Overview of the proposedInstitutional Links collaboration• Working title of the Institutional Links collaboration*
No more than 200 characters.
• Please give a short summary in plain English of the Institutional Links collaboration and the
research/innovation area(s) to be covered. This should be a statement for a non-specialist audience,
giving the rationale of the collaboration and briefly summarising its potential impact on economic
development and social welfare in the partner country.*
$he energy crisis is ma%or concern that the world&s face today due to the
limited natural resources. $he problem is continued to increase with
dimension in the resources that are used to power industrial society and
increases demands accordingly. $his raises the attraction toward the use of
renewable energy as alternative resources. $here are several alternative
renewable energy sources such as hydro power, wind power, bio mass,
geo thermal power and solar cells. 'arvesting energy from the sun is more
fascinating due to low cost, reliability, and stability the so called
Photovoltaic which mean a direct conversion of sunlight into electricity.
$he most common solar cells in the market today are single and poly
crystalline silicon solar cell but with the problem of very complicated
technology with very high cost. $his problem has addressed by researcher
through the use of thin (lm solar cells instead which has the advantages of not only law cost and materials economy but also very low weight per unit
power, simple ) sophisticated fabrication techni"ues and variety of
structures available.

We define 'impact' as short- to medium-term effects on a variety of stakeholders at different levels (i.e. individuals,
organisations, nations); changes that will occur as a result of your research project; the demonstrable contribution that
excellent research makes to society and the economy. No more than 1,000 characters.
• Partner country *
• Duration of collaboration (in weeks)*
• Proposed start date*
Pathway to economic developmentand social welfare
• In the following statement, please outline a plausible pathway showing (1) how the
research addressed by the collaboration may lead to positive impact on the lives of poor
populations in the partner country and (2) how it may contribute to the economic development
and social welfare of the partner country within a reasonable time frame (3-15 years). The
pathway statement should be focussed on potential tangible impacts and should beproject-
specific and not general.

More than *+ nationwide power stations have halted electricity

gas producer and e8porter, said in :ctober it had agreed to
import gas from 4lgeria and was in talks with ;atar over a
similar deal. -gypt witnessed several power failures last
summer due to shortage of fuel supply and the government has
insisted that the problem would not occur in the winter because
of less electricity consumption. 22 megawatts of energy.
-gypt is e8periencing one of its most serious energy crises for
decades, with parts of the country facing around si8 power cuts
a day for up to two hours at a time. $he blackouts have created
widespread frustration, with businesses reporting a downturn in
production and citiens complaining about the disruption to
everyday life. -arlier this year, electricity demand hit a record
daily high of 9?,?22 megawatts, 92@ more than powers stations
could provide, state media reported. But energy analysts havepredicted the shortage for some time, and blackouts were
already an issue well before the rise in militancy over the past
year. 4 ballooning population A which has increased by an
estimated * million in the past si8 months A and the intense
4ugust heat, which has caused a surge in air5conditioning
usage, means that demand now outstrips the capacity of
-gypt6s mainly gas5fuelled power stations. -gypt also faces a
problem of supply.

e#cient, abundance nature, non5to8icity, long term stability
and low cost solar cells.
:n the other hand, better absorption capabilities are
obtained using thick (lm solar cell due to its larger opticalpaths. -ven though wider spectral absorbance was obtained
by thick (lm devices, the overall photo current is reduced as
the minority carrier diusion length is several times the
material thickness. 3o the (lm thickness within small ranges
has been re"uired to collect the photo carriers. $hus,
increasing the absorption, short current and e#ciency of
photovoltaic solar cell is very important aspect which can be
achieved by the mean of light trapping. Minimiing thesurface reCection at the incident surface is very essential to
increase the e#ciency of the solar cell. 4t the same time, the
absorption through the active layer where photons are
absorbed has to be increased.

e#ciency. $he 3P resonance fre"uency of a metal particle can
be tuned across the ultra5violet, visible and near5infrared parts
of the electromagnetic spectrum through a choice of its sie,
shape, and dielectric environment. $his notion has enabled
broadband enhancements of the photocurrent across the wide
solar spectrum. apid developments in this area were founded
upon initial, convincing demonstrations that plasmonic eects
are capable of boosting e#ciency. Key to demonstrating the
importance of plasmonics in enhancing solar cell e#ciency
was the presence of characteristic plasmonic features in the
photocurrent spectra from cells with metallic nanostructures.

• Please position your proposal within the existing scientific literature and explain its
significance.*• The proposed project deal with advanced and innovative themes in the field of the solar
energy harvesting. The project aimed to develop a new way of increasing light absorption in
solar cells using new nanotechnologies such as plasmonic nanostructures, nanowires and
quantum dots. These nanotechnologies offer a promising method of increasing efficiencies
and reducing costs in thin solar cells, which make up the most rapidly growing section of the
solar cell market.
