GET BACK UP: Following last night’s extra inning 4-3 loss, the
Dodgers today look for the split in their four-game series against
the Giants and close out the seven-game road trip (2-4) with an
afternoon showdown at AT&T Park. After the today’s game in
San Francisco, the Dodgers will return home for a six-game
homestand against the Philadelphia Phillies (April 28-30) and the
San Francisco Giants (May 1-3).
The Dodgers are looking to avoid losing their fourth
consecutive series in San Francisco, after losing all three
series in the Bay Area last season.
The Dodgers have lost seven of their last 10 games
against the Giants, including seven of their last eight
games in San Francisco.
The Blue Crew lost the 2016 season series 8-11 against
the Giants, including a 2-8 mark at AT&T Park for their
second straight season.
THE PHENOM RETURNS: Prior to today’s game, the
Dodgers will recall left-handed pitcher Julio Urías from Triple-
A Oklahoma City and will make his 2017 debut today with a start
against the Giants. He last pitched for Triple-A OKC on April 21
against Nashville (Athletics), allowing just two hits in 5.2
scoreless innings and striking out six against three walks on 93
pitches. In three starts with the Oklahoma City Dodgers this
season, he posted a 1.93 ERA (3 ER/14.0 IP), while holding
batters to a .170 average (8-for-47) and striking out 15 in 14.0
innings.
Urías saw his first big league action last season in four
stints with the Dodgers, going 5-2 with a 3.39 ERA (29
ER/77.0 IP) and struck out 81 batters against 31 walks.
In his Major League debut last season on May 26, 2016,
Urías became the youngest Dodger starting pitcher at 19
years, 228 days, since Dick Calmus, who took the
mound at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 23, 1963 at 19 years,
228 days.
In two career games (one start) against the Giants, he has
gone 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA (3 ER/7.1 IP) and has held
hitters to a .241 average (7-for-29). Urías struck out eight
batters against just one walk in 7.1 innings.
RED (HOT) TURNER: Dodger third baseman Justin Turner
extended his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games in last
night’s contest, after tying a season high with three hits (3-for-5).
Turner has gone 18-for-47 (.383) with five runs, four doubles,
four RBI and four hit by pitches, along with a .463 OBP and a
.468 SLG during the run which started on April 13. Turner
currently leads the National League in doubles (9, 2nd MLB),
while ranking in the NL’s top 10 in batting average (.368, 6th),
on-base percentage (.435, 7th), multi-hit games (9, T-5th) and hit
by pitches (5, T-2nd) in 20 games to start the season.
LOVIN’ SF: Yasiel Puig, who finished last night’s contest going
2-for-3 with a walk, has hit well at AT&T Park throughout his
career. In 28 career games in San Francisco, Puig is slashing .315
(34-for-108)/.388/.454 with 14 runs, four doubles, four triples, a
home run and five RBI. Among active players (min. 100 AB),
Puig ranks eighth in batting average and seventh in on-base
percentage at AT&T Park. He has reached base safely in 19 out of
his last 20 games in the Bay Area, batting .338 (26-for-77) with
10 runs, three doubles, three triples and four RBI along with a .414
on-base percentage during that span.
BIRTHDAY BOY: The Dodgers would like to wish a very happy
birthday to shortstop Corey Seager, who turns 23 today. Seager,
who blasted his fourth home run of the season in last night’s
contest and finished the game going 2-for-5, has posted a .317 (26-
for-82)/.387/.537 slashline with 13 runs, six doubles and 16 RBI
(T-13th, NL) in 22 games this year. The National League’s
unanimous Rookie of the Year award winner had a breakout
season last year finishing 2016 ranked among the NL leaders in
hits (193, 2nd), runs (105, 5th), doubles (40, 7th), multi-hit games
(57, T-2nd), extra-base hits (71, 7th), batting average (.308, 7th) and
slugging percentage (.512, 10th). Seager also earned an All-Star
selection and a Silver Slugger Award, while also finishing third in
the NL MVP voting last season.
According to MLB.com’s Statcast, Seager’s home run
last night traveled an estimated 462 feet, which tied the
Rangers’ Joey Gallo for the longest estimated distance of
a homer this season.
Seager has collected 252 career hits prior to his 23rd
birthday, becoming just the third Los Angeles Dodger to
record 250+ hits prior to turning 23 years old, joining
Adrian Beltre (466) and Willie Davis (288).
He has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, hitting
.379 (11-for-29) with a double, two homers and six RBI
since April 18.
STRONG RELIEF: Following Alex Wood’s very strong outing
last night of allowing just one hit in 6.0 scoreless innings with five
strikeouts, the Dodger bullpen allowed four runs on five hits in
3.1 innings of relief. Despite the rough outing, the Dodger ‘pen
still ranks among the best in the senior circuit in ERA (3.34, 4th),
opponents’ batting average (.218, 3rd), WHIP (1.20, 5th),
opponents’ on-base percentage (.290, 4th), opponents’ slugging
percentage (.317, 3rd), strikeouts (81, 2nd) and fielding
independent pitching (2.49, 1st). The bullpen has also posted a
3.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which is tied for the third best in the
NL, and allowed an average of just 0.39 home runs per nine
innings (3 HR/70.0 IP, 2nd, NL)
Pedro Báez, who allowed his first run of the season with
a home run in the eighth inning in last night’s contest, had
his 19.1 scoreless inning streak snapped. Báez, who has
tossed six scoreless appearances in seven games this
season, has posted a 1.08 ERA (1 ER/8.1 IP) and has
limited batters to a .074 average (2-for-27) in 2017.
THE DEBUT: Top prospect Cody Bellinger made his Major
League debut Tuesday and has gone 1-for-8 in his first two games
with Los Angeles. Bellinger, who entered the 2017 season rated
by MLB.com as the Dodgers’ No. 1 prospect and rated by
Baseball America as the seventh-best overall prospect in baseball,
posted a .343 (23-for-67)/.429/.627 slashline with 15 runs, four
doubles, five homers, 15 RBI and seven stolen bases in 18 games
with OKC this year. Prior to his promotion, Bellinger ranked
among the PCL leaders in runs (T-4th), home runs (T-4th), RBI
(T-8th), total bases (42, T-6th), stolen bases (T-2nd), OBP (11th),
SLG (9th) and OPS (1.055, 7th). The 21-year-old was originally
selected by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2013 First-Year
Player Draft.
