SERMON TOPICS & SCRIPTURE SERMON TITLE: “Mumbling and Grumbling” SCRIPTURE: Exodus 17: 1-7
Nursery Available for all Services
PARENTS
As Gadsden Street is a Safe Sanctuary Church,
we ask that you remember that children
under the age of 18 need an adult to
accompany them anytime they are in the
hallways or restrooms. No one should be in
these areas during worship or other
activities without parental supervision. This
is a Safe Sanctuary guideline and is put in
place for their protection and safety. Thank
you for your cooperation.

NURSERY & CHILDREN’S ACTIVITY BAGS
Our beautiful nursery is available for infants and
children. There are children’s activity bags with
crayons & coloring books in the Narthex. Please
ask an usher if your child would like one during
our service.
If you are chilly during service, please see an usher to borrow a shawl.
Today, if you hear (God’s) voice, do not harden
your hearts as you did at Meribah, and as you did
that day at Massah in the desert, where your fathers
tested and tried me, though they had seen what I
did.” (Psalm 95:11)
This week I made a mistake. Last week I was
ticked off, but this week I made a mistake. So again,
here’s what happened. On Monday evening Ron and
I showed up for our yearly HOA meeting. We
thought this would be an excellent opportunity to
meet some of our neighbors, share in a “free meal,”
and to be active participants in our community. At
this point some of you are probably laughing right
out loud. I must admit HOAs are a new thing for us.
As many places as we’ve lived, as many homes as
we’ve owned through the years, this is our first
experience with an HOA.
My first hint that I’d made a mistake should
have been the fact that with 96 homes in our
community there were 24 people at the meeting. The
meeting began well enough, with the HOA president
welcoming everyone to the gathering, but it didn’t
take long before it went downhill-fast! After hearing
the reports of the folks who coordinate all of the
details of the HOA, the complaining began. It didn’t
take long for whining and complaining, mumbling
and grumbling to fill to the room. After an hour of
this, I’d had enough and we left the meeting in
progress.
In thinking about it all, I couldn’t miss the
humor in the fact that I’d spent all afternoon
studying the scripture we’ll be looking at in worship
this Sunday (March 19). Exodus 17: 1-7 tells the
story of the people of God fresh on the road from
slavery to freedom when a bout of whining and
complaining, mumbling and grumbling breaks out.
Although they’ve just experienced God’s amazing
power at work setting them free, even though
they’ve just received manna and quail, now they’re
thirsty. Not seeing any possibilities for water to
quench their thirst they begin by blaming Moses and
then whining and complaining about their condition.
Unfortunately it isn’t only the Israelites in the
desert who fall into the temptation of whining and
complaining. Unchecked mumbling and grumbling
lead to division among people, it’s destructive to
community, it inhibits hospitality. In short, in every
way it is the exact opposite of God’s intentions for
the Beloved Community.
The antidote for whining and complaining,
mumbling and grumbling is to be thankful. In the
midst of whatever circumstances we find ourselves
we trust God is with us. We give thanks for God’s
abiding presence and unending care.
This week I had an opportunity to visit with one of
our church members. She’d set aside all sorts of
poems and thoughts that have been used in crafting
gifts of encouragement for others. Among her stash
was this poem:
I do not know what next may come across
my pilgrim way,
I do not know tomorrow’s need, nor see
beyond today:
But this I know- my Savior knows the path
I cannot seek
And I can trust His wounded hand, to
guide and care for me.
I do not know what may befall of sunshine
or of rain,
I do not know what may be mine of
pleasures and of pain;
But this I know-my Savior knows and
whatever it be
Still I can trust His love to give what is
best for me.
Blessings,
Pastor Gail

our world, you are invited to create a reflection on
Easter in your medium of choice (glass or quilting,
