A mountain top experience. We know something about mountain tops here in Alaska. We have several hikes right in the local area that lead to some breathtaking scenery. Each time I scamper up “Flat Top” I’m rewarded with a stunning view. As I ski the upper reaches of Alyeska, I enjoy the beauty of Turnagain Arm. I share a little something with Peter, James, and John, as I, too, have climbed to the top of Mount Tabor in the Holy Land, site of the Transfiguration account in today’s Gospel. Of all of the sites I’ve visited in the Holy Land, one of the most profound moments occurred atop Mount Tabor. A little bit of the same “rush” occurred upon reaching the beautiful church atop Mount Tabor as I have previously experienced on Flat Top and at Alyeska. I can’t say I saw our Lord transfigured before me; however, I did sense a call from Jesus to remain not in my “mountain top experience,” but to bring that experi-ence back down to the valley/the world below. In essence, Jesus said the same thing to Peter, who wanted to pitch his tent atop Mount Tabor. Jesus told him to leave the mountain, and share his mountain top experience, the glimpse of the glory that is God, with others. Peter would experience that glory in his own life as he literally gave his life for his Lord.
Maybe we experience a similar “rush” when praying before the Blessed Sacrament, or at the birth of a newborn baby, or even as we stand at the graveside of a loved one. Moments of recognizing God’s Divine presence leave us in awe. But what about the “dry” moments? How about when the dryness and lack of an awareness of God’s presence lasts for months, or years, or decades? That happened to Saint Mother Theresa. What about when we’re hurting; really hurting and it seems that our life experiences nail us to the cross?
It is easy to see God when life is good. When everything is going our way. There is a link, however, between the view from the hilltop of the Transfiguration and the view from the hilltop called Golgotha. Do we sense God’s Divine presence in our suffering? In the crucifix-ions we experience? In the loss of a loved one; in the pain of illness; in the aftermath of a shat-tered marriage; in the betrayal by a friend? Christ is always present to us, especially in the most trying of times. We experience God’s immense glory and the life to which we are called amidst both Mount Tabor and Golgotha. Our life is a tale of two hilltops. May we give thanks to God Who works through all things for His greater glory!
A Tale of Two Hilltops

Dear Lord, Thank you for teaching me to be generous as you have been generous with me.
Thank you for showing me that all I am and have are gifts from you and that these gifts from you, Lord, are meant to be shared.
Show me the joys of generosity.
Help me to understand that others, perhaps unknown to me, depend on me for help.
Remind me that my world, my parish, needs “Good Samaritans” to heal the wounds of our times.
Make me a gift to others in your name. Amen.
The way we live….

The Knights of Columbus will be holding our next blood drive on Sunday, August 6th, 8:30 A.M. – 12:15 P.M. at St. Benedicts Church back parking lot.
Wouldn’t it be a tragedy if you needed blood and no one came to donate? Please give so someone can live. It is truly a gift of life.
The Blood Bank has asked us to let our donors know that appointments will have priority over walk-ins. Walk-ins will be worked in as soon as possible, if it can be done safely.
*** NOTE: You can self-register prior to receiving a phone call and pick your own time. Call the blood bank for assistance in getting this setup. ***
If you are able to donate, please contact Bob McMorrow, Sr. at 243-7992.
The Knights of Columbus are holding their 8th annual kid’s sock drive.
All the children’s socks collected will be donated to Catholic Social Services and used in their many programs.
All new socks can be placed in the basket which is located in the rear of the church.
This is just one of the many items that Catholic Social Services programs needs on a day to day basis. The drive will run during August. Please help those who are less fortunate. Thank you.

What is Catholicism?
Are you curious?
Are you interested in joining the
Catholic church?
We meet once a month in the summer and in
September we meet every Tuesday evening in the upper room of the gym.
Some say that Rabbie, the carpenter’s son, is a dreamer; but Rabbie says he works from his heart, carving not what is, but what could be. When Rabbie goes to a distant town to sell his carvings, he finds the town
besieged by a fierce and destructive giant. The towns-people despair, but Rabbie suggests that if the giant
were treated like a king, he might behave like one. The message of this heart-warming fable is charming: that
which is loved will reveal its loveliness. The Giant King is an ideal choice for children in kinder-
garten through 4th grade. Its underlying themes of belonging, kindness, and peacemaking can be tied into many aspects of a school’s curriculum: social studies,
reading, writing, art, research activities, and drama. The associated Educators’ Guide helps parents and teachers choose one or several areas to focus on depending on
the child’s grade level and interest.
We are partnering with Dynamic Catholic to evangelize and cate-chize our community. One of the benefits is that we receive a box of items to give away each month. This month we have Be-coming the Best Version of Your-self, a CD by Matthew Kelly. Feel free to take one. Also, check out all the other resources on their website. http://dynamiccatholic.com/
It’s easy! 1) go to www.formed.org, 2) scroll down, 3) put in our code: 2a81e2 4) choose what you want to watch
It’s simple! Check it out and pass it on to those in our
parish and school. (Our contract does not allow us to send it outside of
St. Benedict/Lumen Christi)
What is virtue?
The word "virtue" is used as a synonym for goodness or sobriety or some likable personality trait, but the Church uses
the term in a much more precise way. Virtues are special graces given by God to the soul for the accomplishment of
particular objectives. They inhere in the soul and are subject to strengthening or weakening. The Church distinguishes between two general categories of virtues: theological and
moral.
