Vocabulary:The Reformation

1. Reformation (1517): a reform movement against the Roman Catholic Church to fix Church problems

• People called on the Church to end corruption and focus instead on religion.

The Church was focused on making money, not on helping people!

2. indulgence:a document sold by the Catholic Church that people bought to be free of sin. A way that the Church made lots of money

Priests selling indulgences to people

3. purgatory:in Catholic teaching, a place where souls went before they went to heaven. An Indulgence “frees” people from here.

In this picture you can see Catholics praying for the souls who are waiting to go to heaven. In order to avoid hell the souls at the bottom of the picture are waiting for their loved ones to pray them out of purgatory.

4. Martin Luther:German monk who started the Reformation by nailing a list of complaints (95 theses) about the Catholic Church to a church door

Luther’s 95 theses was his 95 reasons he believed the Catholic Church was corrupt. He saw indulgences as wrong and want to put an end to it. He also believed the people should be able to read the Bible for themselves.
