GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME

Please stand for the Entrance Procession. Remain standing for

THE GREETING

The president welcomes the people and says: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Sit or kneel

We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. Let us then run our race, laying aside every weight and bringing our sins to the Lord in penitence and faith.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE HYMN OF PRAISE (GLORIA) Please stand to sing

Christ Church Mass, P. Matthias (b.1954)

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, you have built your Church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ himself as the chief cornerstone: we thank you for the apostles Simon and Jude, and we pray that we may reveal your love and mercy, and being joined in unity of spirit may grow into a holy temple, acceptable to you; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Please sit

FIRST READING: Deuteronomy 32.1-4 Read by Joy Burman

1 Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; let the earth hear the words of my mouth. 2 May my teaching drop like the rain, my speech condense like the dew; like gentle rain on grass, like showers on new growth. 3 For I will proclaim the name of the LORD; ascribe greatness to our God! 4 The Rock, his work is perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God, without deceit, just and upright is he.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 19.1-6 Please join in saying the verses in bold

1 The heavens declare the glory of God: and the firmament proclaims his handiwork;

2 One day tells it to another: and night to night communicates knowledge.

3 There is no speech or language: nor are their voices heard;

4 Yet their sound has gone out through all the world: and their words to the ends of the earth.

5 There he has pitched a tent for the sun: which comes out as a bridegroom from his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run his course.

6 Its rising is at one end of the heavens, and its circuit to their farthest bound: and nothing is hidden from its heat.

SECOND READING: Jude 1-3, 17-25

1 Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, To those who are called, who are beloved in God the Father and kept safe for Jesus Christ: 2 May mercy, peace, and love be yours in abundance. 3 Beloved, while eagerly preparing to write to you about the salvation we share, I find it necessary to write and appeal to you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.

17 But you, beloved, must remember the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18for they said to you, ‘In the last time there will be scoffers, indulging their own ungodly lusts.’ 19It is these worldly people, devoid of the Spirit, who are causing divisions. 20But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; 21keep yourselves in the love of God; look forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22And have mercy on some who are wavering; 23save others by snatching them out of the fire; and have mercy on still others with fear, hating even the tunic defiled by their bodies.

24 Now to him who is able to keep you from falling, and to make you stand without blemish in the presence of his glory with rejoicing, 25to the only God our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. Amen.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL Remain standing

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke: 6.12-16 Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

12 Now during those days Jesus went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. 13And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: 14Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, 16and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

NICENE CREED Please stand

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Please sit or kneel Led by the Bible Study Group

Let us pray for the world and for the church.

After each petition Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD’S PEOPLE

The president prays the post-communion prayer. Please stand

Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

THE DISMISSAL HYMN

Thanks be to God for his blessings which daily surround us; glory to Christ, the Redeemer who sought us and found us, who from the grave rose, the almighty to save, breaking the fetters that bound us.

Thanks be to God for the years that are yet in his keeping, trusting each day to the care of a Father unsleeping on to the end Christ our companion and friend, joy at the last for our weeping.

Thanks be to God who has called us and daily defends us, who with the Son and the Spirit unchanging befriends us; now in that name, Jesus for ever the same, forth to his service he sends us.
