USAGE:We use “ used to” to describe past habits, routines, and states that are now finished

I used to laugh a lot ( but now, I don’t laugh any more)

USED TO + INFINITIVE

Example : One day , in a park, 2 old women met each others. They recalled continually about their past life. One said:

“ I used to be a very beautiful girl” (1)

One replied:“ I used to have an attractive smile like Mona Lisa” (2)

(1) Now, she is no longer beautiful.

(2) Now, she doesn’t have an attractive smile like Mona Lisa anymore.

What is the negative form of used to?

Used not/ usedn’t

Eg:

+ She used not /usedn’t to like Tom but she quite likes him now+ You used not/ usedn’t to go to England but you are in London now+ They used not/ usedn’t to eat rice

What is the question form of used to?

• Interrogative : used + S

eg: Used she like him?

• Negative interrogative: used + S + not / usedn’t + S

eg: Used she not like him?Or: Usedn’t she like him?

Questions can also be formed with did: did ( not) use to

Eg: I used to drink beerDid you use to drive bicycle?

I usedn’t to drink beer=> Didn’t you use to drive car?

Exercise: Change these sentences into negative and question form:

DIFFERENCES:

• Subject questions ask to find out about the subject.

• In Subject questions, who, what ,which… are used as subjects.

• We don’t use auxiliary verbs in subject questions

• Object questions ask about objects.

• In Object questions, who, what ,etc. are used as objects.

• We use auxiliary verbs in object questions
