Dear Friends,
At United our hearts are overflowing with thanksgiving to God for the great generosity of our trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni/ae and friends. As St. Paul wrote about his friends in Corinth, we too pray that you all will be enriched in every way for your great generosity.
Total gifts to United for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016, were more than $2.2 million, compared to total gifts of $700,000 for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2015. This $1.5 million increase was largely due to the success of our Second Mile giving campaign and those who joined us in expecting a miracle. Thanks be to God for your faith and generous giving!
We are also thankful to all the United Methodist churches around the nation who paid their apportionments this past year. United Theological Seminary
received $1,069,000 from apportionment gifts to support the education of the next generation of faithful and fruitful pastors and church leaders at United.
Because of your generosity, United ended the fiscal year on June 30, 2016, with a positive balance on hand. Thank you to all who made this possible!
Callie Picardo Vice President for Development
You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous in every way. Such generosity produces thanksgiving to God through us. Your ministry of this service to God's people isn't only fully meeting their needs but it is also multiplying in many expressions of thanksgiving to God. 2 Corinthians 9:11–12
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles. Isaiah 40:31

Looking Ahead: 2016 – 2017Dr. Kent Millard
This Fall, we launched the United: Where Dreams Take Flight scholarship campaign to raise $600,000 for student scholarships.
United Theological Seminary shares an amazing history with the Wright Brothers. Bishop Milton Wright encouraged his sons Wilbur and Orville to dream and experiment, which led to the creation of their flying machine in Dayton, Ohio. Bishop Wright also had a dream to help pastors and church leaders follow God's dream for their lives, so he founded United Theological Seminary in 1871.
In a recent book on the Wright brothers, author David McCullough shares the story of the first time Bishop Wright went up in a plane with his son Orville. He loved it so much, he kept challenging his son, saying, “Higher Orville! Higher!”
As Bishop Wright encouraged the dreams of his sons and challenged them to fly ever higher, that is our goal at United. Our call is to empower students to “hope in the LORD … renew their strength … [and] soar on wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31). God has placed a call and a dream on the hearts of each of our students, and, through practical training and investing in the spiritual formation of our students, United is helping them take flight.
Your gifts make this possible. Our goal this year is to raise $600,000 for scholarships to reduce student indebtedness. Imagine trying to fly with a huge weight tied around your neck. On the 2015-16 survey* of United graduates, 56% of respondents indicated they incurred $40,000 or more in educational debt during seminary, yet a starting pastor usually receives about $40,000 in annual income in their first assignment. Your gifts reduce the cost of tuition and provide scholarships for students to minimize the burden of debt weighing them down when they graduate. You help them soar higher and higher!
Thank you for considering a gift to the 2016–2017 Scholarship Campaign to help our students' dreams take flight!

Isaiah 40:31
1516
On October 11, 1871, United Theological Seminary (then called Union Biblical Seminary) began its inaugural academic year, in borrowed classrooms at Home Street United Brethren in Christ Church (Dayton).
Exactly 145 years later, on October 11, 2016, United Theological Seminary was privileged to dedicate the newly completed Richard A. and Nancy Zimmerman Chapel, a permanent worship space on the seminary's campus at 4501 Denlinger Road, Dayton.
The construction of the new chapel was made possible through the generosity of Dick and Nancy Zimmerman, who devoted themselves to the mission and vision of United for more than 30 years. Their commitment has been made visible through their leadership, encouragement, generosity and unfailing devotion. For twenty years, Dick served on United's Board of Trustees, acting as Chair of the Board for eight of those years.
Dick was a wise businessman and served as CEO of The Hershey Company in Hershey, PA, for many years. He shared that acumen and leadership with United.
When he passed away in 2014, Dick left a legacy of worship through a generous bequest to provide a permanent chapel at United. Nancy devoted additional funds and guidance to the project to ensure that the worship space will be best suited to the needs of the seminary, both now and in the future.
During the dedication service, Mrs. Zimmerman expressed her joy, saying, “No seminary is complete without a place of worship, a place for students to hone their preaching skills, and, most importantly, a place to just quietly meditate and feel closer to God.”
We are incredibly grateful to Dick and Nancy for their friendship, leadership and generosity, and for ensuring that United would continue to be a place that educates students academically and spiritually for years to come.
Donor Spotlight: Dick and Nancy Zimmerman
Joy and Peter Zimmerman, Jan Tulli, Nancy Zimmerman, Linda Billmyer, Hillary Marotta and President Kent Millard.
Rev. Dr. Ed Zeiders, former United president (2000-2008), shares a message on Christian identity.
Dr. David Watson, Academic Dean, leads the congregation in a personal prayer of dedication.
Architectural elements of the chapel reveal the three persons of the Holy Trinity: (left) God the Father, shown by a hand over the waters of creation (center) God the Son, represented through a cross designed with wood from United's property (right) God the Spirit, depicted as a dove radiating God's love, joy and peace.

Honor and Memorial GiftsUnited Theological Seminary welcomes gifts “in honor of” or “in memory of” loved ones and persons who played significant roles in the lives of people. This offers the donor the opportunity not only to honor or memorialize a loved one, but also to receive a charitable deduction and support the seminary's mission. The following are the gifts so designated and received by United during the period of July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2016. Gifts have been made in memory or in honor of names in bold. The donors for those gifts are listed under each name.

1516
The community of Ferguson, MO, became the source of national attention on August 9, 2014, when a white police officer fatally shot Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old African American man. As civil unrest and protests began in the community, a five-year-old church plant was prepared to provide hope and healing.
Rev. Dr. F. Willis Johnson '11 pastors Wellspring United Methodist Church, Ferguson, MO. Located less than half a block from the local police station, the church was in position to respond to the grieving community with the love of Christ.
More important than Wellspring's location, however, were the attitudes and ministries already in place. The church's social and cultural impact on their community had opened the doors for their ministry in this crisis to be radically effective.
Johnson leads his congregation to see that church is much more than Sunday worship. It has to extend beyond the four walls of a building.
“[It is] less about church and more about living out the very expressions and precepts of our faith and the spiritual heritage of the Wesleyan spirit,” Johnson explains, “which is one of engaging in context, wrestling and questioning, openness and exploration.”
Wellspring UMC has courageously sought to be the very presence of Christ in real time and space.
“We are willing to go into places and have conversations that maybe other people don't want to have,” Johnson says. “We are willing to meet people wherever they feel God is or isn't and in whatever language that is.”
Because of their determination to take the church into the community, when the events of August 9 occurred,
the church already had partnerships in place with local schools, allowing them the opportunity to provide educational respite and support to parents in a critical time.
The church was also known in the community as a place for social resources, and they were readily equipped in the hours after August 9 to provide counselors and crisis prevention specialists.
Johnson shares, “We weren't doing new things. We were doing things we had seeded sometime before, and these events gave amplification and magnification to that.”
Johnson's ministerial vision stems from the deep calling to serve in community. His understanding of what it looks like to live that out was nurtured and refined at United.
“My time at United really challenged me. It was a safe place to wrestle with questions,” he says.
His work in the Doctor of Ministry program gave him the theoretical and intellectual organization to lead an urban church plant in an African American context. The focus on social justice and political action guides his approach to ministry as a United graduate.
“I continue to be challenged by the United community and its scholars to see the world as a laboratory as well as my parish.”
As Wellspring UMC and the community of Ferguson, MO remain committed to a vision of justice, Johnson is inspired by the story of the men who brought the paralytic to Jesus. It is a story of those who assembled to carry a hurt human being to a place of help and hope. While their actions made an impact, they did no more and no less than hold up their corner.
This has become Johnson's mantra: “The best that I do, the least that I can do is to hold up my corner.”
Rev. Dr. F. Willis Johnson is the author of the forthcoming book Holding Up Your Corner: Talking about Race in Your Community (Abingdon Press, January 2017). Learn more at www.holdingupyourcorner.com.

Anthony Le Donne, Associate Professor of New Testament
Near Christianity: How Journeys along Jewish-Christian Borders Saved My Faith in God
This is book is an exploration of Christianity alongside Jewish guides who are well-studied in and sympathetic to Christianity, but only ever “near Christianity.” Not only did the borders created by Jews and Judaism help to define early Christianity, even today dialogue with Jewish teachers continues to reveal the very heart of Christian identity. Using his journey within historical Jesus research and New Testament studies, Anthony Le Donne illustrates the value in continued Jewish guidance for the Christian life. With the help of Jewish friends and mentors, he has embraced a deeper and more complex Christian faith and gained a better vision of the beauty and genius of Christianity, but also of its warts and failings. A Companionable Way: Path of Devotion in Conscious Love
In today's polarized publics, we are rarely prepared to encounter one another peaceably and deeply across irreconcilable difference. A Companionable Way invites inquisitive minds, body-souls, and spiritual hearts into the delightful but demanding inner work required for peaceable encounters with integrity across interreligious and intercultural difference. Part memoir of a deep-feeling academic, part toolbox for the curiously contemplative, A Companionable Way witnesses to the deeply rooted Sacred available to each of us in a return to the body, devotion in conscious love, and new ways of being human together across irreconcilable difference, held gently in a patient and living wisdom particular to each but needed by all. (Wipf and Stock, September 2016)
A Wesleyan Theology of the Eucharist: The Presence of God for Christian Life and Ministry
This new resource from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of The United Methodist Church addresses the importance of Holy Communion from the perspective of contemporary Wesleyan theologians. Andrew Sung Park, Professor of Theology and Ethics, offers a reflection on “Sin, Han, and Eucharist.” Richard Eslinger, Professor Emeritus of Worship and Homiletics, shares a chapter on “Eucharist and Evangelism.” A Wesleyan Theology of the Eucharist is available on Amazon.com and Cokesbury.com. Ministering in Crisis: Flint, MIDaniel Moore, M.Div. '15
How do you take the church outside of the four walls of its building?
Daniel Moore (M.Div. '15) has been working on that for the last eight years as pastor of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Flint, MI.
When Moore arrived in 2008, the church needed a lot of work. The congregation of about 60 was divided, impoverished and uninterested in outreach. Minimal maintenance had been provided for the church building, erected in the 1920s, or its properties. On top of everything, the church had over $100,000 in debt.
Knowing he needed wisdom and counsel, Moore approached fellow Flint pastor, Rev. Dr. Major Stewart. A 2004 graduate of United's Doctor of Ministry program, Dr. Stewart encouraged Moore to pursue seminary and to consider United.
“All I knew about pastoring was preaching on Sunday, counselling people, loving the people. I had a
heart for the community, but I had no idea how to do it,” Moore explains. “The Church Renewal classes and the Evangelism classes [at United] really helped me focus on how to bring the church outside the four walls of the building… It changed my perspective of what the ministry of the Church really is.”
Through a lot of prayer and hard-work, the people of Shiloh started to turn the church around. In the first year and a half, they paid off all their debt. Using the capital campaign tools he learned in his Church Stewardship and Finance course at United, Moore then led the congregation through small campaigns to support long-needed renovations. They monitored their budget by paying cash for everything.
Now with financial security and a unified vision, the church started reaching out to the surrounding community. When the water crisis came to light in 2014, Shiloh was the first church to buy bottled water to distribute to the community. It caught on. Churches and organizations across the country began sending water and volunteers to Shiloh. Soon, they were giving out more water than the American Red Cross!
While national attention has waned, Flint water remains undrinkable. According to Moore, out of 15,000 lead lines that need replacing, only 20 had been replaced as of August 2016.
As the water crisis has continued, the church has become a light in the community. Twice per week volunteers distribute water door-to-door, giving
out 700 cases of water in a day to those in poverty and people unable to leave their homes.
In the midst of ongoing crisis, Moore and his congregation are encouraged by the testimonies of those they encounter.
“These are real people who are struggling in this crisis,” he says. “Bringing water and baby wipes is such a small thing, but it is such a blessing to them.”
Moore leans on Matthew 25 for encouragement as well. Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink… whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
As the church lives into their new outward-focused mission, the community has responded. Membership has grown from 60 to 250, with approximately 140 in weekly attendance.
Moore and his church are getting attention for helping with the Flint water crisis, but he says anyone can make a difference in their community.
“Find a need and fill it. This is a need that showed up at our door — and it changed our whole focus of our ministry,” Moore says. “If you stay in tune to what is happening in your community…, God will open the door for you to minister.”
