How to Throw a Fun & Educational
“PAIN AWARENESS FAIR”

Objectives
• The participant will be able to list the steps to take to organize a “Pain Awareness Fair” at his/her organization.
• With the goal of educating clinicians and increasing awareness of Pain related issues.

Putting it all Together
• 1. Identify target audience
– ie: RN’s; laypeople
• 2. Select a Theme & Develop Simple Objectives
– ie: Pain Awareness; Debunking Pain Myths (keep it general)
• 3. Identify Location (Highly Visible is best)
• 4. Select a date & time (overlap various shifts?)
• 5. Get administration approval (for proposed above plan)
• 6. Reserve location for you date.
• 7. Identify Equipment (poster-boards, tables) & reserve.
– “Site Visit” to figure out table layout, electrical outlets, etc

8. Brainstorm Topics & Assign
– good to have some ideas ahead of time….don’t miss the “Basics”
– Determine deadline for poster (or presentation) completion. Identify a date for a “dry run” and present topics to each other.
– Presentation should be < 3 minutes and Interactive!
• 9. Invite Outside Guests
– Optional, but can be value-added, if carefully selected
– Keep limited, but be careful not to turn down sincere offers…just make sure PAIN focused!
• Health-System’s Outpatient Pain Program
• Pharmacy department
• Chaplain Poster presentation on “Spiritual Pain”

• 10. Educational Opportunities
– Work with your Nurse Educator to obtain Contact Hours
• Paperwork usually needs submitted >1 month in advance
• Optional: CME’s (physicians'). Contact Hours (Social Work, Pharmacy)??
• 11. Raffle (optional).
• 12. Speak with all relevant departments about “Logistics”
– Administration: make sure date doesn’t conflict with anything important
– Housekeeping (set-up tables night before, clean-up)
– Volunteer coordinator (to help us at sign-in table)
• 13 Develop a Flyer to advertise event

• Gear information toward their Knowledge base / Educational level
• But “Keep it Simple” & don’t overwhelm with too much info!

Select Date & Time
• September is Pain Awareness Month
– but may hold fair at anytime throughout year.
• Time: Incorporate time for all shifts to be able to attend
– but take into account the number of people you will need to schedule to “cover” the Fair
• Advertise in advance

• Provides documentation for CEU
• Individuals must have the Pain Expert initial an empty space on their passport after listening to a short presentation.

• Simple – quick points about your topic
• Easy to Read – no paragraphs, use bullet points and pictures.
• Evidence based – site your references
• Interactive – use games, quizzes, puzzles. One minute or less.
• Goal – have participant walk away with a new piece of knowledge.
