Jharkhand , the 28th state of the Indian Union was brought into existence on

November 15, 2000- Land of Opportunities

The State is rich in forest & minerals complementing its vibrant tribal culture

Tribal people can make valuable contributions to the national society’s

knowledge of socio-economic adaptations to fragile eco-systems

Major challenges

• High incidence of rural poverty . 49% as per the national survey – Highest in nation

• Health and education indicators are below the national average

• Child Malnutrition , Infant mortality rates are very high compare with national average

CRAFTS SECTOR

• The country's total handicrafts exports stood at USD 2.3 billion in 2010-11. 

• 23 Million craftspeople are employed• Craftspeople form the second largest employment

sector in India, second only to agriculture•  63% of exports turnover•  9 items dominate exports of handicrafts• These nine items include art metal ware, wood

ware, hand-printed textiles, hand-knotted and embroidered textiles, leather goods, stoneware, carpets and floor coverings.

• 2006 – Jharcraft was started as an n institution to create new opportunities to rural areas with an objectives to change the lives

• The main objective is to provide a marketing space for merchandise manufactured by the rural artisans & NGO’s

• Jharcraft provides support for Tasar silk, woodcrafts , Bamboo crafts , Dhokra art , Lac Bangles , Lather items , Cane products , Jute crafts , Terracotta products ect.

• Currently it supports more than 40000 artisans

• 26 Emporiums across the country

• Total turn over touched Rs 30 Crore in 2010-11

MAHALI COMMUNITY • Mahali is a community of

people among the santals live in santhal pargana area.

• They are totally dependant on bamboo for their livelihood, like basketry, mat making and other utility items.

• There are approximately 30000 to 50000 Mahalis are there in each districts of Santhal pargana

• Land less labors • Traditionally they work as a

• Trained artisans come into a group and work on the orders given by ESAF

• Village production centers introduced

• Packing , labeling and other final touches taken care at Business incubation centers in nearby towns

8 Women are working in this village regularly Under the leadership of an entrepreneur from 2008.They are earning around 2000 Rs/ month.Now migration is stopped among them.

• The Income of Individual has increased from 20 – 30 Rs earlier to 80 – 120 Rs a day which is almost 500 – 600% Increase

• They are getting regular orders

• Quality has improved substantially

Story of Lal Murmu•Hails from Jamkanter village, Shikaripara block of Dumka district•Earlier migrate to Bengal four times an year with family•Earn 2000/ month along with wife•In traditional bamboo work earns around 1500/ month both husband and wife•Started to work with ESAF one year back after getting training•Now earning approximately 4000 /month together if regularly working• Never migrated•Sending daughter to school•Now leading a production group in his villageESAF

• Bamboo craft was mixed with the famous ‘Santiniketan Leather art”, a handcrafted leather work which is a heritage of the Tagorean institute, Santiniketan located barely 130 Kms from Dumka
