CNG VEHICLES

What is CNG?

• CNG – Compressed natural gas• It is a substitute fossil fuel for DIESEL, PETROL, PROPANE

LOGOS of CNG

Content

• Preparation• Importance• Advantages• Disadvantages• Solutions• Effects• Conclusion

PREPARATION

• It is made by compressing the natural gas to less than 1% of the volume at standard atmospheric pressure. It is stored in hard cylindrical containers at a pressure of 200-280 bars.

IMPORTANCE

• It is cheap than other fuels.• It is dispersed quickly when released.• It is lighter than air.• It releases less carbon in atmosphere.

COMPARISION OF PRICES

Types of Fuel Price in Rs.Petrol 63.72 Rs/Ltr

Diesel 54.27 Rs/Ltr

Autogas 53.36 Rs/Ltr

CNG 47.50 Rs/Kg

ADVANTAGES

• Due to absence of Lead and Benzene, pollution reduces.

• Low maintenance cost than other vehicle.• Increases the life of lubricating oil.• It mixes easily and evenly in air.• More efficiency.

CNG CARS• In cars several manufacturers(Fiat, Volkswagen,

Toyota, Honda and others) sell bi-fuel cars.• In 2016, “Fiat” introduced “Siena” tetra fuel car in

the Brazilian market, equippied with a 1.4L fire engine that runs on E100 E25, Gasoline and CNG.

CNG LOCOMOTIVE

• The “Napa Valley Wine Train” before 2002 and “Ferrocarril Central Andino” since 2005 are the locomotives ran on CNG.

CNG BIKES

• Argentinian company ZANELLA has launched a CNG powered bike. This is the first bike in the world to come with a factory fitted CNG power.

• Worlds First CNG Bike……

TOP 10 COUNTRIES WITH CNG VEHICLES

Country Number of NGV

1. Pakistan 22,50,100

2. Argentina 18,13,777

3. Iran 17,34,431

4. Brazil 16,31,173

5. India 7,00,000

6. Italy 5,87,577

7. China 5,00,000

8. Colombia 2,99,640

9. Ukraine 2,00,019

10. Bangladesh 2,00,000

EXAMPLE

• A petrol engine running for 100 Km emits 22,000 gram of CO2, for same distance CNG emits 16,725 gram of CO2

• CNG is essentially CH4 with a c.v. of 900 KJ/mol. Petrol is essentially C6H6 with a c.v. of 3,300 KJ/mol. So it gives less pollution.

DISADVANTAGES

• Gas storage in a car.

DISADVANTAGES

• CNG vehicles requires a greater amount of space for fuel storage than conventional gasoline powered vehicles.

SOLUTION

• Install the tank under the body of the vehicle leaving the trunk free.

Eg. Fiat Multipla, Volkswagen Touran Ecofuel, Volkswagen Caddy Ecofuel.

• Installation of tank on the roof (typical on Buses)

EFFECTS

CNG emits significantly less pollutants than petrol such as,

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Carbon Monoxide (CO) Unburned Hydrocarbons (UHC) Nitrogen Oxides (NOX) Sulphur Oxides (SOX)

CONCLUSION

• Due to these above reasons CNG is most useful for vehicles as fuel to reduce the pollution and it is cheap than other fuels like petrol and diesel.
