GenderSometimes the gender of the noun reflects

the gender of that noun◦ la profesora female professor◦el profesor male professor

Sometimes, the gender of a noun is arbitrary◦el lápiz ◦ la computadora

In the above examples, it isn’t a “boy pencil” or a “masculine pencil”, but just a pencil. Nor is it a “girl computer” or a “feminine computer”; simply a computer.

That’s it for definite & indefinite articles! Pretty simple, huh? When you use adjectives to describe

nouns, look for the article to choose the form of the adjecive that agrees in gender and number

Don’t know if a word is masculine or feminine?◦Words that end in “o” are typically masculine◦Words that end in “a” are typically feminine”◦I’ll teach you some other tricks next week

Los adjetivosAdjectives are words that describe

nouns (things)In Spanish, adjectives typically appear

AFTER the noun they describe◦el estudiante cómico◦el actor extrovertido

In Spanish, adjectives must agree with the noun it modifies in number and gender.

Los adjetivos: Agreement in Number and Gender

The adjective must agree with the gender of the noun it modifies.◦el estudiante serio◦los estudiantes serios◦la estudiante seria◦las estudiantes serias◦un profesor nervioso◦unos profesores nerviosos◦una profesora nerviosa◦unas profesoras nerviosas

Take a moment to translate the 10 words on the bottom of your worksheet. When you’re finished, add adjectives to describe the nouns.

(You can use the same adjective for each word, I just want to see that you know how to change the form of the adjectives to agree with the noun!)

DD = I have no idea what’s going onD = I am pretty confusedC = I think I’m getting the hang of thisCC = I could teach this to the class!

Imagine you’re attending this speed dating thing. You just found out the other person is a student too! Since you need to know every last detail of your soulmate’s life (but don’t want to come on too strong) you’ve decided to just ask them about one of their classes. If you have extra time, ask them how many classes they have (and what they’re like!)

Verbs!!In Spanish, the infinitive form of the verb

will always end in -AR, -ER, and –IRInfinitives in English are preceded by the

word “to”◦To run◦To study◦To work

Conjugating is what we do when we manipulate the -AR, -ER, and -IR endings of the words to express someone or something doing an action

Conjugation TablesSingular Plural

First Person I we

Second Person you you all

Third Person he, she they

Singular Plural

First Person yo nosotros

Second Person tú vosotros

Third Person él, ella, Usted ellos, ellas, Ustedes

English ConjugationSingular Plural

First Person I speak we speak

Second Person you speak you all speak

Third Person he, she speaks they speak

• As you can see, there is little variation in the form of the verb in English

• The only form that is different is the third person singular, “speaks”

• Let’s have a look at Spanish…
