The ChallengeThe Presto program is an automated farecollection system that will establish a singlefare card based on contactless smart cardtechnology, allowing cardholders access totransit authorities throughout the Provinceof Ontario in Canada. Current efforts arefocused on the Greater Toronto Area's (GTA)9 transit service providers providing multiplemodes of transit (e.g. trains, subways, buses and streetcar); however, efforts areunderway to extend the capability to otherregions, such as the National Capital Regionas well as evaluate the introduction of newtransit-related services, such as commuterparking and para-transit.

The Presto initiative, led by the OntarioMinistry of Transportation (MTO), is a keypublic commitment as part of the OntarioGovernment's "Growth Strategy". Its focus ison increasing transit ridership andoperational efficiency, improving customerexperience, and supporting theever-increasing demand for intra and interintegration.

Thales, together with Accenture, wasawarded the contract to supply this systemin October 2006, among fierce competitionand stringent full compliance requirements.

The new system covers presently thefollowing service providers:• GO Transit• Toronto Transit Commission (TTC)• Brampton Transit• Burlington Transit• Durham Region Transit• Hamilton Street Railway Co• Mississauga Transit• Oakville Transit• York Region Transit

The challenge is to accommodate all serviceproviders' particular business rules and makethem clear and attractive to the rider. The systemincludes attractive features such as auto-reload,web services, loyalty schemes and "co-fare"discounts for transfers.

The "GTA fare system" will first spread to thesuburban transit of Toronto mainly carried out byGO Transit, Oakville Transit and TTC, starting inSeptember 2009. Over a further 9- monthperiod, the system will be extended to allparticipating service providers. The GreaterToronto Transportation Authority (GTTA) willmanage the fare system.
