organization itself depicts a clear image
that people all work in a team. One
eminent thing we know about teams is
that if the team wins, all the team
members win. Knowing this moves our
focus on to achieving the team goal
rather than our own individual aims
and the performance of the team can
then shift into another gear. However,
it also imperatively requires effective
leadership to maneuver people in
teams. In addition, understanding on
how to motivate team members is also
critical in ensuring successfulness of
team.
This short course thus considers the
critical role of leadership, motivation in
generating effective teams in
organizations. This is a fun, interactive
course that develops the key skills
necessary for becoming a high-
performing member of a high-
performing team. It will enable
participants to discover the mix of
attributes, skills and capabilities
required of successful leadership and
the nature of working in teams.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Develop an awareness and understanding about:
i) The role of leadership and its key importance in developing high performance teams.
Ii) The role and importance of teams in organizations, the characteristics of effective teams and the strategies
organizations pursue to create and build effective teams
Iii) The importance of motivation in leading effective teams
Iv) The individual skills and attributes we need to function as effective leaders and team players, so as to identify
areas for development and growth.
Attain some practical experience on how to:
i) Fit in well with any team and contribute positively to its effective performance
ii) Motivate their fellow team-members to perform more successfully and consistently
iii) Co-operate in team-based problem-solving as opposed to working in isolation
iv) Understand the need for diversity and be able to work with different types of people
v) Deal better with difficult personalities, improve their influencing skills and help their team from good to great.

Ms. Haryanni Binti Harun is 43 years old and married with
four children. She was born in Penang but grew up in Ipoh,
Perak. Her first degree is Bachelor of Mass Communication -
major in Public Relations from Universiti Teknologi MARA
(1997). She then worked as a Project Executive with Silveritage
Corporation Sdn Bhd (1998) and was in-charge of handling
tourism related projects for Perak. However due to the
economic downturn at that time, many of the projects were put on hold. Hence
she applied to a master’s program in International Islamic University Malaysia and
graduated in 2001 with a Master of Management. She then worked with Taylor’s
College, Subang Jaya as a Lecturer (contract) under a joint program with Universiti
Sains Malaysia - Diploma of Mass Communication program. Her contract was only
from August until December 2001. From January 2002 to date she is a Lecturer
attached to the Department of Management and Humanities, Universiti Teknologi
PETRONAS. She is currently undertaking PhD studies in the area of Management at
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. Her key area of research is Organizational
Behavior, Human Resources Management, Communication and Oil & Gas Business
related. She is also a trainer, facilitator and content developer for teambuilding,
team engagement and strategic planning programs / workshops for UTP and
