6. ACHIEVEMENT Together with the Malaysian Psychiatric Association, our department was actively involved in
co-hosting the 29th World Congress of the International Association for Suicide Prevention.
Hospital Sentosa and UNIMAS were co-organisers as well. The event was hosted at the Borneo
Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) from 18th July – 21st July, 2017. The Congress was an
immense success. Delegates and Speakers from more than 47 countries worldwide attended
the Congress.
The department was actively involved in an Industry-sponsored research activity. We
worked together with the CRM Unit (Clinical Research Malaysia) of the hospital. We
managed to recruit three patients and two of them had already completed the Study by
December 2017. The Study was named the “BRILLIANT Study” which is a phase-3 Trial
of the new psychotropic drug called Blonanserin.
The department was offered an opportunity to take part in another phase-3 Study titled,
“ROUTE 6” which is a 6-monthly Depot injection of Paliperidone Palmitate. The due
agreements have been signed and we are about to embark on patient recruitment soon.

scope of service with the help and the assistance of the very supportive hospital management
committee.
We are also very glad to have been able to acquire the present counselling area and shall
create additional interview rooms to cater more effectively to the ever increasing number of

DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SURGERY
HEAD OF DEPARTMENT: MR(DR) NIK AZIM BIN NIK ABDULLAH
General Surgery is headed by Mr(Dr) Nik Azim bin Nik Abdullah, Senior Consultant Hepatobiliary & General Surgeon since 2010. Currently, a number of subspeciality units had established as the requirement for Sarawak General Hospital as the main Tertiary Centre for the whole Sarawak. The Hepatobiliary Unit established its own unit although still under General Surgery pool. The Colorectal Surgery coordinated under the care of Mr Chieng Tiong How (Consultant Colorectal Surgeon). The Upper GI (Gastrointestinal) Surgery coordinated under the care of Ms Hashimah Abdul Rahman (Consultant Upper GI Surgeon). The Visiting Vascular Team and Breast & Endocrine Team from West Malaysia continued rendering their services to Sarawak General Hospital on a monthly basis (for Vascular) and 2 monthly basis (for B&E), in view of such expertise still not available yet in the hospital.
2. Department's Vision and Mission 2.1 To provide an equitable and caring service of the highest quality with professionalism and utmost respect to human dignity which is accessible to all people of Sarawak 2.2 To develop the various subspecialties of surgery to a standard comparable to international units 2.3 To provide an excellent training ground for paramedics, undergraduates and postgraduates in the various fields of surgery 2.4 To provide health education to staffs and publics 3. Manpower 3.1 Doctors In Year 2017, the GS unit run by 13 Surgeons: 1 Jusa B (HPB), 3 Jusa C (GS), 4 UD56 and 5 UD52/54. Most of the Surgeons are fully occupied to cater the increasing daily workload and covering District Hospitals (Sibu, Miri Sarikei and Bintulu Hospital during their shortage)(2 days monthly visit to Serian Hospital). Two Unimas Surgeons also committed in helping with the daily workloads and oncall. With the increasing number of Medical Officers that interested in Surgery, thus enable the surgical services running well throughout the year. In the year under review, the Surgical Department staff strengths stand at: 13 Surgeons, 30 Medical Officers and 5 Master Surgical Candidates with the aim of to reduce morbidity and mortality related surgery. 3.2 Nursing Unfortunately the increase in nursing manpower did not keep in tandem with the rise in the subspecialty services provided and subsequent rise in the workload. The necessity of mechanically ventilating patients due to shortage of ICU beds imposed severe strain on our overworked staff nurses. Overcrowding of the ward with extra beds in every cubicle also contributed to the work stress. Despite the limitations, the staff tries to cope and provide good care to patients.
140
3.3 Training and Courses Keeping oneself updated frequently is important in order to provide the best care to our patients. Attending training courses and conferences is part of essential continuing medical education. Most of the conferences are held in Peninsular Malaysia and transportation was very costly but with the help of Modal Insan and Sponsorship, doctors and nurses were able to participate. Most of the Surgeons were also involved in training the Masters Candidates as well as UNIMAS Medical Students, where they were appointed as UNIMAS Adjunct Lecturers. The Visiting Team (Vascular and Breast & Endocrine) also involved in taking classes during their visits. 4. Courses organized by Surgical Department in Year 2017 Refer to Table 1 5. (also collaborate with NGO- Pink Ribbon Support Group Kuching)
Nutrition Support Team (NST) Neuroendocrine Awareness Team (NET) PPLASH @ SHISEH (Society For Higher Surgical Education Hospital Umum Sarawak) Sarawak Trauma Life Support Team
6. The Future Plans Of General Surgical Department at SGH 6.1 To establish the proper Day Care Centre as an individual unit to reduce the workload of cases that can be performed as day care (currently the centre still under construction and in progress)
6.2 To improve the scope and level of expertise offered in the field of Colorectal, Upper GI and Breast & Endocrine Surgery especially in regards of Laparoscopic @ Minimally Invasive Surgery. Hope by year 2018, complete subspeciality units (except Vascular) will be established under one roof as SGH is a tertiary center for referral. 6.3 To encourage and train more medical officers in the field of General Surgery especially those in the postgraduate (Masters) training program, by giving them chance to attend courses and workshops.
