Rethinking assessment for the learning society - David Boud

Whatever else we do in assessment we must Promote desirable learning by students now

and into the future, and Assure the learning that occurs

Everything else is subordinate to this!

Bloom’s Taxonomy (Revised)

Slide rule

Suggested strategyHelp students to develop comprehension and understanding using computer-based system

Design question papers and calibrate them for all levels of Blooms’ taxonomy

Gradually move into computer-based examination system

Real world challenge for teachers

TimeLarge class sizeWorkload in addition to teaching

Call for actionWe need to rethink assessment designConsider computer-based tests

Otherwise,we will continue to educate the followers of yesterday rather than leaders of tomorrowtests will continue to fail to indicate who will be successful in life and who will be not

If we think of our children as plants …

Summative assessment of the plants is the process of simply measuring them.

It might be interesting to compare and analyze measurements but, in themselves, these do not affect the growth of the plants.

Formative assessment is the equivalent of watering, providing nutrients and taking care of the plants appropriate to their needs.

This directly affecting their growth.

The Garden Analogy

Concluding thoughts in the words of Swami Vivekananda

“Education is not the amount of information that is put into your brain and runs riot there, undigested all your life. We must have life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas. ”
