PRAYER, FASTING

ALMSGIVING

Typical form of PRAYER

ADORATION:

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

Eucharist

• During the consecration (the part of the Mass in which the priest prays over the bread and wine, repeating Jesus’ prayers from the Last Supper) the bread & wine become the body and blood of Christ

Eucharist

• the body and blood of Christ are referred to as the ‘Blessed Sacrament’

Eucharist• Jesus is truly present in the

Eucharist. • Eucharistic adoration: is a type

of prayer in which one meditates before the Blessed Sacrament [and thus before Jesus] either privately = individually; or communally = together

Eucharist• This communal prayer is

referred to as Benediction.• Benediction = special ritual

prayer and blessing with the Blessed Sacrament

During ‘adoration’ a monstrance is used

A monstrance is an ornate

‘container’ for the consecrated host

Examples of Monstrances

A tabernacle:the place where the consecrated hosts are kept

A tabernacle:the ‘fuller sense’ of the Ark of the Covenant!

Examples of Tabernacles

Expositionthe custom of taking the Eucharist from the tabernacle and placing it in the monstrance so that the Eucharist is visible for prayer

Spend time with Jesus this Lent and participate in

adoration…
