destina
tion and be exhausted seems point
less. Thats what cars are for, rightRunning, however, is one of the mos
popular recreational sports for a rea
son. But, as with most things in life
the most rewarding things are thones that require effort. Following
are tips on how to train for your rs
5K race safely!

WHAT YOU NEED TO HIT THE GROUND RUNNING
FROMTHE
COUCHTOA
THE PLANFirst, make sure that you have had a lot
of hydration before you run. This shouldbe gradual rather than swigging an entire
bottle of water minutes before you
leave, so then your body will be able to
lose water safely, but you will not haveto worry about feeling the water slosh
around in your stomach. So, if you are
stretched and ready to run, lets GO!

If you want to train for speed, replace your cross trainidays with sprint drills. If you run on a quarter mile trasprint the sides (the longest parts of the track) and wthe edges for a mile. Otherwise, cross training can be anthing from walking, biking or swimming.
STRETCHINGOne thing that new runners are unaware of is the
importance of stretching. If you do not believe it, try
doing a multi-mile run without stretching rst. Running
utilizes muscles differently than many other types of
exercises, and there are four areas that you should be
sure to hit before starting your run. No matter how
long or short your distance is for that day each stretch
should be held for 10 seconds, and can be done upto 10 times. It is important to feel like your muscles
are loose and relaxed, because they will be put under
stress and tighten once you start your run.
QUADRICEPS
Your quadriceps are themuscles in front of yourthighs. When quadriceps
are stretched, you havegreater mobility and legrange and it is easier to in-crease your speed.
While standing, grab holdof a stationary object tobalance yourself. Use yourother hand to bend yourleg at the knee towardsthe buttocks. Make sureyour hand is gripping atthe ankle, and that youkeep your knee parallel
with your body line andDO NOT SLOUCH. Slouch-ing will null the stretchseffectiveness.
CALVES
Calves are always the rst placeyou feel strain when running. They are what actually propel
you when your feet push off ofthe ground, so they see a lotof action.
Find an elevated surface approxi-mately 3 or 4 inches from theground. Rest the balls of your feeton the surface with your heel to-ward the ground, and push untilyou feel the stretch. Make sure thatyou dont stretch the calf too hardby picking a surface that is toohigh, otherwise you will overworkthem.
LATERAL HIP ROTATION
This is a common running stretch, but very few know wexactly they are stretching. For your information, thisthe piriformis stretch, which is responsible for latehip rotation.
Lie on your back with your knees bent, then cross yoankle over your knee. Grab behind your thighs with boof your hands and bring your knee towards your body.
HAMSTRING
Your hamstring runs from behind your knee to your btocks, so pulling that muscle will take a serious toll on yospeed, and even ability to run at all.
Most runners do this by standing with their leg waist hand gradually leaning forward. I nd it more effective, hoever, to lie down grabbing your thigh with both hands wyour knee still bent. Bring your thigh to a 90 degree anwith the ground, then slowly straighten your knee. Whyou become more limber you can pull your leg closer your chest for more of a stretch.
Have a running question?
