Dear Friends in Christ:
Quí Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến trong Chúa Kitô:
Estimados Amigos y Amigas en Cristo:
Would you be so kind as to come here…? I received
an invitation to accompany 5 Legion of Mary members to
Lourdes, France. The Houston group included 2 members
from the Co-Cathedral, all to help in the Lourdes Apostolate.
We arrived in Lourdes on Pentecost Sunday, May 20th.
Lourdes is a major pilgrimage site where the Blessed Mother
appeared to St. Bernadette in 1858 and where people come
for prayer, the sacrament of penance and healing.
We stayed at the Legion of Mary house called the Perma-
nence that originally belonged to the great niece of St. Ber-
nadette. The caretaker of the house was a legionary from
Italy. We quickly became multicultural as 4 members from
Dublin joined us. This is when I wished I had taken my
French Language course in High School seriously. Each day
began with Morning Prayer and Mass followed by breakfast
and then the Legion meeting where the goals and functions
of the apostolate were clearly explained.
Working in pairs, there were many assignments to keep
everyone busy from sunrise to sunset. Besides basic house
duties and receiving visitors in the reception room, legionar-
ies are invited to assist in the Lourdes apostolate by inviting
holiday campers and people they meet in the near vicinity to
visit the grotto. Not everyone in the area was aware of the
beautiful spiritual oasis that exists and most were very happy
to accept a leaflet that we had available in 6 different lan-
guages about the Blessed Mother and her message to St.
Bernadette. We also met a number of pilgrims that were not
Catholic, some not Christian, that were on their way to the
grotto. Participating in the daily procession of the Blessed
Sacrament and the evening Marian procession with the Le-
gion of Mary Banner and illuminated standard of the Legion
called the Vexillum, was another part of the apostolate.
Of all these devotional experiences, the most impressive
sight was seeing the number of young people volunteering to
assist those in wheelchairs to participate in the processions.
This was a great opportunity to pray the Rosary with people
in different languages. I felt the beauty of our faith expressed
in the long processions, filled by beautiful Latin songs, and
many bishops, priests, nuns and people from everywhere.
Along the river one can sit and gaze at the grotto where
Our Lady appeared to Bernadette and on March 25, 1858 she
said, “I am the Immaculate Conception”. This was a refresh-
ing time for me to pray especially for those who supported
my pilgrimage, to go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and
to pray the Stations of the Cross by actually walking up the
hill that was beautifully designed for this experience.
It was an enlightening moment for me to accept the fact
that I had overcome my concerns of having jet lag and fear of
traveling for such a long time having just returned from my
father’s burial in Nigeria. I was not as tired as I had thought.
Rather, I was excited to join this pilgrimage. I truly felt that
accepting this invitation to accompany the legionaries to
Lourdes was God’s plan. In the words of St. Bernadette, Our
Lady who appeared to her said, “Would you be so kind as to
come here for 15 days. I do not promise to make you happy
in this world, but in the other.”
Many of you have already heard the story of how Our
Lady asked Bernadette to “Go and drink at the spring”. The
opportunity to bathe in the pure spring water or to wash one’s
face or drink from the fountains is available to all. Some
bathed, some washed, and all of us drank daily of the pure
spring water. It is a spiritual oasis that words fail to describe.
Traveling to Paris for our return flight, we spent the last 2
days in France visiting Notre Dame, Chapel of the Miracu-
lous Medal, Church of St. Vincent de Paul, and the Basilica
of Sacre Coeur, (Sacred Heart). Sacre Coeur has had continu-
ous Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for over 100 years.
We all had a memorable experience.
Once again, I say thank you to all who were so kind to
help me go to Lourdes and during my 3 year ministry assign-
ment here at the Co-Cathedral.

Homily Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of
God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light
from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, con-
substantial with the Father; through Him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from Heaven,
(We all are to make a bow of the body during the next 2 lines.)
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered
death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in ac-
cordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in
glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will
have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the
Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken
through the Prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. E
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look for-
ward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to
come.
Amen.

SIGNIFICANCE of BOWING
A bow signifies reverence and honor shown to the names or event being mentioned. We are to do the following:
1) A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons (the Trinity) are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being celebrated.
2) A bow of the body (a profound bow) is made during the Creed with the words (and by the Holy Spirit…and became man—highlighted in
red words in the Creed). —General Instruction to the Roman Missal, #275

A responsorial psalm at Communion? Yes! We invite you to join us in prayer . The antiphon above is to be sung by the assembly;
the cantor and choir will lead you, and chant psalm verses in between your “refrains.” The choir dialogues with you today to follow the preference
of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM). GIRM Article 87 lists the first options for singing during the reception of Communion as (1) the antiphon from the [Roman] Missal or the antiphon with its Psalm from the Graduale Romanum, as set to music there or in another musical setting....This is sung either by the choir alone or by the choir or a cantor with the people.
FACES of CO-CATHEDRAL MUSIC
Meet a Choir Member!
Interview with Melanie Smith (alto) - Part I
Did you have any singing experience before joining Cor Jesu?
I became involved in music at a young age. My parents were great lovers of music and theater and supported
our (my sisters and I) interest in voice and instrumental education. Our Catholic grade school didn’t have a
school or church choir, but I played clarinet in concert band starting in second grade and continued through high school and college.
I joined choir in high school, but in college, I only had time for one music elective so I played clarinet with concert band for a couple
of years. I continued to sing by joining the choir at the church I attended. This was the 70’s, and the contemporary music really
engaged me and kept me involved at church.

Dear Parishioners:
Only 1½ weeks ago did we learn that Fr. Tony is being transferred. As of July 1,
Fr. Tony will be the pastor of The Bells of St. Mary / The Church of the Immaculate
Conception at 103 S. Broadway, Yonkers, NY, 10701, with another priest as his
parochial vicar. Yes, it is a quick change. But priests are sent when and where we are
needed to serve the People of God.
Fr. Tony has been here for the last 3 years as our parochial vicar. I am most
grateful for his presence and service here at the Co-Cathedral. We wish him well as
he re-locates and transitions to a new ministerial assignment. This weekend is his last
weekend with us. Please sign his Farewell Books in the narthex and greet Fr. Tony
after Mass. And pray for him in his new assignment.
Fr. Lawrence W. Jozwiak
Pastor / Rector
P.S.: I do not know yet if and when we will receive a priest replacement.

Pope’s Prayer Intention: Universal – Social Networks
That social networks may work towards that inclusiveness which respects others for their differences.
To all our fellow Catholics, we urge an intensification of your prayers and fasting for a new birth of freedom in our beloved country. We invite you to join us in an urgent prayer for religious liberty.
Almighty God, Father of all nations, For freedom you have set us free in Christ Jesus (Gal 5:1). We praise and bless you for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice, and the common good. Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties; By your grace may we have the courage to defend them, for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land. We ask this through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness, and in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with whom you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Catholics across the United States are encouraged to pray and
act in support of religious liberty at home and abroad during
Serving Others in God's Love:
Religious Freedom Week 2018
Beginning on Friday, June 22, the Feast of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, and
Ending on Friday, June 29, the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul.
The chairman of the USCCB's Committee for Religious Liberty, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, states:
"Religious freedom allows the space for people of faith to serve others in God's love in ministries like education,
adoption and foster care, health care, and migration and refugee services. We encourage people of faith to reflect on the
importance of religious freedom so that we might have the space to carry out our mission of service and mercy, and we
invite everyone to pray for our brothers and sisters who face intense persecution in other parts of the world."
Serving Others in God's Love We are called to follow Christ as missionary disciples by serving others and living our faith in all that we do. Let us take a few moments each day from June 22 - June 29 to pray, reflect, and take action
on religious liberty, both here in this country and abroad.

SUNDAY’S GOSPEL —June 24, 2018 – Solemnity of the Nat iv i ty of
Saint John the Bapt ist
They were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother said…, “No. He will be
called John.” –Luke 1:59–60
What’s in a name? Often more than you think. Consider how your name, first and last, has been a help or hindrance to you. Have you changed or adapted your name to reflect new realities? How has the story of what you’ve called yourself, or been called, evolved? Old Zechariah had never had children, so when his wife gave birth in her advanced age, the relatives were eager to honor him and carry on his legacy by naming the child Zech-ariah Jr. It was a good family name meaning “God remembers.” Elizabeth wouldn’t have it! Her son, she knew, wasn’t about the past but was born to lead his generation into the future. A bold new way deserved a bold new name, something that hadn’t appeared in this family before. So the child’s name was John: “God is gracious.” Identity matters. Sometimes it’s set for life, and sometimes it needs to be reset many times, the way biblical folks often changed their names in the face of new circumstances. If your identi-ty feels uncomfortable, it may be time to consider what has to change.
Which aspects of your identity have remained through the years? Which ones have needed to shift or evolve?

Look up what your names mean in a reference book (baby
names). Do your names imply that you have a purpose
or connection to something else? How do your relation-
ships with God and his plan override that meaning? If
you could rename yourselves, how would you like to be
labeled as children of God?
When you chose or will choose your vocation, consider
how it glorifies God. Is there any remnant of ego in your
choice? Are you using your gifts and talents that God
gave you, or are you choosing your own interests? How
can you polish your purpose to glorify God and God
alone? Source: Our Sunday Visitor

Stewardship

Stewardship Reflection:
The Nativity of St. John the Baptist: June 24
That we turn our daily focus to God and others to develop a “God-centered” lifestyle.
“…Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.” – Acts 13:25
Stewardship is a lifestyle, it’s not a program or a process. It’s how we are called to live our lives twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week! It challenges us to live “God-centered” lives, not “self-centered” lives. Reflect on your daily activities, do you do them for the glory of God or for the glory of your own name?

He aquí
indica a otro. Todo el sentido de su vida está en indicar a otro.
Él mismo lo dice con claridad al hablar de su propia misión: Es
necesario que Él crezca y yo mengüe. Voz, no palabra; luz, pero
no propia, Juan parece ser nadie. He aquí desvelada la vocación
