the a t r iu ma student competition sponsored by iida & gpi design.
task : the atrium is a building located in westlake, ohio which houses several businesses, including gpi design, whose specialty is led panels. work as a group to transform a cold, uninviting space into a friendly, exciting lobby for tenants & visitors; gpi design’s led panels should be emphasized.
process : using images & ideas inspired by nature, led panels with a turquoise stone pattern were used to provide the elevator as a focal point. staggering these elements provided movement to an otherwise bland elevator. wood panels were added as an underlying feature to provide a sense of privacy to occupants.
my group consisted of myself, laura rozek, & danielle garson.
we were awarded “best use of led panels” & “first place overall”.

Multiple levels offers space differentiation without barriers
such as walls.
Ramps provide a smooth transition between levels in addition to another source of circulation.
Plants in conjunction with existing brick structure offers a
resourceful combination of materials by combining
new [plants] with old [bricks].

•using levels to differeniate spaces is more effective than traditional methods (such as walls)
notes from a meeting with dr. laurie katz, associate professor of early childhood education in osu school of teaching and learning.
Primarily focused on children in Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten.
activities• “circle time” is very important; should be a designated area in classroom.• front board should be visible throughout the room.• sand/water tables are good for motor skill development.
• implement different “stations” throughout the classroom (i.e. art, media, games, etc.)
facilities• bathrooms in classes; sink in classroom with adjoining toilet(s).• children need a place to expend energy indoors.• gardens are good; provide additional learning techniques.• each student should have his/her own space (ie cubbies, lockers, etc.) within the classroom.• classrooms should include tables rather than desks; this provides more opportunities for discussion and col-
laboration among students.• round or hexagon-shaped tables are preferred over rectangular; no “head” of the table.• using levels to differeniate spaces is more effective than traditional methods (such as walls).
