ACTIVITIES
UPGRADE
2009 - 2010
STRUCTURE AND STAFF
65 professors from different disciplines, 11 technician and about 70 young researchers in
training are affiliated to NIS Centre. Since when NIS became "Interdepartmental
Centre" in 2007 affiliation is ruled by the Centre's Statute. At the moment of the
affiliation request the applicants have to demonstrate a comprovate activity in at least
one of the Research Lines developped within the Center. Affiliation is individual,
voluntary and free of charge. All affiliates are requested to supply data needed for
institutional operation (included evaluation processes), to declare the affiliation in the
publications related to NIS research lines, to develop their activities with collaborative
spirit and sharing of specific expertieses and knowledges. Affiliation is conditional to a
three years evaluation of scientific production. Affiliates participate to the assembly and
to scientific activities and have access to the Centre's resources. Direction and
management of the Centre are entrusted to the Scientific Council and to the Director.
NIS’s temporary contract personnel (Ph.D. students, post-doc and grant holders and
employees with temporary contracts) is an essential resource for research and
education activities at NIS. Expenses for all these people is one of the most important
cost of NIS, which supplied in the years 2009-2010 many grants founded mostly by
specific projects financed by European, National and Regional funds agencies.

AN EVALUATION OF NIS RESEARCH PRODUCTION The NIS Centre is engaged in a process of self-evaluation of its scientific activity, also in
terms of quantitative research productivity, according to accepted international
bibliometric standards. The scientific activity of a team of scientists can be evaluated in
terms of: i) the number of published articles (defining the overall quantity of work); ii)
the impact factor (IF) of the journal where the articles have been published (defining the
quality of the research product as evaluated by a few but highly qualified independent
scientists: Editors and Reviewers); iii) the total number of citations received by each
published paper (defining the quality of the research product as evaluated by all
scientists working world-wide on the topics). The evaluation of the scientific activity of
the NIS scientists has been done here below according to these objective criteria. In the
period ranging from end 2004 to October 2010, NIS scientists have published 575
articles in international journals classified in the “ISI Web of Science” database.
Distributions along the activity years of the published articles (on top) and relative citations
received (on bottom) by the NIS scientists. Orange data are a projection of the expected papers
and citations at the end of 2010 based on the data collected in the first 36 weeks of the 2010
The research activity covers the most relevant aspects of Chemistry, Materials
Science, Physics, Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Engineering and
Metallurgy, and has been published on prestigious journals, as detailed here
below. These graphs report the ranking scientific disciplines and international
journals where NIS articles mostly appear. This represents an evaluation
passed on the quantitative level.
On bottom: Distribution of published articles among different scientific disciplines. As a single
journal may be classified in different disciplines the sum over all column exceed the total number of
articles (461). On top: 10 journals where the published papers by NIS have appeared.
Coming to the qualitative evaluation, here follows the list of the most prestigious
journals (ranked with their IF) where NIS researches have published

From this table we learn that 90 articles (20% of the total NIS Production) have been
published on journals with an IF higher than 4.0. Note that the median IF of the journal
belonging to the scientific disciplines of interest for NIS is much lower: Chemistry:
Physical (1.739); Materials Science: Multidisciplinary (0.985); Physics, Atomic, Molecular
& Chem.( 1.538); Chemistry: Multidisciplinary (1.032); Nanoscience & Nanotechnology
(1.438); Engineering: Chemical (0.791); Metallurgy & Metallurgical Engin. (0.437);
Physics: Condensed Matter (1.259); Physics: Applied (1.284); Chemistry: Applied
(0.862). This means that the scientific results of NIS scientists appear, by far, on best
journals of each discipline.
