TRADE REPRESENTATION AT AUTOSPORT INTERNATIONAL AND AUTOSPORT ENGINEERING PRESS PACKFor 25 years Autosport International has brought together international and national leaders from the high-performance engineering sector, to network and view the latest technology on the eve of the new motorsport season.
In 2012, Britain’s Motorsport Valley generated £9 billion in sales, up from £4.6 billion in 2000, in figures compiled by the Motorsport Industry Association. The community goes well beyond being home to the majority of the teams in Formula 1, comprising over 4,300 companies and employing over 41,000 people.
Autosport International’s role as the industry’s principal showcase is evident through its growing audience; almost 28,000 motorsport professionals attended Autosport International 2014, while 600 companies globally were present exhibiting. With 150 firms having exhibited at the maiden show in 1991, it highlights not only the growth of the event, but also the industry as a whole.
Quarter of a decade on, the event’s presence really is a catalyst for global automotive engineering opportunities. With low and ultra-low carbon vehicle technologies vital for the growth of the UK automotive sector, this year will host the premier Low Carbon Racing and Automotive Show (LCRA), which will take place alongside Autosport International.
The show has also provided a platform for countless launches during its history, and recent years have seen several emerging UK manufacturers reveal new projects. This year, guests will have the opportunity to catch first sight of the new flagship model from British manufacturer Radical Sportscars, the SR8 RSX, which is set to offer a value-packed dose of Le Mans Prototype-esque performance with a power-to-weight ratio of 558hp/tonne. Capping 12 months of development, Zenos Cars will launch its new E10 S, featuring a 250bhp turbocharged, 2.0-litre Ford EcoBoost engine and windscreen.
Joining them is an extensive list of companies from across the globe, including industry leaders ATL Fuel Cells, Brembo S.p.A., DC Electronics, AP Racing, M-Sport, Ohlins Racing AB, Quaife Engineering, Wirth Research, Zircotec, and many more.

Sports car legends Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish attended, while Ford showed off its 2012 World Rally Championship challenger and Lola Group and Drayson Racing Technologies (DRT) launched its ground-breaking Lola-Drayson B12/69EV all-electric prototype racing car.
Former Formula 1 driver and BBC F1 pundit Martin Brundle attended Autosport International with his on-screen colleague Jake Humphrey. The F1 attractions continued with the unveiling of Lotus Renault GP’s black and gold livery by driver Vitaly Petrov and racing legend Jean Alesi. The new road-going McLaren MP4-12C headlined a fantastic display of McLaren machinery, including Ayrton Senna’s MP4/4 and Lewis Hamilton’s MP4-23. Meanwhile, a host of car launches took place, including the Ginetta G55, Porsche’s GT3-R Hybrid and Škoda UK Motorsport’s 2011 Fabia S2000 for the Intercontinental Rally Challenge.
Led by one of sport’s true legends, Autosport International’s 2013 line-up featured three-time Formula 1 World
Champion Sir Jackie Stewart alongside Sahara Force India Formula 1 Team driver Paul Di Resta and newly-crowned FIA World Touring Car Champion Rob Huff and British Touring Car Champion Gordon Shedden. With a total of 12 wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans between them, Derek Bell, Emanuele Pirro and Allan McNish shared their stories with sports car fans. Tribute was also paid to 2001 World Rally Champion Richard Burns with a seven-car display including the Subaru Impreza WRC-S7SRT used by Burns in 2001 to become just the second British driver to win the World Rally Championship. 2014

The 2010 show saw Jenson Button appearing as the newly-crowned Formula 1 World Champion, after
a sensational season with the Brawn GP outfit that rose from the ashes of the Honda Racing F1 Team. The 2010 show also celebrated 60 years of Autosport magazine, ‘the motorsport bible’, and saw PistonHeads: The Performance Car Show going from strength-to-strength, with a total of 85,000 visitors attending the show across the four days.
The late, and much loved, Colin McRae was remembered with a special rally feature at the 2008 show. British Touring Car racing celebrated 50 years of competition. As ever Prodrive produced an exhibiting innovation, building its brand new Group N Subaru Impreza rally car on its stand while the show carried on around it! Among the drivers to visit the show in 2008 were Jenson Button, David Coulthard, Mark Webber, Marcus Grönholm, Andy Priaulx, Fabrizio Giovanardi and many more.
A line-up of previous winning cars of the Le Mans 24 Hours celebrated 75 years of the classic race. The Bentley
Blower of the 1920s, the legendary Gulf Porsche, the famous Rothmans Porsche associated with Derek Bell’s victories, the fan-favourite Silk Cut Jaguar, right up to the highly-successful Audi R8: the glorious history of Le Mans was there for all to see. Among the previous winners of the race to visit the display were ‘Mr Le Mans’ himself, Tom Kristensen, alongside Derek Bell, Allan McNish, Guy Smith, Johnny Dumfries Andy Wallace and David Brabham. Showcased from Prodrive was the Aston Martin DBR9, which ran at Le Mans in Live Action.
David Coulthard’s 14-year career as a Formula 1 driver came to an end in 2008, and the Scot was honoured at
Autosport International with a display of cars he had raced. The collection, from his own museum, had everything from his first kart to the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car that he finished his F1 racing days with. Le Mans winner Allan McNish was a visitor, along with his Audi team-mates Frank Biela, Tom Kristensen and Emanuele Pirro, and from rallying came former World Rally Champion Petter Solberg.

The first records of a ‘Grand Prix’ are from 1906, and to mark the centenary, Autosport International featured 28 landmark cars from the Donington Park Grand Prix Collection. The display was bookended by Renaults, the 1906 grand prix-winning Alpine AK90CV at one end, and Fernando Alonso’s 2005 title-winning R26 at the other. The owner of the Donington Grand Prix Collection, Tom Wheatcroft, invited Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to the Sid Watkins Lecture, and guided him through the 100 Years of Grand Prix display.
The Galleria Ferrari exhibition was a highlight in 2004, with Ferrari overseeing the official feature. Eight
road and racing versions of the legendary Italian marque were on display, including four of Michael Schumacher’s machines. The German won five of his world championship titles behind the wheel of one of the emotive scarlet racers. Continuing the Formula One theme, BAR Honda had its full F1 paddock set-up on display, including its team transporter, awning and car, plus an appearance from driver Jenson Button and reserve driver Anthony Davidson.
A generous handful of Formula 1 drivers visited the show in January 2003. Toyota had its line-up of Olivier Panis,
Cristiano da Matta and Ricardo Zonta with da Matta also present in his capacity as the 2002 Champ Car Champion. Jaguar’s F1 team of Mark Webber and Antonio Pizzonia were there, along with Jordan’s new signing. For the two-wheel fans British Superbike Champion Neil Hodgson was on-hand as he prepared to step up to the World Superbike Championship with Ducati. Besides the stars, Citroen and Subaru both had stands centred on their World Rally Championship participation.
His Royal Highness Prince Andrew opened Autosport International in 2005 in his role as a British Trade and Industry representative, recognising the importance of the motorsport industry to the British economy. The British round of the World Rally Championship took centre stage with the introduction of the Wales Rally GB feature. The display was a stage recreation that featured a mock-up service-park and included the contenders from Citroën, Ford and Subaru. That year the show also saw the first appearance of the Historic Hall with the Coys car auction and historic championship displays.

The F1 Racing Grid made its first appearance at the show, featuring one car from each team that
competed in the 2001 Formula 1 World Championship. The F1 display, which evolved from a single car/pit garage set-up into a pitlane, now involved the entire grid. It proved to be a very popular part of Autosport International, and has been ever since. The 1992 F1 World Champion Nigel Mansell was a star guest, while Jean Alesi, who had just ended his illustrious F1 career, was another of the many visitors alongside David Coulthard, Mark Blundell, Colin McRae, James Thompson and future Formula 1 and driver Justin Wilson.
To start the millennium with a bang, Mercedes-Benz chose Autosport International to launch its all-new
CLK coupé that was set to race in the rejuvenated German Touring Car Championship, best known as DTM. The car went on to win the championship that year, in the hands of Bernd Schneider, while his team mates, Peter Dumbreck and Darren Turner were at the NEC throughout the show. The Group B rally cars were also stars in the Live Action Arena, with the legendary Markku Alen demonstrating Lancia’s Delta HF and Stratos machines.
In 1999 Autosport International hosted the very public launch of the British American Racing F1 team,
with race driver Ricardo Zonta and test driver Mika Salo present. Jacques Villeneuve was later confirmed as the team’s second driver. The F1 theme continued, with guests including Benetton’s Giancarlo Fisichella, new Williams signing Alex Zanardi, and Sauber’s Jean Alesi. Team owner Eddie Jordan was the subject of a celebration evening, which in typical Jordan style included live music and plenty of informal fun. Elsewhere, Ford launched its new World Rally Championship Focus that was to be driven by former World Champion, Colin McRae.
Champ Car champion and Indianapolis 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya was the star guest of 2001, the Columbian being revealed as Williams-BMW’s newest signing. Montoya opened Autosport International together with F1 commentator Murray Walker. For the first time, bikes had their own dedicated section of the show with the BikeSport area, which featured stands from Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki, plus a British Superbike series display by Red Bull Ducati. Two-wheel legend Carl Fogarty was a star of the show, entertaining fans on stage and in the Live Action Arena. The MIA introduced its now annual Awards Dinner in 2001.

A tribute to the late, great Ayrton Senna, who had tragically lost his life four years earlier, was the centrepiece of the show. The display was opened by Senna’s sister, Viviane, and featured eight cars, including his 1988 championship-winning McLaren. Also from Formula 1 was Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine, who opened the show. Defending British Touring Car Champion Alain Menu was heading into his fifth and final season with Renault and the car had its official public unveiling at Autosport International. Rally fans were also able to see the brand new Toyota Corolla rally car unveiled for Carlos Sainz and Didier Auriol’s 1998 season in which Spaniard Sainz would go on to become championship runner-up.
In 1996 Autosport International hosted the launch of Britain’s newest Formula 1 team: Stewart Grand Prix. Triple World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart already had a place in F1’s history books, and he chose to meet the world’s press with his son Paul to announce their partnership with Ford and launch Stewart Grand Prix. Elsewhere Le Mans sports car fans had a mouth-watering feast of Jaguars to savour in a display highlighting the cars that made the manufacturer’s name so special at the blue riband 24 hour race. In the Live Action Arena, future World Rally Champion Richard Burns wowed the crowds with his mixture of spectacular speed and sublime car control. Autosport Engineering, aimed at the needs of the motorsport industry and its suppliers, made its debut in 1996.
In 1995 Goodyear chose Autosport International for a global marketing conference, and invited all of its worldwide distributors to a special gala dinner celebrating 300 F1 wins for Goodyear. The centrepiece was an entire hall showcasing more than 50 cars that had won F1 races on Goodyear tyres, from its first with Richie Ginther’s Honda in the 1960s, up to Michael Schumacher’s championship-winning Benetton from 1994. Visitors to this Goodyear Hall of Fame were also able to view rarely-seen F1 machinery, including the Brabham ‘fan car’, a couple of Jackie Stewart’s Tyrrells, James Hunt’s McLaren, along with many championship-winning Grand Prix cars.
Fresh from clinching the 1996 Formula 1 World Championship, Damon Hill’s switch to Arrows was front page news, and the TWR Arrows team chose Autosport International to unveil its new car and driver. The partnership’s best result was a second place in Hungary that year after a mechanical failure in the closing laps cost Hill and the team a memorable, and fairytale, Grand Prix win. Also launched at the show was the Panoz Esperante GTR-1, quite possibly the loudest sportscar racer ever built. The evocative 6.0-litre front-engined car was known as the Batmobile after its unusual design that drew comparison to the famous comic book character’s car. TV star, and sometime racer, Noel Edmonds, who had an interest in the Panoz GT programme, was on the Autosport stage.

It’s fair to say that Autosport International cemented its global reputation by hosting a special tribute dinner for retiring motor racing great Mario Andretti, a winner of the F1 World Championship, Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Daytona 500. Guests who paid tribute to the legend include: Michele Alboreto; his 1981 Alfa Romeo team-mate, Bruno Giacomelli; wife of Lotus founder Colin Chapman, Hazel Chapman; Mario’s ex-Lotus mechanic, Bob Dance, and Team Manager Peter Warr. But the 1994 show had not one, but two, of America’s racing legends. NASCAR’s greatest ever driver, ‘The King’ Richard Petty also made a rare trip outside the U.S. to Birmingham.
Building on the foundations laid at the NEC the previous year, the first seal of approval of the show’s potential came from the newly-elected FIA President, Max Mosley. Mark Blundell was among them, fresh from his first season as a Grand Prix driver with Brabham, and for 1993 had signed as McLaren’s test driver alongside Ayrton Senna and Michael Andretti, as well as racing for Peugeot in sportscars, where he won the 1993 24 Hours of Le Mans. This was the start of things to come for current drivers, where an appearance at Autosport International became the traditional start to each season. BBC commentary duo Murray Walker and James Hunt were again popular crowd pleasers in their roles as resident F1 experts, and their interviews were as thoroughly entertaining as they were politically incorrect!
The inaugural Autosport International occupied three halls at the NEC, welcoming 150 exhibitors and just over
30,000 visitors during the four days of the show. One of the first companies to recognise the potential of the show was Prodrive, and it was during this first show that Prodrive met a young Colin McRae who was looking to further his career in rallying. The Scot subsequently drove for the team, winning the British Rally Championship in 1991 and 1992 and thereafter embarking on a campaign in the Legacy and Impreza from 1992 in the World Rally Championship, culminating in him winning the world title in 1995.
The main feature in 1993 was a celebration of Team Tyrrell. Ten of Tyrrell’s cars were on display, headed
by Jackie Stewart’s 1973 championship-winning 006. That year also marked the first Champion Engine Pavilion, and attracted well-known engine builders and manufacturers; the most famous being Cosworth, who in January 1993 launched its then-new HB F1 engine, to be used by both Benetton and McLaren in the 1993 Formula 1 World Championship. Other significant engine manufacturers who used the pavilion included Swindon Racing Engines, Millington Racing Engines, and Wilcox to name but a few. Xtrac, who had just been presented with the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement, participated in the show for the first time.
