INTRODUCTION
Executive Summary
In the present scenario the welfare facilities are very much important. A good
facility is one of the pillars of the development of the industry. If influences greatly on
the employee satisfaction and productivity and efficiency of the workers.
During my project work at Gokak Forbes Mills Ltd. I was assigned the subject ‘
welfare facilities and its impact on employee satisfaction.
This survey helps company’s to determine how their employees think, and what
they want and concerns so that improvement can be made and stronger hams can be
developed.
Harmonious welfare facilities will result in increasing efficiency, production and
profit which will ultimately lead to higher wages, better working conditions and other
fringe benefits to workers.
For this purpose a sample was selected and survey was done with the help of
questionnaire the result were analyzed for all the employees. The topic covers the various
aspects of welfare facilities viz statutory and non-statutory measures and workers
participation.

LITERATURE REVIEW:
Welfare means faring or doing well. It is a comprehensive term, and refers to the
physical ,mental ,moral and emotional well being of an individual. Further ,the term
welfare is a relative concept, relative in time and space. It there ,varies from time to time,
from region to and from country to country.
DEFINITION:
According to James Todd, “Labor welfare means anything done for the comfort
and improvement, intellectual or social of the employees and above the wages paid which
is not a necessity of the industry.

CLASSIFICATION OF LABOUR WELFARE :
STATUTORY LABOR WELFARE:
It include those services which have to be provided irrespective
of the size of the establishment. The various labor welfare measures in India
is given in the factories act 1948.
NON-STATUTORY LABOR WELFARE:
It includes all those service activities which employers undertake for their
Workers on voluntary basis.
MUTUAL LABOR WELFARE:
Mutual Labor welfare is co-operative enterprise undertaken by the workers
themselves. Some trade unions also under take responsibility of workers welfare.

STATUTORY WELFARE MEASURES:
Washing Facility (Sec 42): In every factory
Adequate and suitable facilities for working shall be provided and maintained for
the use of workers therein.
Separate and adequately screened facilities shall be provided for use of male and
female workers.
Such facilities shall be convent accessible and kept clean.
FACILITIES FOR STRONG AND DRYING CLOTHING (SEC 430):
The state Government may in respect of any factory or class or description of
factories make rules requiring the provisions therein of suitable places for keeping
clothing not worn during the working hours and drying wet clothing.
Facilities for setting (Sec 44)
In every factory, suitable arrangements for setting shall be made and workers
obliged to work in a standing position in order that they may take advantage of any
opportunity for rest, which may occur in the course of their work.
First Aid Appliances (Sec 45):
There shall in every factory be provided and maintained so as to be readily
accessible during all working hours first-aid boxer or cupboards equipped with the
prescribed contents.
Not less than 1 for every 150 workers at any time. For a factory with more than 500
workers an ambulance room shall be provided and maintained. All Service is to be
readily available during the working hours of the factory.

Canteen (Sec 46):
The state Government may make rules requiring that in any specified factory wherein
more than 250 workers are ordinarily employed a canteen shall be provided and
maintained by the occupier for the use of the workers. Shelters,
Rest Rooms and Lunch Rooms (Sec 47):
In every factory wherein more than 150 workers are ordinarily Employed, Adequate and
suitable shelters of rest rooms and a suitable lunch room with provision of drinking water
where workers can eat meals brought by them shall be provided and maintained for the
use of the workers.
Crèches (Sec 48):
In every factory wherein more than 30 workers (women) are employed ordinarily,
there shall be provided and maintained a suitable rooms for the use of children under the
age of 6 years of such women.
Welfare Officers (Sec 49):
In every factory wherein 500 or more workers are ordinary employed, the
occupier shall employ in the factory such number and welfare officers as may be
prescribed. The stage Governments may prescribe the duties qualifications and conditions
of service of welfare officer appointed under the provision of the factories act.
The above measures, which are provided for in the factories act, are called
statutory welfare measures.

for the organization. So the organization must motivate and retain its workers for its
better productivity by providing better employee facilities.

SUMMERY
TITLE OF THE PROJECT
A study report on welfare facilities and impact on employee satisfaction with
respect to Forbes Gokak Mills Gokak falls.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The study of welfare facilities and its impact on employee satisfaction provided in
Gokak Forbes Mills has been taken to analyze and evaluate existing welfare facilities in
the given industry. The project is aimed at understanding various employee welfare
schemes such as health safety sanitation etc. to enable the persons employed in them and
to perform the works in healthy and congenial surroundings which may have direct or
indirect effect on employee satisfaction and productivity in organization.
MANAGEMENT PROBLEM
Management wants to know the satisfaction level of employees towards welfare
facilities provided by the company to increase the effectiveness and productivity for the
bright future of the organization.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The main purpose of doing this project is to know what are welfare measures are
given by the company to their employees and to study whether the employees and to
study whether the employee are really satisfied with the measures. To gaining practical
knowledge about HR practices.

The study conducted at Forbes Gokak Ltd Mill No 4. Deals with all the matters
related to labor welfare facilities and its impact on employee satisfaction. It include all
the essential requirements of life and minimum basic amenities. The questionnaire for
this survey was framed considering those factors where corrective action can be taken at
Forbes Gokak Ltd
OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

INTRODUCTION
The Textile engineering industry trade is planning an important role in the growth
of the textile industry in the country. Textile industry in India exists from centuries as
Indian textile of cotton and silk is well known in the international market Textile
engineering industry started in a small way almost from decades back has shown a
tremendous growth of technological development ,several machinery manufacturers who
are already in the field have started joint ventures for up gradation of technology of
manufactures sophistic textile machine for the domestic and export market. The industry
today manufactures the entire range of machinery for producing man-power fibers
Spinning ,Weaving ,Knitting ,Chemical processing of yarn and fabric .The Indian textile
industry is pioneer in the capital goods. Sector and proudly claim to be a major
contributor in the modernization and expansion of the textile industry. Rapid
development has been taken place in the textile engineering industry in the last several
years.

INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN TEXTILE INDUSTRY
Indian Cotton textile industry acquires a key and an important position in the economy of
our country. Textile being the oldest and traditional industry in India ,it is firmly establish
in Indian economy Textile industry in India exists from centuries as Indian textiles of
cotton and silk is well known in the international market.
The industry apart from being one of the agro based industries is also labor
intensive and produces one of the most important day to day customer items essential for
the people.
Cotton is the main raw material needed for the production of yarn and cloth.
The Indian textile industry is predominantly cotton based with 70% of fabric production
in the country being accounted for the cotton. The development of industry in India
encourages the formal to grow more and more cotton which increase the employment
opportunities and income in the agricultural sector .
India is the 4 th largest producer of cotton after China and USA. But due to
heavy competition it is becoming tough job to survive since last 3 years .
Textile industry is passing through one of the worst periods in recent
days .Spinning one of the work periods in recent days .Spinning industry has suffered the
most unremunerative a crisis hardly adequate to need the variable costs.
The only saving grace was the movement of yarn in the export market. Thus
globally the textile spinning industries are under tremendous pressure ,despite efforts to
improve the price of furnished products.
Indian spinning industry went to a rapid modernization in last five
years ,because which India emerged as a largest export of cotton yarn in the world.

company.

A PROFILE OF GOKAK MILLS
Among the 27 district of Karnataka the beautiful district belgaum is localized in
the North Western part of the state. It lies between 15° 23 to 16° 48 North latitude and 74°
5 to 75° 28 East longitude. Belgaum occupy 6.99% of the total geographical area of the
state and rank 6th in the area among the 27 district of the state. Though the district is
condensed a backward one , it is forward in agriculture .The district has the credit of
producing the hydro-electric power for the first time in India at Gokak falls in 1913.
Belgaum district is endowed with rich agricultural and horticultural heritage and
resources .Cotton the white gold , is one of the main cash crops in the region.
At present there are six mills in the district , in which one is situated at Gokak.
Among these six mills the Gokak mill is the oldest ,the biggest and most firmly
established cotton mill of the district.
It is located in the foothills of sahyadary hill on the bank of river
Ghataprabha ,near the famous picturesque, gorge where the river plunges vertically down
a 52 meters. Stand stone diff.70 km away from belgaum, 6km away from Gokak
town .Gokak falls name is known for its water fall ,the height of the water falls is above
170 feet accept in its width and the color of its water resembles features of the falls its
heights slope and the rapid above. A wire rope hanging a bridge of 210 meters a length is
build across the river to enable Northern side population to cross the river Ghataprabha.
The land at Gokak falls is gradient with rocks and not suitable for agriculture. The
beauty of the area is beyond expression and one has to see to believe it the best time to
see waterfall is between July and November .There is old Mahalingeshwar temple. Which

it is believed is constructed by a roller called Karthyveera around the year 1153 A.D it is
beautiful to see.
Gokak mills was registered in London under the name and style of Gokak water
power and manufacturing company in 1885 on 5th October 1887 the very first power
house of the country was commissioned with the help of 250 HP of mechanical power
generated by pelt on wheel ,which was transmitted to the spinning mill run by Gokak
water power and manufacturing Co Ltd. The transmission by steel wire ropes was first up
to a pier on the southern cliff immediately over looking the turbine at a length of 300 feet.
The mi is situated 439 feet further south.
The first mill in Gokak falls was commissioned for manufacturing courses count
cotton yarn. This mil is presently known as No 1 mill and has a capacity of 23,616
spindles. subsequently during 1912 and 1913, mechanical power grating pelt on wheel
was replaced with three sets of vertical drive turbo generators for generation of
electrically. The subsequent years a new mill by name Campbell mill was constructed.
This mill is today known as No 2 mill, amongst which a technologically. Superior having
state of the art technology machinery export oriented unit(EOU).
e.g:-No 7 mill is also included to increase the quality products. Gokak mill is considered
as one of leading manufacturers of quality yarn with consistency in its products. Both in
terms of quality and capacity. All mills have been modernized over a period of time and
are capable of achieving required quality of the international standards.

PRODUCT:-
Gokak mill has established itself as a product of tailor made quality
product to suit the requirements of individual customers specific needs like the type
of material and quality required for them ,the technical parameters the type of
machine they have and the speed at which the work , the end use of the products and
the critical requirements of the customers .
Gokak mill have 400 varieties of yarns of cotton and polyester cotton
blends ,which have standard specification and standardized process payments since
the design and color are fashion led and change very fast ,they have installed
computerize design system ,by which they can prepare and new design within 25
minutes and switch over the production.

Increase sale of value added items like:- Dyed yarn and terry towel ,expanding

Increase in grey yarn export to South America.
It is proposed to renovate mill no4 art of technology machines.
The mills are converted by various laboratory requirements the factories

Labor act etc.

cannot more a single step. Account department the heart of the Gokak mill which deals
with all monetary activities such as payment to suppliers ,Salary, Provident fund
etc .The company has two audit and external audit. Account department work is assigned
to different sections.
FUNCTIONS OF ACCOUNTS EPARTMENT:-

RETIREMENT BENEFITS:
In Gokak Mills along with regular wages and reward the employees also obtain
some retirement benefits, whereby they can make themselves eligible to handle their day
expenses at the time of non-income period.
PAYMENT OF GRATUTY:
Every employee worked for 5 years or more is entitled 20 receive a gratuity at his
retirement at the rate equivalent to 15 days. Salary for every year completed year of
service. In case permanent employee if he has not worked for 240 days in any year of
services he is not entitled to receive any gratuity for that year.
In the same way for badli workers it is obligatory to work for 240 days in every
year of his service. If he fails to do so he is not entitled to receive gratuity for any year of
service.
EMPLOYEES PROVIDENT FUND:
Every employee is entitled as per E.P.F act 1962 to contribute 12% of his gross salary.
(Basic Pay +Inc +DA to PF and employer will be contributing 12%).
After retirement employee will receive the amount contributed to P.F. at a single lump

SUGGESTIONS
Recommendations
The transport facility is not provided round the clock in company, so it would be
better the company starts a bus service from different stops.
The company should give more attention about housing colony of the workers,
because in such colonies it was observed that some houses are very small in size
these kind of houses are not comfortable to workers and their children.
Employee’s participation in management should be encouraged
The canteen should be provided with good quality of food Because health is
wealth if there is no health then how the employees do the work effectively
Most of the employees are not satisfied with the salary / wages compare to work
load so management should provide so extra benefits who are regular and
experienced employees.
Management should provide improved rest room and lunch room for the
employees and keep clean and comfortable.
Most of the employees are not satisfied with the time given for the lunch break so
management should give sufficient time to the employees.
81% of the employees are not satisfied with the Promotion Policy of the
organization so management should provide some promotion schemes to the
workers.

CONCLUSIONS
Over all impression of the welfare facilities provided at Forbes Gokak Mills Ltd.
is satisfactory, Management should provide good canteen facility to the employees, good
transportation facilities, extending lunch hour time, implementing new promotional
policy.
Majority of the respondents expressed satisfaction on the welfare measures
implemented by the company.
