GIS for Oceana County?
Planning CommissionDavid Roseman
February 23, 2010
Premises
• Adding mapping information makes data morevaluable
• County would function more efficiently if datashared and available through GIS
• Some time in the future, all data will beintegrated with GIS
• Is there enough interest to proceed now?

GIS basics
• All location data entered as latitude, longitude+/- altitude coordinates
• 2D or 3D structures may be added
• Examples are weather maps, GPS maps, etc
• Data can be stored in a central database, distributed databases, or shared as files(shapefiles)

GIS basics
• Data sources– State CGI, National Wetlands, GLIN, etc– local
• Information can be shared among many kindsof applications– ArcView, Xmap, etc– Google Earth, Microsoft Bing– AutoCAD and other CAD programs– Sketchup

Scandia example
[Used XMap 4.5 to show bathymetry and shipping lanesto understand windfarm footprint]
County GIS Experience (1)
• Road Commission• RoadSoft software
• 2 users
• Much data

GIS experience (2)
• Equalization– Digital information stored in BS&A software
– Available online
– An important next step is to add add coordinatedata

GIS experience (3)
• Conservation District– Have 4 ArcView seats.
– Use to outline farms and fields, determineacreage, can download from GPS

GIS experience (4)
• Drain Commission– Could use to map 106 drains
• Sheriff’s Department– most of their info would go thru 911.– Have some applications that connect through
commercial GPS apps.– Have ability to find nearest intersections.– Can see previous calls via Computer Aided
Dispatch system

GIS experience (5)
• Emergency Management– Many mapping issues
– Interested in being involved
– Experience with data management in largecommunities
– Does GPS mapping—could share data with RoadCommission

Other useful data
• Water mains and valves• Sewer locations• Electrical, phone and cable utilities• Gas lines and valves• Internet fiberoptics and cabling• Zoning maps• Toxic gas pipelines and valves• Etc

Data management models
• Central database– Long-term goal
• Distributed databases, with central repository– Good starting point
– Post shapefiles to website
– This is approach used by the State

Other governments
• Much information at Michigan Center forGeographic Information
• Muskegon County
Possible next steps
• Meeting with Thomas Van Bruggen ofMuskegon
• Demonstrations of County applications
• Upgrade ArcView licenses
• Establish GIS coordinator
• High-resolution aerial photos– Pictronix
