Introduction

Basically, Détente was a treat between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. for making sure the tensions between this two countries didn’t end in a nuclear war.

Definition of the Word Détente

(Definition in Recorded Narration)

Stopping A Possible War

This treat was the best idea that the two countries could agree, when the second world war was over.

The pacific way of thinking of the two governments had in the 1970´s help to save a lot of lives in the whole world.

It was a big mistake in the relations between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R.

The U.S. was not agree with this situation and it could be the beginning of the world war III.

This invasion was a risky move from the U.S.S.R. and it almost stop the beginning of the DÉTENTE process.

¿Why Nixon agree with DÉTENTE?

(Answer in Recorded Narration)

The World Before DÉTENTE

It was a very critic situation, in which the U.S., and the U.S.S.R. were two superpowers that didn’t agree in any of their positions.

The two of them were showing to the world, that they were ready to start a “radiation” war, with his nuclear bombs. The U.S. showed it in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The U.S.S.R. in their nuclear tests.

DÉTENTE Influence in Space

Without Détente, it couldn’t be possible that in 1975, the spaceship SOYUZ from the U.S.S.R., and the APOLLO from the U.S. Made a perfect and successful astronaut reunion in the middle of the “40a6” orbit of the earth, for sharing knowledge and for being a symbol of the peace in the world. THE END OF THE SPACE COMPETITION.

CAUSES OF DETENTE

The NATO powers and the Warsaw Pact both had pressing reasons to seek relaxation in tensions. Leonid Brezhnev and the rest of the Soviet leadership felt that the economic situation of the nuclear arms race was unsustainable. The American economy was also in financial trouble as the Vietnam War drained government.

TREATIES

Earlier in the 1960, before détente the partial test ban treaty had been signed in 1963. Later in the decade, the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and outer space treaty were two of the first building blocks of détente.

Conflicts after Detente

Conflicts in South Asia, and the Middle East in 1973, saw the Soviet and U.S. backing their respective allies with war material and diplomatic support.

Other Conflicts

During much of the early détente period, the Vietnam war continued to increase. Neither side trusted the other fully and the potential for nuclear war remained constant.

End of Detente

Jimmy Carter boosted the U.S. defense to begin financially aiding the President of Pakistan, General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, who would in turn subsidize the anti-Soviet Mujahideen fighters in the region.

Jimmy Carter

Important man who won a nobel peace price because of the arms reduction treaty with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.
