H-E-B/UT RESIDENCY PROGRAM Newsletter Summer 2016 Edition Accreditation Update from the ResidencyProgram Director by Nathan Pope, Pharm.D.,BCACP – Clinical Assistant Professor at TheUniversity of Texas at Austin College ofPharmacy This past January, the PGY1 H-E-B/UTCommunity Pharmacy Residency Programunderwent a site survey byASHPAccreditationServices. The H-E-B/UT program has beenaccredited by ASHP in partnership with APhAsince its inception in 2009. Accreditationsurveyors visit accredited programs every 6years. The feedback from the surveyors wasoutstanding!Wewill receive our official resultsafter the ASHP Commission of Credentialingmeetsthissummer. A PGY1 community pharmacy residencyprogramisanorganized,directed,postgraduatetrainingprogramthatcentersondevelopmentofthe knowledge, skills, and abilities needed topursue patient care in the community setting.The program strives to develop innovativepharmacypracticeleadersequippedtomeetthechallenges presented by the rapidly changinghealth care system. Through required andelectiveopportunities,residencyprogramsfocusonthefollowing:

• DirectPatientCare• Leadership• PracticeManagement• CommunicationSkills• HealthandWellnessPromotion• Technology• TeachingSkills

Ourrecent5residents(seenextpageformore) finished the program June 30, 2016 andarepoisedtoenterthepharmacyworkforcewithuniqueandfinelytunedclinicalandmanagementskills.We have had 19 graduates complete ourprogram since 2010. These outstandingpharmacists have entered the workforce intremendousfashion.

We welcome our new residents startingJuly1,2016.For the first time inourprogram’shistory,wewelcome4Pharm.D.graduatesfromThe University of Texas at Austin College ofPharmacy – Marie Tillema, Mikaela DeBarba,Gretchen Dao, and Angelica Cuenco. Our 5thresident, Ashley Floyd, received her Pharm.D.from TAMHSC: Irma Lerma Rangel College ofPharmacy. Iwouldliketoendwithabigthankyoutothe team that makes this residency the bestprogram in thecountrywith thehighestqualityyear after year. Our site preceptors include:GrettaLeckbee(Austin5),JamesWeems(Austin8), Lauren Clark (Austin 30), Mark Comfort(Austin 3), Jennifer Wilbanks (Pflugerville 2),and Scott Shelton (Austin 23). In addition, Iwould like to thank Donna Montemayor, KimJanicke, Jose Cervantes, Kristie Newton, GenePatalik,JanaBusby,JodyLee,andthemanyotherPartnersthatmakethishappen.

FAREWELLResidencyClassof2015-2016:Projects and Future Endeavors KelseyBailey,Pharm.D.,UniversityofOklahoma

Kelsey collaborated with co-residentAmanda Kernodle, Pharm.D. and the Center forHealth Communication at UT Austin todetermine the effect persuasive messagefeaturescanhaveonCMRacceptancerates.Thisproject is to be continued by the next class ofincomingresidents.Kelseyhasacceptedafloaterpharmacist position with H-E-B in the SanAntonioregionwhereshewillrelocatewithherhusband.OmaidaHernandez-Ray,Pharm.D.,UniversityofHouston

Omaida’s project focused on the effectsand benefits of an H-E-B Pharmacy outreachprogram to increase vaccination rates. Shelookedatoutcomesoftheautomatedcallsmadein December 2015 to diabetic patients aged 65and older. Out of the 55,536 calls made, 644Prevnar 13® vaccineswere administered in themonthfollowingthecalls,whichwas21%ofallthe Prevnar 13® vaccines given in January.Omaida has accepted a floater pharmacistpositionwithH-E-BintheHoustonregion. AmandaKernodle,Pharm.D.,PurdueUniversity

Amanda’s interdisciplinary collaborationwithKelseyandresearchersattheUTCenterforHealth Communication has now expanded toinclude theRxEACHCall Center in SanAntonio.They have developed 8 different phone callscripts using persuasive messages to be testedon patients. The end goal of this project is toidentify which of these scripts had the highestCMR acceptance rates. Amanda is excited tocontinue her career with H-E-B Pharmacy as afloaterpharmacistintheAustinregion.

SunSeo,Pharm.D.,UniversityofTexasatAustin

Sun’sprojectfocusedmainlyonMedicarePartDStarRatingsandEQuIPPTM.Sheconductedasurveyinordertoassesspharmacists’opinionsregarding H-E-B’s program initiatives to helpimprove Star Ratings. In addition, this surveyaddressed issues and concerns with theEQuIPPTM platform, which was introducedearlier in 2015. Sun has accepted a floaterpharmacist position with H-E-B in the Austinregion.KatieSteele,Pharm.D.,TexasTechUniversity

Katie’s project addressed pharmacists’andtechnicians’perceptionsofbenefits,barriersand comfort level of technician involvement inimmunizations and sought to determine anydifferences in perceptions pre- and post-intervention.Thisintervention’sfocusistotraintechnicians more about vaccinations in generalandissettobeginsometimenextyear.Katiewillbe continuing on to a PGY2Residency programspecializinginAcademiaandAmbulatoryCareatPacific University School of Pharmacy andVirginia Garcia Memorial Health Center inHillsboro,Oregon.
