Our Organization
Madison Water Utility began serving our
community in 1882, but today, we’re looking
toward the future. MWU is working to
protect the city’s critical water resources and
infrastructure through innovation, research,
technology, and outstanding customer service
and outreach. We were the first utility in the
state to use structural relining techniques to
rehabilitate deteriorating water mains. We
were the first large utility in the state to implement Advanced Metering Infrastructure technology.
And we were the first utility in the state to bring detailed, personalized water use data directly to our
customers online. Our research partnerships with the University of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin
Geological Survey provide us with a deeper understanding of our water system and aquifer,
supporting our mission to provide clean, safe, reliable water and fire protection for every person in
the city.
Our Community
Madison is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in the country. A flourishing restaurant
scene, more than 200 miles of bike paths and trails, excellent healthcare, a world renowned research
university, and five beautiful lakes make our community a thriving, vibrant place to call home.
But don’t just take our word for it…
