What Does The Name Of The City Mean?

Maybe the name of the city means that the knights of the order, who lived in Memelburgh Castle, laid tribute under the people and were called by them gluttons of bread.

A legend tells about two brothers who were looking for a place to settle their tribe. They started quarreling. One of them decided to settle on the coast of the lagoon, but the other did not like the swampy place and went further on. When he did not come back the first brother followed his footsteps searching for him, but he found just a terrible footprint (Lith. klaiki pėda). Thus the settlement was called Klaiki peda and later became Klaipeda.

Klaipeda is the country’s largest transport junction. It has significant importance not only for Lithuania, but also for the entire Baltic region.

It is a place where the main sea and land routes join together.

One of the top priorities of Klaipeda is to become an open European city, able to co-operate with all cities of the world in economic, cultural, sport and other fields.
