Lastsummer,ateamofelevencommunitydevelop-mentprofessionalsvisitedFairfield to evaluate eco-nomicdevelopment,infra-structureandrecreationalopportunitiesinthecom-munity.OnThursday,April14th,theteamwillreturntoCamasCountytopresenttheirfindings. This is a unique oppor-tunity for the residents ofFairfieldtoseetheircom-munitythroughtheeyesofindividualsfromoutsidethearea.ThegoaloftheCom-munityReviewistoprovidecommunitieswithobjectiveinformationfromdevelop-ment professionals, create

FairfieldCommunityReviewRoadworkOn U.S. 93

RehabilitatingfiveU.S.93bridgesbetweenShoshoneandCareywillrequireshortdelays this week for trafficateachlocation.TheIdahoTransportationDepartment’sbridgeworkwillensurestruc-turalsurfaceandintegritytoextendoverallbridgelife. Work began Monday,April11,attwobridgescross-ingtheLittleWoodRiverlocatedatmileposts199and200inBlaineCounty.Workon three other bridges isexpected to begin in May.ThosebridgesspantheMil-ner-GoodingCanalatmile-post167nearShoshone,theLittle Wood River at 177southofRichfieldandSilverCreekatmilepost198neartheLincoln/BlaineCountyLine.Workisexpectedtobecompletedbymid-June. TheIdahoTransportationBoardadvancedagroupof27 projects in 2015 usingfundsallocatedbytheIda-hoLegislatureforthestate’sfirsttransportation-revenueincrease in nearly two de-cades.Doingsoenabledtheadvancementofdozensofothercriticallyneededroadandbridgeprojectsstatewidein the future. This bridgework is one of the initialgroupofprojects.

She joined 2brotherstocompletetheirfam-ilyof5.Hermotherwasaschoolteacheranddadwasagroceryclerk, agent for the Goodingcreamery,andworkedasPostMasterinFairfield.PatpassedawaywithfamilybyhersideonMarch16,2016. Shelearnedtobeindependentatayoungage,andwhenthepianoinstructorcametoteachherbrotherstoplaythepiano,atage4shedecidedtoclimbuponthepianobenchandbegantotrytoplay.Theinstructorsaid,“She’sgoingtodoitanyway,sowemightaswellteachher,too.”Thiswasthebeginningofalife-longloveofmusicandthefirstofseveralinstrumentsthatshelearnedtoplay.TheSprattfamilyhadabandandplayedformanydancesandcommunityeventsinFairfieldandsurroundingcommunities. Patty,asshewasknownthen,wasastellarstudentgraduatingasvaledictorianofherclassin1942.Shekeptverybusywithdrama,debate,andreporter/editoroftheSnowshoeschoolpaper.Shewasinband,playedbaseball,letteredinbasketball,andwasamemberof4-H. Afamilyfriendencouragedhertobecomeatelegrapherafterhighschool,andshestartedworkingfortheUnionPacificRail-roadinJuneof1943.Besidesbeingatelegrapher,shepassedmessagestotheengineers.Thisinvolvedstandingascloseas1foottoaspeeding60mile-per-hourtrain.Messageswereat-tachedtoastringatthetopofforkedstick,andtheengineersgrabbedthemasthetrainwentby.Iftheyhadtostopandbackuptogetthemessage,itdidnotbringmanysmiles!ThisjobgavehertheopportunitytoseemanypartofthewesternU.S.(Nevada,Idaho,Utah,Oregon,andWyoming)asshetraveledtherailstowhereshewasneeded.AsthetroopsbegantoreturnfromWorldWarII,shewasreleasedfromherjobwiththerailroadtoletreturningmilitarypersonnelfindemploymenttosupporttheirfamilies. WhileworkinginReverse,Idaho,PatmetDonFlock,andtheyweremarried.Ofthisunion2childrenwereborn,Patricia(Patsy)in1948andWilliam(Bill)in1949.Theylaterdivorced. AfterabriefreturntotheU.P.Railroad,PatmarriedE.C.(Ted)HermanonNovember3,1951.TheymovedfromNewPlymouthtoEmmettafterthecompletionoftheirnewhomewhichhadbeenabarracksthatTedboughtandrebuiltonthepresenthomesite.Fourchildrenwereborntocompletetheirfamily:Marie,Ruth,

PatriciaRuthHerman Jim,andJean.Asherfamilygrew,PatwasveryinvolvedwiththeireducationandeventsatVanderdassonSchool,includingplayingpianoforspecialoccasionsandPTA,whereshewasinvolvedinstartingthefirst“hotlunch”program(whichconsistedofhotdogsandchips)!Duringtheseyears,shebecamefamiliarwiththepoliciesofplacing“handicapped”childreninthepublicschoolsystem.Oneofherchildrenwasbornwithaphysicalhandicapwhichcausedhimtowalkwithaslightlimp.Hewasnotraisedtoviewhislimpasahandicap,andshewouldnotallowtheschoolsystemtotreathimashavingahandicap. Tosupporttheirfamily,TedandPatoperatedadairyfarmwhileTedworkedforBoiseCascadelumbermillinEmmettandPatraisedthefamily.In1963,PatandTedranEmmettMeatandhadamobilebutchertruck.PatworkedfortheMessengerIndexasaruralreporter;fortheCensusBureauin1964;andfortheElectionBoardattheLethavotingpolls.Shewasabook-keeperforRambowLogging,ataxprepareratH&RBlock;andlaterworkedforthreeCPA’sduringtaxseasonsuntilherretirementatage62. Patplayeddrums,piano,organ,clarinet,andtheaccordion,anden-joyedlisteningtotheradioandtherecordplayer.SheandTedbecameavidrockhounds,weremembersofthe Squaw Butte Rockhounds inEmmett,andtraveledalloverthenorthwesttofindbeautifulstones.PatandTedalsoenjoyedballroomdancingformanyyears.Patwasalong-timememberoftheNewPlym-outhLelandE.ThomasVFWAuxil-liaryPostNumber9036andheldalloffices,includingtheIdahoStateVFWAuxiliarypresident. Shewasraisedandeducatedin Shoshone and graduatedfromShoshoneHighSchoolin1938andthenattendedBoiseBusiness College. While at-tendingBusinessCollegeshelivedwithandassistedGov-ernorC.BenRossandfamily.DuringherlifesheworkedforIdahoPower,BerkeleyLandBank(duringW.W.II),andsecretaryforJackMurphy–Attorney,andHowardD.Adkins–ProsecutingAttorneyforLincolnCounty. Catherinemarriedtheloveofherlifeandhighschoolsweetheart,William“Bill”ThomasononSeptember6,1941inShoshone.Tothatuniontwosonswereadded.Bill and Catherine lived in Hailey and Arco, Idaho;GuatemalaandColumbia,SouthAmericabeforesettlingdowninShoshonein1958.
