TODAY, through your generosity, Education for Life is able to touch many lives – thank you! Through partnership with you; people who are giving their lives and time to serve; and a committed Kenyan team many lives are being changed. Make yourself a cuppa, sit down and enjoy finding out more about life in and around Timbwani – and beyond…
Grace & Flavour! Grace Adeka, former student of Tumaini Timbwani is open for business, thanks to generous donations. Since finishing high school, Grace has been seeking employment; she managed to find odd jobs here and there, but nothing that could sustain her. Whilst looking for work, Grace was also researching the needs of the new area she lives in and discovered the need for a shop selling everybody’s daily needs! There are many new homes in the area and the place Grace chose to set up a business is on the way home for many people. When Grace took us to see the area, we could see the potential custom; the lack of competition at this time; the preparation she’d done, in researching what the local ladies need to buy, to make the products they sell for a living and then we met her landlady, Mama Margaret. Margaret is a wonderful, compassionate lady who has taken Grace under her wing; she agreed to help her to begin her business; despite the problems she encounters in her own family. Margaret’s grandson is 7 years old and was paralysed from birth, he’s able to respond to sound and touch but unable to move or sit unaided. The income that will come from renting shop space to Grace will greatly assist Margaret’s family. It’s a circle of hope! Initially Grace was selling cereals, sugar, tealeaves, flavourings, cooking oil and fats, wheat flour, maize flour, washing powder, toothpaste, toothbrushes and much more and when the fundi’s have finished the carpentry, she’ll also begin a green grocery section. We visited twice recently and witnessed several customers being served with a very friendly, happy smile. Thank you!
C.I.A. Compassion In Action
Many a time compassion is felt and shared but least put into action. We, members of C.I.A. youth group would like to put it into action. C.I.A. is a new group, started to serve the community, to invest our time for the sake of others and keep our fellow youth from hazardous activities. Membership is open to persons of all races and religion, over 15 years of age; members must be patient, persistent, committed and dynamic; these virtues will help in achieving our goals. We aim to bring help to the helpless and support to the destitute, to care for and clean patients in hospitals, provide help for prisoners and share with those less fortunate than ourselves, listening to them. To achieve our goals we are doing manual work, raising funds for group activities, transport, uniforms and ID’s so that we are given permission to work in the institutions and hospitals we intend to visit. With God’s guidance and blessings we hope, and really look forward to making others feel better and appreciated. If we walk alone, the journey is tough and the luggage we are carrying is heavy, but with God all things are possible. Sasa nini? (Now what?) How often do we think about the amount of milk we consume each day? This thought becomes conversation on everyone’s lips when there is no milk on the shelves in the shop. People discussing where they found it last, how many packets you’re allowed to buy and the cost… During 2012 milk has become scarce in Kenya, partly due to the long, hot dry season; population growth; low milk yield and areas being used, operating far below their potential.
Nestled high in the hills is the community of Mgambonyi – a productive area, with a perfect climate for growing napier grass, maize, avocados, potatoes, French beans, etc and for dairy farming. Brookside, one of the countries leading milk suppliers, in partnership with the community established a milk cooling plant. The community provided the building and Brookside furnished it with the necessary equipment. Families typically own 2 or 3 cows; they deliver milk to the cooling plant and are paid each month for the milk they produce. Ronald and Agnela, a local family, have great vision and ability and together we are looking at developing dairy production in their area. Initially, and in consultation with government vets and local farmers we will grow food and then purchase more cows at a cost of approximately £750 per cow. As production increases and the area develops; so will the plans…
