Connecting Churches to Change Our World
Not Holding Their Breath by Stewart Pickle, D.Min.
This event is for EVERY church that has used the Special Events Trailer and all those who may one day decide to use it! Texas State Insurance Codes have changed and we are required to update and renew the training certification for all groups using the trailer from this point forward. We will actually be setting up and tearing down some of the amenities in the trailer, so dress casually. Since the video training video did not incorporate the new rules, previous training will not suffice for future checkout of the trailer. Make sure you have the person present who is your church’s responsible party or their designated alternate. Following the training session, new training certificates will be signed, dated, witnessed, and kept on file in the TEBA office.
Special Events Trailer Training by Tracy Jaggers, D.Min.
Often those of us who are members of existing churches hear of a new church which is starting and think that it must be nice to have people who are eager to be part of a new church start. That would be nice, but they aren’t eagerly waiting for a new church to start. When that church planter or someone with him—if he has that blessing—talks to people they are thinking, “I couldn’t care less.” There are some conditions which make it easier to start a church. 1. Social Connections. If the church planter has been a teacher, a coach or worked with a para-church or
community organization where he has built trust and relationships, it gives him relationships and credibility which will get him a hearing and maybe at least one visit to activities related to starting the church.
2. A community crisis. If something traumatic happens and God places the church planter at the right place and time with the right message to make sense and bring healing, it can result in a quick response to the new church. With bold action and speech and rapid effective basic discipleship, momentum for rapid growth using on the job training and just in time leadership development, an amazing movement of God can come out of an available and focused pastor.
3. A person of peace. God has been working in many people before the church planter came. As he is sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and listens with his heart, God will expose the need of this person of peace. In Scripture we see Nicodemus, the woman at the well, Lydia, Cornelius, and the Ethiopian Treasurer—all are people of peace. The church planter has to leave his time line and focus on developing this person. The person will require a lot of attention, but they will reach maybe 60 people often in the first year. They will usually train those they reach. The person of peace has the social connections. They give the pastor credibility. The transformation in their lives is the strongest sermon.
4. A strong core group hived off of one or more partner churches. These leaders will need to bring the group to a common vision, mission and values. One benefit is that growth to maturity is predictable. A negative is they will resemble the churches they came from in ways that raise the question as to whether another church like ours is needed (unless the new church is in an area which lacks a church).
Without conditions like these, most church planters go through a time of false hope, frustration, spiritual brokenness, and testing of his call before beginning to harvest seed he has planted to start building community among the people he is to reach. He must avoid the temptation to build structure in the group before growth is over 100 in attendance at worship events. He must concentrate on personal evangelism, discipling those who come into the small groups to do the same, and keeping change as key part of the new church until they can finally launch with sufficient people. God is faithful. When He calls, that very call is a promise that He is at work and He will not fail.

Some time ago I became aware of a book by Steve Harper, a writer out of Austin who authored the book The Ripple Effect. The premise of the book is simple - Relationships; their impact, value, and life-changing reality. Harper asks a simple question in his introduction, “How will you want to be remembered?” and challenges the reader to chose to live a life that is well lived where relationships are focused on and developed intentionally. While the book is not based on scripture it has a number of elements that will echo biblical principles of relationship building.
The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 – Developing A Relationship Mindset where he discusses the way our lives intersect (ripples) and the unpredictable opportunities that occur through our relationships. Additionally he suggests a model of understanding others by better understanding yourself. Part II - Planning A Relationship Strategy is designed to help you understand how existing relationships can be expanded and how to develop healthy relational webs of connection. He further explores the ways to leverage social media and build a network of relationships even when you’re facing hard times. Part III - Practicing Relationships, Harper describes different levels of relationships and how to deepen them and how we can cause ripples that benefit others. He closes the book by sharing a number of stories of how relational ripples impact lives of other people.
We know this stuff, right? We know that healthy relationships are critical in everything we do. We know the basis of healthy relationships within the church family are built upon the reality of our hearts being transformed by our relationship with Christ. That we are meant to walk together in harmony remembering the prayer of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane found in John 17:20-21, “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” As followers of Christ we should have the best understanding of the value of healthy relationships and how to build them but sometimes things interfere with strong healthy relationships being built. I am grateful for the many pastors, ministers, and church leaders in our Association who have given time to build healthy relationships with each other. Earlier this year we had a group of pastors who came together for a Prayer and Planning Retreat. I watched these men as they prayed for one another, listened to concerns and praises, shared dreams for God’s work within the churches they serve, and enjoyed fellowshipping with each other. I have heard back from many of them about what the retreat meant to them and how they particularly enjoyed getting to spend a significant amount of time with other pastors in the Association. In February we had a gathering of Church Planters, Missions Ministers, and Pastors from Sponsor Churches. It was a joy to hear the stories they shared about the way God is working in the ministries they are part of and how they saw God’s leadership in the churches that are being planted. It was a special joy to hear them pray for one another and for God’s favor upon their efforts and boldness in sharing their faith in Christ. I was reminded how the Lord is so faithful to plant people in our lives to encourage, shape, and be the presence of Christ among us. I pray you’re building relationships intentionally.
