*Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison.
Prelude God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen trad. English carol arr. Kartsonakis Chiming of the Hour Welcome
Introit
Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light, and usher in the morning. You shepherds, shudder not with fright, but hear the angel’s warning. This child, now weak in infancy, our confidence and joy shall be, The power of Satan breaking, our peace eternal making. (hymn 130)
*Call to Worship Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let heaven and nature sing! The Word became flesh and lived among us, And we have seen his glory, full of grace and truth.
*Hymn 134 Joy to the World
*Invitation to Confession
*Prayer of Confession
(silent confession) O God, we confess that we have sinned in what we have done, and in what we have left undone. We have failed to make room for Christ in our lives, filling our days instead with things that pull us away from you. We have failed to freely share your joy with all, afraid that it will run out. Forgive us, Lord. Remind us anew of the abundance of your love for the entire world, so that we might in turn share it in full measure; through the Word-Made-Flesh we pray. Amen.
*Assurance of Forgiveness

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Oak Ridge, Tennessee
A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
July 1, 2018 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
*The Peace of Christ
Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.
*Sung Response (hymn 113)
Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Time with the Children Chuck Hadden
First Scripture Reading Isaiah 9:6-7
Anthem Go Tell It! Vangeloff Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere. Go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born. When I was a sinner I prayed both night and day I asked the Lord to help me and He showed me the way. Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere. Go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born.
Second Scripture Reading Luke 2:1-9
Sermon Joy to the World! Sharon Youngs
*Affirmation of Faith (The Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of
the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Call to Prayer (hymn 121, vs 3)
How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES The temperature is in the 90s outside, but it is
“Christmas in July” here at FPC! Today and for
the next two weeks, we are celebrating the gift of
the Christ child without all of the pressures of the
December holiday season. Our specific focus is on
joy. This morning we are looking at “Joy to the
World.” What might that actually mean?
Next week, July 8, we’ll look at “Joy to the Fishes
in the Deep Blue Sea.” On July 15, it’s (you
guessed it) “Joy to You and Me.”
During our season of Christmas in July, we will
sing a Christmas hymn each week that may be less
familiar than those we use in December. “Who
Would Think That What Was Needed” is one such
hymn. Its thought-provoking text, authored by
John Bell and Graham Maule, comes from the
first volume of the Iona Community’s “Wild
Goose Songs” (a term based on a Celtic image for
the Holy Spirit), published in 1987. Unlike most
carols and hymns for Christmas, this text is not so
interested in the narrative of Jesus’ birth. The key
phrase is in the refrain: “God surprises.” The
inadequacy of human comprehension is expressed
thus: “Who would think,” “ponder,” “watch and
wonder,” and such phrases. God uses the unlikely
to confound all our human conjectures and antici-
pations: “a child,” “a holy helpless thing,” “a baby
laid in hay.” When we recognize that we cannot
find out God’s ways on our own, then we can be-
gin to appreciate the gracious transformation God
offers us: “God surprises earth with heaven.”
