OPENING ACCLAMATION

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from

COLLECT FOR PURITY

that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name;

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,

we worship you,

GLORIA

we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

Lord God, Lamb of God,

GLORIA

you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,

GLORIA

you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.

Amen.

GLORIA

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.Let us pray.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

O God, you have taught us to keep all your commandments by loving you

and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be

devoted to you with our whole heart,

COLLECT OF THE DAY

and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you

and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Rejoice in heart and soul, Daughter of Zion! Shout with gladness, Daughter of Jerusalem! Look – your ruler comes to

you, victorious and triumphant, humble, riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a

donkey!

Zechariah 9:9-12

The ruler will banish chariots from Ephraim and horses from Jerusalem; the

bow will be banished. The ruler will proclaim peace for the nations;

Zechariah 9:9-12

the empire stretching from sea to sea, from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you, due to the blood covenant with me, I am returning your prisoners

from their waterless pit.

Zechariah 9:9-12

Return to your stronghold, O Prisoners of hope! Today I declare that I will give

you back double! The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Zechariah 9:9-12

8 The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, *

slow to anger and of great kindness.

Psalm 145:8-15

9 The Lord is loving to everyone *and his compassion is over all his works.

Psalm 145:8-15

10 All your works praise you, O Lord, *and your faithful servants bless you.

Psalm 145:8-15

11 They make known the glory of your kingdom *

and speak of your power;

Psalm 145:8-15

12 That the peoples may know of your power *

and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.

Psalm 145:8-15

13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom; *

your dominion endures throughout all ages.

Psalm 145:8-15

14 The Lord is faithful in all his words *and merciful in all his deeds.

Psalm 145:8-15

15 The Lord upholds all those who fall; *he lifts up those who are bowed down.

Psalm 145:8-15

I don’t understand what I do – for I don’t do the things I want to do, but

rather the things I hate. And if I do the very thing I don’t want to do, I am

agreeing that the Law is good.

Romans 7:15-25a

Consequently, what is happening in me is not really “me,” but sin living in me. I know that no good dwells in me, that is, in my human nature; the desire to do

right is there, but not the power.

Romans 7:15-25a

What happens is that I don’t do the good I intend to do, but the evil I do not

intend. But if I do what is against my will, it is not I who do it, but sin that

dwells in me.

Romans 7:15-25a

This means that even though I want to do what is right, a law that leads to

wrongdoing is always at hand. My inner self joyfully agrees with the law of God,

Romans 7:15-25a

but I see in my body’s members another law, in opposition to the law of my

mind; this makes me a prisoner of the law of sin in my members.

Romans 7:15-25a

I am to be pitied! Who then can free me from this body under the power of

death? Thanks be to God – it is Jesus Christ our Savior!

Romans 7:15-25a

The Word of the LordThanks be to God.

Romans 7:15-25a

The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew.Glory to you, Lord Christ.

THE GOSPELMatthew 11:16-19, 25-30

Jesus said to the crowd, “To what will I compare this generation? It is

like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one

another,

Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they

say, ‘He has a demon’;

Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

“the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a

glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet

wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and

have revealed them to infants;

Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

“yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except

the Father,

Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

“and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all

you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in

heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my

burden is light.”

Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

Sermon by Kahu Kawika Jackson

Somethin’ Bout BelievingDuke Ellington

(From “The Sacred Concert,”St. John the Divine, New York, 1968)

Sermon Musical Response

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

NICENE CREED

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

NICENE CREED

begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came

down from heaven:

NICENE CREED

by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin

Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under

Pontius Pilate;

NICENE CREED

he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the

Father.

NICENE CREED

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the

Lord, the giver of life,

NICENE CREED

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

NICENE CREED

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

NICENE CREED

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

NICENE CREED

THE PEACE

Holy Communion Instructions

Offertory Anthem

The Lord be with you.And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Holy Communion

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give God thanks and

praise.

Holy Communion

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven

and earth.

Holy Communion

Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light

to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of

your son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Holy Communion

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who

forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Holy Communion

Holy, holy, holy, Lord,God of power and might:

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest!

Holy Communion

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest!

Holy Communion

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of

Israel to be your people;

Holy Communion

in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word

made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior

and Redeemer of the world.

Holy Communion

In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness,

out of death into life.

Holy Communion

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it,

and gave it to his disciples, and said,

Holy Communion

“Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the

remembrance of me.”After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and

said,

Holy Communion

“Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for

the remembrance of me.”

Holy Communion

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We remember his death,We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory.

Holy Communion

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all;

presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

Holy Communion

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of

Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant.

Holy Communion

Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Holy Communion

In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with

all your saints,

Holy Communion

we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus

Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the

author of our salvation.

Holy Communion

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now

and for ever. AMEN.

Holy Communion

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

Holy Communion

thy kingdom come, thy will be done,on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Holy Communion

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

Holy Communion

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Holy Communion

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your

hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
